Hi All,
This is actually a song I posted here a while ago, but I have re-mixed it (many, many times) and am looking for new impressions. Here is the link: www.cavetyoureruptor.com/mmo.htm Any feedback is welcome - song, performance, mix, etc. Thanks!! |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
David,
That's nice stuff. I especially like Sydney and All Down Hill. I definitely hear Grandaddy, and though he may not be an influence, I also hear Sparklehorse. Really good stuff. Wheels |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
All,
Have not posted a song on here for awhile now but figured this one would hit the spot. THis has been posted here a long time back, but has since been redone and tweeked ALOT. Still waiting for the bass parts, but this song has a lot of meaning to me. This was written by a 20 year old friend/client of mine. Basically he came in and dedicated this to me (not a sappy song either) and the crap I went through this past (almost 2 years) with a bad divorce. IT IS NOW OVER AS OF THIS PAST FRIDAY! Yes I celebrated! So, the vocals are boosted a db more than I would usually do, but it works. We tracked them today, and I just threw it through some quick levels. This will go to my Mastering guy in New York when it is done. Actually think that I am going to pay for it to make it a done song that I can smile at each time I hear it. Cannot wait to get the bass on it to lock it down more. Enjoy! Tom Rothman - Dirty Deed's Doc |

Roy, awesome music (only had time for crow, but had to listen twice). The only criticism is that your Web site loads slow (tee hee). It's not too often I get to hear stuff that innovative and fresh. Keep it up!!!

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Hi,
Here's a couple of short ideas that came up on a late night learning the MBox and PT LE (and of course some nice red wine). I'd appreciate any thoughts on the short samples (unfortunately you have to download them: amplitube2_mp3.zip). It was done as a demo for IK Multimedia's plug-im Amplitube 2 for Swedish music magazine Studio. http://studio.idg.se/tjanster/laddan...0&EditionID=39 Thanks for listening, any feedback and/or input is very much appreciated.... Cheers, iTwang |

Hi CYE...I know it's been a while since you posted, but I just got a chance to listen and reply. I really like this song...and good job on the vocal...my main mix suggestion is that the rhythm section(bass and drums) feels exceptionally thin and 'lite' for this type of song. I would try a mix and concentrate on getting the core rhythm section hot on it's own first, then bring in the rest. All the other elements are there. I think it would do wonders for the overall production. Just my objective opinion, but as I say, good song...good job so far. -Roy |

We are called Groove UK, we write mellow funky tunes. Music you can sit and listen to and enjoy. but at the same time music you can get up and dance to. Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Here are a couple of (hopefully) final mixes from a recent recording I did of my band. I've heard it so many times I need some fresh ears. When we recorded this we wanted it to sound like we do live. We had all of the instruments setup as if we were playing a show, in our basement. (all the amps behind the drums, one guitar to the left, one guitar to the right and bass directly behind the drummer) It was very frustrating for all of us to try to play without any mistakes through out every song. There are definatley some minor mistakes (stick clicks, muffed notes, etc) We just wanted it to be a little raw sounding, we did not overdub or punch anything in. We setup a MS stereo pair in the room to get a very live sound.
I am fairly happy with the way it turned out given the sub par gear we used. Mackie VLZ plus two on the 001 for mic pres, presonus Firestaion for extra ad/da. Beta 52 on the kick, 3 SM57's for the snare, guitar left and bass as well as a DI, AKG c1000 for guitar right, 2 CAD M179 for the toms. For the MS pair we used a CAD e100 for the middle and a studio projects B3 set to omni for the side. Still working out the kinks in this one, but here is song 4 of the upcoming five song EP. Gotta get some things lined up still with tom hits, etc, but I like where it is heading. The middle section will have some more stuff going on too.

Hi Ryan......Given what you were after, which was a live sound, I think you've done a really good job on this. And from a musician standpoint, you guys can play...I also really got into the arrangements. I'de like to hear what a good mastering engineer could do with this. Good job...post more when you can. -Roy |

Shilla-
Hi Shilla.....in the rap/hiphop genre, I think this is well done. Good production, vocals, and beat...only 2 chords throughout the whole song(C to Gm), but it works well for this and somehow doesn't become monotonous. Nice job... -Roy |

Nice job on this so far, Chris...here's what I'm hearing...on the mix, the drums sound very good...main guitars sound good overall(though I don't care for the one little 'bee buzz' guitar).......the 'drone' guitar in the background, I would let that drone half as long as it does, then cut it off abruptly, to let those other guitars breath......the middle part is interesting and pretty cool. That said, there is something I can't put my finger on about the overall mix. I think it's that everything almost sounds too separate from each other, as opposed to gelling well together. I know you're not finished with this...good job so far. Hope some of that will be helpful...post back your progress. -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Roy,
I agree with ya. That drown guitar is there to simply not make it so boring of a tune. The da-de-da-da... da-de-da-de-da part was simple ya know. This made it a little more beefier I felt, but I see what you are saying. I have been seeing that a lot of theor material is always competing for each other due to being too busy. What can ya do right? Thanks though. I just really want to get this one done to be honest. Not necessarily "Producing" if you will, but trying to make it interesting. For 1 it is too long I think. Thanks, Doc |

Thanks so much for the feedback - seems like you have been on a listening kick lately! Anyway, I was hoping to get some more info from you. And if you would prefer to do this by private e-mail, just let me know ([email protected]). When you say that the rhythm section needs to be ‘hotter’ does that mean more compression? Or does it just need to be louder in the mix? This has been an ongoing problem for me. I know that my room is not even close to being properly acoustically setup and as a result I keep having issues with getting the appropriate amount of bass in my mixes. I have gotten an equalizer that I run before my monitors and I tried to set that up with a frequency generator session that I got from the DigiZine – Groundwork article from the Spring 2006 issue. I got a dB meter and tried to make the frequency response as flat as I could, but I guess it’s still not right. Enough rambling, I guess I’m just curious about those first two questions from above. Thanks again for listening!! |

Hi CYE... Listened again....the first thing I notice is the absence of low end here. There's no bottom, or at least not nearly enough...I can barely tell what the bass is doing as is. The first go-to to help correct this is, yes, to bring the bass up, but also try to eq it to feel good with the grungy rhythm guitar and drums. Give the bass some good, big round low end. Solo first the bass and drums to get a good level between them...go ahead and make them 'hot' on your overall level before bringing everything else in(you can always back them off later.) Also, the drums(programmed I'm assuming)...they're kind of random and distracting in places as is....the little beat on the verses('Last time I saw you...") works fine, and I would return to it on each verse throughout. Then, on ALL the choruses, I would straighten it out(as I think you do here and there). The place where the toms get 'cocky' (in verse 3 maybe?) only distracts from the overall feel, imo....so I'de just keep it simple there. Also, the crash cym is kind of cheesy, but can still work ok is you pull it back and compress it more. Watch the guitar levels. The 'grungy' rhythm guitar is too hot in quite a few places(overall maybe). And the 'pan' guitar is too obvious...fine idea, but make it sit well in the production, instead of demanding that you notice it. So...those are my ideas to try overall. Hope it helps. Post back with anything else. -Roy |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Roy,
Thanks so much for the input. Sorry for the delay on my appreciation, but I have been dealing with a dying computer that had to go to the computer hospital for a while. Anyway trying figure out what to get next has not been that easy - with the thousands of posts on the 'best desktops' thread. Anyway, I am actually working on a new version of the drums (I am plainly not a drummer) that will be much more straight-ahead. Hopefully you will be able to give that a listen once I get it finished. And also, I have a different mix up on my webpage right now that has the bass levels cranked up a bit. Thanks again! |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
So, as promised (in the previous post), here is the new, bassed up, re-drummed, version of my latest song.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
All, It has been awhile, but here ya go.....
I ended up having to mix and master my client Knucklepuck's EP as their budget could not afford my guy Nathan James (Jigsaw Sound) up in New York. Well needless to say I think it turned out fantastic! Punchy and LOUD! I ended up using alot of outboard gear to master this one and it seemed to fit the music and WORK! 1073's for EQ, API for some added punch and finally some light compression with my distressors and a slight limiter with teh L2. (slight - right! hammered it, but it worked) I have all their stuff streaming on my player on my MySpace page. A few are at startup, but the others are in the KNUCKLEPUCK folder. Check it out when ya can... BTW: Knucklepuck is a Huge fan of the Mighty Ducks and you will hear what I mean. :-) Doc |
