PT 11 unable to open in Big Sur 11.5

Hi all...

I purchased a 2017 MacBook Air about a year ago, and it has been working well with PT 11 and Big Sur for a good chunk of the time, until now.

When I try to open PT, the thing just stalls... icon bounces sillily.

Ilok Manager is up to date... Ilok 2 inserted with active licenses... I reinstalled PT... no go.

I suspect it might have to do with some automatic updates that my be interfering...

Any thoughts from the wise?

TY!!!

Yes, I did know that this combination was not supported. My hope was that someone on here has had similar difficulties, and there is an obvious fix.

Obvious fix would be updating PT to supported version

I didn’t come on here to be up sold. I’m on PT 11 for a reason.

Anyone else have anything more helpful?

I just noticed that your are running Big Sur 11.5. That just came out a day or two ago (as of this posting). My guess is that Protools 11 (or some plugin you have installed) is not compatible with Big Sur 11.5. It probably worked with Big Sur 11.4 but now that you are running MacOS 11.5, there is a problem. You should try to revert back to Big Sur 11.4 for now. Simply restore from a backup that you made before this update.

Thanks Obsidian.

Interestingly, updating to 11.5 was what I did to try to resolve the conflict. My inability to boot PT 11 happened on Big Sur 11.4, initially.

I am only vaguely familiar with macOS. Does the OS do it’s own back up in some way? Windows Ken restore your system to a previous time. I don’t think macOS can do that, right?

MacOS has a feature called "Time Machine" that takes periodic snapshots of your system and files. Of course you need to have setup the process for it to be active. This is probably a good time to learn that making backups is important with any computer system. While time machine and other similar backup systems are useful, a true backup plan should be part of standard operating procedures with any computer. And no system is backed up until it is backed up twice (or more) and the restore media is kept at a remote location to protect you from physical damage such as from fire, flood, earthquake, hurricane, etc. Search "disaster recovery" to get an idea of an effective back up plan.

Backdate your OSX install - you'll never get PT11 running on Big Sur. Period. The last stable OSX PT11 ran on was Sierra but some import options weren't working right.
