Re: Stargazer

Hi Roy, thanks a lot for taking the time to listen and for the input - much appreciated.

The piano I used on the tracks is a Korg SP-100 stage piano (with a busted damper input, making for some very interesting mid-take problems!....)

Glad you like 'Go Home' - probably the most original sounding of the three I think. Often in structuring songs, I may think it's a good idea to, say, miss out the second chorus & stick a middle 8 in their instead. As you mentioned though, sometimes this leads to their being too few instances of the hook line.

Thanks again, Ritch

Hi Ritch...

I do think for 'Go Home', the chorus/hook should be in there more, and I say this because it's a great chorus, IMO. Here are my hopefully humble thoughts on the song overall...

The chorus is the exceptionally cool part that the listener is glad to hear return. The intro is great...the verses are very good and support the chorus well, but I would cut the second verse in half, and go back into the chorus there. The slow-down middle part, while very pretty and done well, is an entity in itself and tends to drag down the killer mood you've set up prior to it. This may be cool live once the song is established, but for now I'de either remove it or figure out how to keep it in the same uptempo feel.....basically make it a bridge. I would also double the chorus at the end.

I know that you may be set on it as it is, but from an objective writer/listener's standpoint, this is what I'de advise.

Best of luck with it..... -Roy

Thanks again for your input Roy.

I must say I've not got any plans to re-record this track in the very near future. In the long run, I definately hope to have the oppurtunity to redo all my tracks in a better facility - so who knows what will have happened to the strutures by that point......In brief, I agree with you about a double chorus at the end + a return to the chorus prior to the middle eight. I'm reluctant to change the second verse as it's one of my favourites bits personally (where the BVs come in).

I'm just completing a new song, a funky guitar track, which I'll post when I'm done.

By the way, I've just been on your site to listen to some music. I've just been picking tracks at random though! 'Of madness and magic' is a lovely piece - the guitar (well, mandolins yes?) are sweet.

Also listened to 'Sacred and profane dancer', with the great atmospheric intro. In fact, both these two sound like really good music for film soundtracks....Yet to come across any singing yet, but I'll persevere

cheers, Ritch

CYE,
Thanks for the comments, I also feel that the bass is buried a little as well, excpecialy on the intro. I also need to edit the vocals to match up the endings of phrases, but i will get around to it. I like the suggestion of a lo-fi plug on the ringmaster. As for the synth sounds, i wanna be able to reproduce the sound live so i will probably stay away from them. thanks for listening!!!

Some new Tom Rothman

TOM ROTHMAN - PRE-PRODUCTION

Yep, Tom Rothman is back! Can never get rid of this guy (kidding, it is great to work with him always) That's right, Tom Rothman is back in the thought process for the next CD. Tonight he came by to do some pre-production stuff and laid down some of the new tunes. Then the crazy cracker busted out a song written for me. Titled "Dirty Deed's" it is PERFECT. Should be easy enough to understand for those who know me and all that has happened in my life this past, well, seemingly almost 2 years now, but DAMN it was unexpected for him to bust this out. I think it will be great when it is all tightened up and done right. So we should start tracking in a few weeks. Right now we are ironing out details and thoughts on new stuff to shoot for. Going for 10 songs on this I believe. Should be pretty sweet at the end. We plan on taking this one to Sterling Sound to Master when it is all done.

The rough of the song is first on the playlist right now on my MySpace

Stay Tuned!

Follow my Studio link and it will start playing when you get there. I really enjoy the chorus part. Just way too fitting.
