Switching over from old Mac

I just migrated my old Mac to my new Imac. I downloaded and installed PT 7.3 and everything seemed to go according to plan. The HUGE problem is...All of my favorite plug ins are coming up as inactive. I was told that auth codes wouldn't be affected if I migrated them to the new computer. Does anyone know what to do here? I'm kind of freaking out!

Thanks

If these were old, pre version 7 plugs, you will need to update/upgrade them.

Well each company has it's own policy that will depend on which version of the plug-in you have and which version they are currently up to. Generally speaking if your plugins are not too old you should be able to download an upgrade from the company website for a nominal fee or call them and do the same thing.

I would start with the website. That should give you any information you need for upgrades.

Re: Switching over from old Mac

I just completed the switch to intel.
I have many third party plugs. It was a ton of work - lots of updates to download.
(I probably spent a week preparing for the move - digging up all of my auth codes, checking intel compatibility, etc.)
.......but it was totally worth it.
There is no comparison between my "old" G5 and my Mac Pro.
The intel rocks! tons of plugs, VI's and still low buffer sizes!

plus - despite assurances, I never trust companies to maintain support for older technology (PPC in this case)
the day will come that some new, "must-have" plug (the "Grammy-izer"?) is ONLY intel compatible

With native processing - intel is the way to go.

I just moved from Hell's Kitchen, I miss it!

Ok, new question. First of all, thank you for your insight. I'm a bit behind the 8 ball with the tech side of this all. I upgraded to 7.3 last night, and that's when nothing worked plug in wise. I was then told this morning by a friend, that he had the same problem, so he went back to 7.1.2 and everything worked fine. Will 7.1.2 work with my new Imac, or does it have to be 7.3?

I really appreciate the help!

Re: Switching over from old Mac

7.1.1 is the oldest version that works with Intel Macs. If your plugs work with 7.1.1, they will also work with 7.3.

What do you mean when you say "nothing worked"? Were the plugs loaded in the session and didn't work or did they disappear?

Before going back to 7.1, try the latest 7.3.1cs update. Also see if your plugs are in the Plug-In (Unused) folder.

Remember the plugs from a PPC Mac won't work with an Intel Mac. You will need new plugs.

Re: Switching over from old Mac

When I fire up my session, it gives me a list of all of the plug-ins that were made inactive. Would authorization codes get screwed up in the migrate process? I was told they wouldn't. I'm pretty sure some of these plug ins will not work with Pro Tools 7, so I know I need to get new versions of those. I am confused about Sonik Synth for example. That is not showing up in my new Pro Tools, and I'm told it doesn't work with 7.3, but does still work with 7.1? Is this correct? There is no update available on the IK site for Sonik Synth.

Thank you again for taking the time to offer insight on this.
