Recording drop ins with mixed MIDI and Audio tracks using playlists

I'm often recording jazz band sessions where I want to record the piano MIDI as well as the direct piano sound - because I can use a better MIDI piano sample when mixing.

I usually use playlists when the band want to drop in and fix something.

So I use 'duplicate playlist' on a group of tracks - and all is good.

EXCEPT MIDI.

It seems when you duplicate a midi playlist - and record over it - Protools will either destructively overwrite the previous clip - or merge the notes of the second take into the clip (depending on whether you have midi merge turned on).

What I'd like / expect is for Protools to keep my old midi clip intact - and create a new one.

I guess when I duplicate audio playlists - I could then delete the midi clip from the new MIDI playist. Or I could use "New Playlist" for the MIDI track when I use "Duplicate Playlist" for the audio tracks- but it seems seems a bit clumsy (and very easy to mess up the previous MIDI clip).

Am I missing something - does anyone have a good way to do this?

It sounds like you have mirrored midi editing turned on. Look in the Options menu for Mirrored MIDI Editing and turn it off.

You're right - I've turned that off and it now works like I hoped.

Jimmy - you're a lifesaver - thanks so much!
