Configuring EZdrummer for multitrack
 

I've looked through what I believe to be all applicable .pdfs that came with Pro Tools 8 (too damn many for my liking), but can't quite find how one can configure Pro Tools for multitrack routing with a drum plug-in (EZdrummer in my case). The EZdrummer pdf says that you can assign mulitracking by selecting what track in the internal mixer you want said instrument to be assigned to, then says "your host has to be set up accordingly to capture these outputs," then says to refer to the application's manual (like I said...too many). I've scanned all the MIDI manuals, as well as the PT reference guide, and couldn't quite find anything. Anyone know offhand how to set this up? I'd like multitrack capabilities in mixing these drums, instead of just volume control for each microphone. Thanks.

I haven't got EZdrummer but I'll take a stab at it anyway. MOST multi output instruments work in the same way.

EZ Drummer goes on insert A of a stereo instrument track.
Make a couple mono aux tracks
In the input selector you see hardware, bus and Plugin inputs.

Here's my method. Start with a stereo instrument track with ezdrummer inserted. Open the ezdrummer plugin and then open the mixer. At the bottom of each "voice" there is a box that says TRACK1. You can click on those boxes and change to TRACK 2 thru TRACK 8. Once you have those set as you want, hide the plugin and create up to 7 stereo aux tracks. Click on the INPUT box for each aux track and select Plugin>ezTrack 2 (or 3,4,5....). Now your ezdrummer sounds will play thru the tracks as you laid out(I leave the kick drum on TRACK 1 and it plays thru the instrument track. My method generally assigns snare top and bottom to Track 2, hat to 3, all toms to 4, overheads to 5 room mics to 6 and this leaves 2 more tracks for the kits that have compressed room or other sounds available. Splitting things out like this lets you use plugins on each track just as if you recorded audio, but it doesn't burn up your audio track count. Once you have this set the way you like, I would go into the ezdrummer plugin and save this setup as a preset(I have NashvilleMulti, PopRockMulti, etc) so half the work is done anytime I start a new session if I don't work from a template.
