Re: Hackintosh - Salvage your HD PCI cards - You Can Do It Too!
Hi all,
I'm a little bored to wait Apple for a hypothetic new mac pro and considering to build a hackintosh. But i'm working with video, for movies in post-production, are there success stories here ? No problem with 2 HD pcie cards and Blackmagic Intensity pro and a graphic card with 2 DVI outputs ? From what i've learned since a few days, i'm considering at a gigabytes mobo. Of course i want it very speed, but i want it as stable as my MacPro 2008 is which means very very rock solid. Xeon doesn't seem to be required (?) but i would prefer at least 6 cores. And as i am with HD PCIe cards, i will look at compatibility with HDX card also. Dimak415, your setup seems very very great ! Any help for a post-production video specific killer computer would be very appreciate. |
Re: Hackintosh - Salvage your HD PCI cards - You Can Do It Too!
I've been using a Hackintosh for nearly a year now and it's been a 100% positive experience.
Originally, I built the machine to be a VEP slave (principally to run DIVA!) but when it was finished I tried it out as my main machine and never looked back! My 2008 Harpertown Mac Pro went on ebay and the sale covered the cost of the Hack and put £500 in my pocket :D I really didn't expect much from the Hack, but frankly the performance and compatibility left me gobsmacked. I figured if it didn't run Mac OS well, I'd just install Windows and run VEP on that. I needn't have worried:-) I have a PT PCI HD4 rig in a Magma 4 slot chassis and run PT 10.3.2 and ML 10.8.2. I also run Logic, FCP, Adobe CS5 and Office- all good. Unbelievably, since the disk cache facility in PT10, the rig will play 192 voices- PCI load is 75% (this was when I was trying to break it- I failed) Hackintosh spec is: Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3, Intel i5 2500K, 16GB Corsair Vengance RAM, PowerColor HD 6850 Graphics running two 1920x1200 NEC displays. I just built a rig for a friend based around an Asus Z77 mobo (modified BIOS this time), an i7 3770K and built in graphics. It kicks my Hack's butt (by about 4000 points on Geekbench) If you're interested in this stuff, I totally recommend spending some time reading on: http://www.tonymacx86.com. All you need to know is there, remember to leave a tip:-) |

If you want a beast of a hack look at the Asus z9pe-ws board. It's not totally functional under osx. As it used the e5 Xeons that are rumored to be in the new Mac Pro. So speed step and some other power saving features don't work. Onboard audio may be an issue, but nothing that you would need for audio/video editing. A guy in tonymac built one and it was incredible as far as performance goes. You can run dual 8-core Xeons. 16-cores 32-virtual. May be overkill for your needs, and definitely mine, but it will probably be my next hack. Unless gigabyte comes out with a dual e5 board. ;)

Hey Dima,
I'd like more info on your Hackintosh. Can you furnish an email address so that I might forward my system specs to you? Thanks, Pete |

Re: Hackintosh - Salvage your HD PCI cards - You Can Do It Too!
I’m happy to announce that I have a fully functional Hackintosh running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and Pro Tools HD 10.3.2, using my old PCI-X cards. It came with some pain; mostly self inflicted! Here’s what I used:
Jetway NAF93-Q77 Mobo Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge CPU Corsair XMS 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3 1333 Ram Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 Graphics Samsung 256GB 840 Pro Series - System SSD Samsung 256GB 840 Pro Series - Audio SSD Cooler Master HAF XM case Corsair Hydro Series H60 CPU Cooler Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black Corsair HX650 650W Power Supply (3) COOLER MASTER Megaflow 200mm Blue LED Case Fans OS X – Mountain Lion 8GB USB Stick for the build OS X – Snow Leopard for the build 2GB cheap stick of Ram for the build It smokes! Special thanks to Jeremy for the inspiration and tonymacx86.com for the procedures. This is the first time in four years that I’ve been current with my OS and Pro Tools, and my PCI-X cards have new life! |
