Mbox and windows xp crackling sound

I have a Mbox runing on a 1.7 ghz P4, 512 MB. asus motherboard. windows XP professionel, protools 6.4
When I record a track, the sound "crackles" . The problem is not during playback of old projects (they sound just fine) I bounced the crackling track do disk and listened to it on another pc and the crackling is still there, so I guess the problem is in my computer or in protools (the Mbox works fine on my Ibook g3).
I tried all these things:

1 Reinstall protools.
2 ran through "tuning windows for audio" guide from www.musicxp.net
3 Changed usb cables
4 tried with different mics and cables
5 moved the Mbox around (to avoid any interference from what ever might be in the air)
6 changed playback buffer
7 upgraded to windows SP1 (and not SP2 as digidesign has a warning about this)

and I tried some other strange things withch I don´t remenber anymore(I am really tired off this [bleep] now)
I have a audiophile2496 soundcard installed for midi-purposes only -could that cause the problem ?
Or maybe my usb port is kaput

Could anyone please help

Try a powered USB hub. I know digi recommends against a hub, but people with "krackle" noise problems have reported success using powered hubs.

Also, a search on this forum for "mBox noise" turns up lots of results and potential solutions.

thanx for the tips.
I will get my self one of these powered usb-hubs, hoping that might fix it.
