Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
badP,
Apparently, I don't know squat about getting a good mix, but I'm gonna give you my layman oppinion. I checked out the People Inside on headphones - pls keep that in mind.... the mix seemed a bit out of balance. Vox and hookie slide were a little on the loud side (in parts). Drums are too quiet IMO. The guit is a little loose in parts. But, here's the important part, I LOVED IT anyway. you had me tappn my foot, G. Keep jammin! |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey guys:
I have a couple new mp3s at my site. http://www.jamesthorpe.com/music.php I consider myself an intermediate pt user but not advanced. #1 to me is learning and improving songwriting chops and #2 would be producing/mixing, etc. So, if you have some opinions on the songwriting, i would appreciate that too. Hope you dig it. thanks, --james |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
well here is a ressurected song recorded on my old 8-track. Ran it through PT and cleaned it up, but didnt edit or anything. My voice sucks, so get over it.
My beautiful and talented wife, Shannon, wrote and played the piano part when we recorded it back in '93. I have struggled with getting a good piano sound in the past, and this is no exception, but still not too bad for a 57 shoved up in the back of an upright. This is like an old yearbook picture, so try to not laugh too much:) http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/?aid=3295/singles The song is called Button Eyes. There is another song there called Moving Again that no one seemed to be able to get to work and it apparently is working now. Thanks for the listen. Kev |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Kev...the piano reminds me a little of Joe Jackson (but he usually has his piano tuned...lol)....cool litle song...
|
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
You know, that was when me an Shan first got together so there is no telling how long it had been since the piano had been serviced. It gets a checkup once a year now, more often if needed. Honestly, I am so used to that piano, and I am not a pianist so it never really bugs me much. I just like the song. Hope its not too annoying. I dont have a piano tuning plug yet. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
DaBasstard/Brian,
'Communicate'...very cool...I especially like the percussion... good balance..it's never too heavy or light. Feels good throughout... I enjoyed it. ~Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Some nice stuff in the last week;
MarkORancid; nice tune, although I thought the guitars could be more upfront; what did you use to record them? I thought maybe a little more volume, maybe a little more clarity. Silence, I thought "button eyes" was a very good tune, I actually kind of like that barroom feel on a piano, I thought it served the song well. I liked "turnaround" very much, nice guitar sounds. What did you use for drum sounds? You had some very elaborate drum sequencing, it sounded great. DaBasstard, your stuff is good as always. Do you pretty much always use reason now? bp |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
hi everyone!
if've posted a few times into the DUC but it's the first time i dare to present one of my songs i'd appreciate any comment on it... http://members.chello.at/dawnofdreams/mind_becoming.mp3 |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Roy !Its been awhile.I must catch up here!
Feedbacker was started in reason and finished in protools. Amplitube and sampletank were also used. EADGAE is the tuning of the other tune. Its not really done yet though. http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/3456/3456243.html |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Dawner. I hear some serious overmodulation/clipping/limiting going on. Other then that i like it actually...
|
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
dawner,
Just listened to 'mind becoming'...very cool song. To me, it would be much better if the overdrive guitar(s) were pulled back just a tad when the vocal is present. And though the drums are cool too, they get a little lost in the 'heavy' spots. But I say this with it given that this is a really good song...good vocal too. Thanks for letting me listen... ~Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
badperson,
Another song that makes you feel good...I think you've got a very likeable voice. Now, just a comment on the mix...when the slide and bgv's (background vox) come in, your rhythm guitar just about disappears in the background, and it needs to keep chuggin, at least somewhat. Probably at least pull the slide & bgv's back. I would just keep an ear on that as you remix it (if you decide to)... but good song. Like MikeW said in his post, even with it's flaws, I can't help but like it. thanks, Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
badperson,
By the way, I listened to your song, 'Someday' again a couple of days ago...great job on that song. There's just an honesty about it that's rare. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
dawner, nice tune, I agree with the above comments, but overall you get a very textured sound on the guitars, keep up the good work.
Thanks Roy, and others for comments on my song, I'm glad you like it. Yeah, I'll go back and take a listen. Originally I had envisioned a much more complex arrangement for that tune, that would build over the course of the song, a couple more guitar parts, maybe an organ part, but I just didn't hear it when I got as far as I did. I agree with your comments, I'll probably do a little more work on it this weekend. I'm glad you like "Someday." In a couple weeks I'm getting a great river mp2nv, so I'll probably track that tune again. I posted a note at Harvery Gerst's forum on PSW, asking about phase for that tune. I thought I was obeying the 3 to 1 rule, but when both channels were in mono, it was very boxy sounding, a lot of mids, sounded like a lot of phase problems. when I get the new pre, I'll mic it in a few different ways, I'll post snippets to get feedback on how to deal with phase, maybe it'll help others, too. Later, bp |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
dawner- nice song. someone mentioned above that they thought the distorted guitar was too loud. i think the distorted guitars should be pulled way down in volume during the verse, especially the single notes stuff. this will allow the clean rhythm guitar to shine through and add dynamics as it goes into the chorus. other than that i think the volume of them is good. i think the rest of the levels sound great. good job. oh yeah, someone also mentioned some clipping- it may be the mp3 conversion, it may be that you limited the crap out of the songs or it may be my small speakers, but just remember LOUDER isnt always better!

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
I got another new one finished. Its called Automatic and it is here - AUTOMATIC
Here's the interesting production notes - the wierd machine sounding thing that starts the song and is behind the verses is a guitar ran thru the GRM delay - I told you GRM Tools are my favorite! They should endorse me! I've got a little reversed guitar before the second verse. In the middle guitar solo part, I used the half speed function of Pro Tools on one of the guitars - this is where you get PT to play back at 1/2 speed and play everything one octave lower than you want it. When played back at normal its the right pitch but all trippy sounding - it worked good for the Egyptian sound I wanted. DECONSTRUCT |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Jamlaw, that guitar sound was tight, man. It definatele enhanced the song for me.
Check out this ragga/hip-hop style track I did with my drum machine a couple of years ago. I recorded it straight to cd back then so I tried to home master it a bit w/ protools. It's on the" Manuel" part. Ragga P song Peace |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
That Geetar sounds cool man!!!!!!!
Hey..... I know you guys play out, so my question is...how da heck you gonna do that live? volume knob? Dude your production sounds BADD ASS again!!! |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
mersisblue,
I like the 'refrain'... ..and the groove thing itself is addictive. The vocals could be more up front and present, in my opinion, to bring out the best of what's a really good song. I enjoyed it. thanks, Roy |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
byteme. those tracks sound really good. what did you use for that along with your 002. its the 002 with the control right?

I listened last night, and I really admire your vocals... very interesting how you do percussion too. Thanks for the listen... ~Roy |
Re: Doing it live
Hey Gorilla,
Live we play to ADATs - I fly in all the wierd noises out of my production in stereo so that freaked out guitar is on the ADAT. We don't go too overboard though, like a lot of bands have rhythm guitars and back up vocals and stuff on ADAT - I just fly in wierd noises and effects - occasionally a harmony guitar or the delays of a vocal. Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
jamlaw,
Great sound man! Always impressed by your sound on the recording! Keep it up! Seemed a tad loud in the mix, but that might have been the cheesy headphones I have at work. I have you guys linked on my site here in D.C. Keep it up man! -Doc |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
I agree with the Doc. It's very loud.
But it is obviously well recorded, so back off that limiter and let the instrument breath a bit. Well done |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks for the input guys. And thanks for the link Doc - eventually we'll get one up to you, unfortunately I'm not the guy that knows how to deal with the website stuff! But I didn;t forget about you!
