MIDI in 2021 and BEYOND

Deep Breath...

Ok without completely losing my mind I am going to attempt to help create a positive thread about MIDI and all things MIDI related in Pro Tools in 2021 and beyond. The hope is that with enough input we can help Avid work on making MIDI editing in Pro Tools more bearable. I will admit that I have posted about this before in a not so constructive manner. So moving forward, let us try to compile a list of issues and gripes with the hope of seeing much needed improvements in the future!

Here is what I have so far..

1.) I would like to be able to edit MIDI without Pro Tools crashing. I have had it crash 4 times in the last 30 minutes while trying to edit midi notes. Wack.

2.) Simple editing within clips without all the notes moving out the groove.. Can I please add quantization and then more notes without the entire groove shifting? I may just be totally ignorant on this one...

3.) MIDI PLAYLISTS..... why doesn't this exist?

4.) KEEP IT GOING ADD TO THE LIST:

There are MIDI playlists, though primitive.

- Bring back the cmd+arrow fonction when the track name is highlighted and NOT ONLY if we click in the clip region
- The possibility to select one note (let's say a C3) and (right click) "delete all C3 notes" on that midi track - this even if that midi track has clips from other midi tracks so we would not have to consolidate midi clips in order to delete all C3s

- (also but not only for midi) bring back the cmd+shift+u+b command in the mix window and NOT ONLY in the edit window

Avid, fix the sample rounding bug for Pete’s sake!!!

Avid are aware and acknowledged it but still will not fix it!!

What functions do items one and three perform? As to item two try this: hit the C3 key on the piano keyboard on the left hand side of the MIDI editor and hit the delete key on your computer keyboard. All C3 notes gone. Or if you don't want the notes gone because you're not sure if you want them gone instead of hitting the delete key right click on a C3 and select 'mute notes'.

that's a good trick : thank you very much

EDIT : but you know sometimes the notes can be quite far from the piano roll so this makes you follow the line where the note is in order to find it on the piano roll. Or even making you scroll horizontally to get the notes closer from the piano roll .

This makes me think that this feature i'm wishing is an old cubase 1040 ST feature that i still miss nowdays

So you have to scroll - that's a simple everyday maneuver - no big deal.

I’ve actually been really enjoying midi editing in pt as of late. I recently came back to it from s1. Before then logic. Being honest, I never really gave protools a chance regarding midi till now. There are a lot of hidden features that many just don’t know. I’ve been watching as many you tube tutorials as I can and I’ve picked up so much. I have no idea as to why avid doesn’t really put the word out about what the possibilities are on the midi side. Crap, there is even a FL studio type drum editor work around if you have the patience to set it up and save it as a template.

Dig deep…pt midi is way more robust than many think.

Except its full of bugs and needs a complete overhaul.
