AAX / AAX DSP insert order

Hello,

Does the rule of having RTAS first then TDM still applies with AAX / AAX DSP plugins ?

Thank you.

I believe it does, though the hit on your voice count is only 1 voice per channel and not 2 voices. When you go TDM-->RTAS-->TDM on a mono signal path, you lose 2 voices going into RTAS and 2 voices coming out of RTAS. With HDX, you only lose 1 voice going into Native and 1 voice coming out of Native.

so also the same with latency I presume ?

on old RTAS/TDM system, it also resulted in significant latency increase.

Twice the buffer I presume as it has to leave the card and come back. So if your computer is powerful enough, you can minimize this by setting the buffer as low as possible.

Can't beat the laws of physics. It is either CPU or DSP who processes the signal, and if you switch between the platforms you will have latency issues sooner or later.

right, but if I have delay compensation on, (maximum) and nothing is going red..... then why is there a problem going DSP plug -> native plug -> DSP plugin?

ProTools HD10 with HDX-2.

audio tracks only.

The problem is, it takes CPU cycles to bring the audio into and out of DSP so if you have lots of traffic between DSP and CPU, eventually there is going to be a CPU spike that stops recording or playback

And, The risk of 91xx errors goes higher.

And it's usually best to use only DSP plug-ins on record enabled tracks.
