ahhh.. another Thomas Dolby fan... how refreshing to know you're not alone. Now if only we can convince everyone that Blinded By Science is NOT his coolest song

Rhette, I cant wait to get home and listen to your tune - Ben speaks pretty highly of you.
I cant wait to get home and listen to lots of stuff here...

Nice job, Steevp! I love the Zombies...

Do you have any originals out there on the net...?

[/QUOTE]

Cheers Stut5 & Posterchild..

I'll fess up, I'm only singing and playing melotron on that recording, the rest of it really is the Zombies!

I do have some originals online Steevp's MP3 page should take you there, don't expect art or fidelity and you'll be fine!..

I love the idea of the chinese whisper song! did person one in the chain do lyrics? or is it an instrumental? were all 4 versions radically different or did they retain mood? It has a very high cheese factor.. I love cheese ..did you retain the chords from previous versions or just walk your own path?

Well, The Flat Earth is, for me, one of my top 10 desert island albums. A hugely influential album, right up there with
David Sylvian's Gone to Earth and Bryan Ferry's Boys and Girls. For me anyway. Alien's Ate My Buick kind of lost me for Dolby though. Any recommendations?

Soundsurfr, um, no, more likely a problem with my monitoring setup, which gets a bit muddy in the 200hz range and then rolls off anything much lower than that. Bass is less heard than implied, in my room. I tried mix/eq variations out on my home stereo (anemic) and in the car(boomy) and settled on the one that seemed the best of each.

Thanks,
Rhett

Okay guys,

Here's another from an album that I've been working on for quite some time. This one is dear to me, so any advice and criticism is definitely welcome...anything to make it the best it can be!

Personally, I love the way the bass was played, but the tone is driving me nuts! I haven't listened to it for about a month, and that's the first thing that jumped out at me today.

So, without further ado: Out of Here

Chris- very nice song. Listening through headphones the guitar makes the mix right heavy. I don't know if you've ever heard of Bebo Norman but I would swear this song is off one of his albums. That's a great compliment in my book.

Well you can hear some of the stuff we've recorded recently w/ Digi002.

The web page is here.

It is under the Music/Samples section.

Thanks all for hearing.

Funny you should notice that...the lead guitar is actually Bebo's!!! Ed Cash and Bebo are pretty much best friends and when we asked Ed to help us out with some guitar work, he insisted on using Bebo's guitar even though it was ugly and had really old strings on it. So, here's the truth about this tune: Some of it was done on a TDM system, Some on Ed's Nuendo setup, and some on a 001, and some on a 002. All four of which were in different locales. This is the only tune from the album that sounds like this. Once I get the okay, I'll put some others up. This group crosses all sorts of genres from latin to rock to sing-songy to jazzy. They're a really great bunch of guys to work with.

SteevP...man, I love your stuff, it's so unique and just fun to listen to. And the way this one is panned... ...so cool. Great vocals too. So how's the weather in England?...I do still want us to get together on something when we get a chance.... thanks, Roy

Pure, I liked "clarity a lot." What kind of mics/pres did you use?

I also liked your bass sound. How did you get that? I'm using a lousy bass and a lousy pre, which, as you can guess makes for a lousy sound.

70's song is cool too, nice drum sound.

murph,

nice job on "take some time."

sarasota song was nice, great folk vibe on the violin, nice vocal sound.

graveleye, nice groove, nice layered sound. Could you explain a little how you acheived it?

thanks all.

plas-lived by the river. Cool song

badperson- cant get your link to work.

Chris that's funny. Reminds me of the other night when my wife came home and said "I thought of a name for a girl but I don't want to tell b/c you might not like it. If you could choose one name that you would never want to name your daughter what would it be?"

Me: "Umm.....Abigail."

Wife: "WHAT?!? THAT'S THE NAME I WAS THINKING OF! I guess that's out."
LOL... bizarre.

cool song bp. The link still didn't work, I had to erase /falling leaves.mp3 part then clicked the link. Maybe that's just me.

Like the harmonies on the Falling Leaves line. Timing is a bit sketchy every now a then, maybe intentional though.

Okay, now that I can post again, here is a link to three songs that I recorded drums using Pro Tools. Unfortunately, most of the other stuff was recorded with that other program. lifeofrileyonline.com Sorry but you'll have to enter your email address but just leave the box unchecked to stay off the mailing list. We won't and don't spam though.

dwkick...
Just listened to 'Dangerous Minds', and you played great on it. The style reminds me a little of the Arc Angels, who I love. Very nice stuff indeed... thanks for the listen, Roy

posterchild,
I had missed hearing some stuff recently, so I went back and heard 'A Dream of Flying'. I still cannot believe that you built that marimba from scratch. Sheesh, that's an amazing feat... and it sounds great, too. The 'chinese whisper' story behind that song sure is a unique way of going about things. Sound like fun... thanks, Roy

Check out my mixes. Its with my band "Sin sister".

Sorry about that Roy, I needed the space to send some tunes to a few musicians to track a few more things on some stuff. But, anyway, I've got the tune Out of Here back up and a little Jazzy thing I'm finished with up also just for you!!! You can find them here:

Hey Chris,

In "Ouf of here" i hear something funky going on at 39 and 50 seconds into the mp3. It sounds like a weird edit or something. Ofcourse my player could be the culprit...;-)

Nice song by the way. I enjoyed it....

But that jazz stuff you record is amazing.... (and i have a weakness for upright bass... )

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi Chris,

great job. That tune is called "Can't We be Friends." A great old standard. You've inspired me to do some jazz, I'll figure out a tune over the weekend and post it.

Nice playing. Is that professor you recorded last time?

bp

Chris Cavell 08-26-2003 06:57 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks BP, you really know your standards! Yeah, that's the pianist from Eastman, the Bassist from LSU (that got his masters and doctorate from Eastman), and The Bassists son on drums.

Thanks for letting me know about the glitches Bastiaan in OUt of Here. I'm still working on it so it's highly possible there really is a bad edit or two. I'll check it out.

Man, that was just so nice.('Out of Here', that is)...you did a great job recording these guys too. I scrolled back to see if I could find it, but who's the singer? I love this stuff, and I appreciate you reposting it.
On my next break, I'll listen to 'Can't we be friends'...
thanks, Roy

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Out of Here is a song by a friend of mine named Mark Dunbar. He recorded it for an album of a particular christian band that he's in called Pierced. The song really however has very few of the actual band members on it, and is the only song I've ever heard Mark sing the Lead on. Calvin Turner (the 19 year old phenom from New Orleans recently relocated to Nashville) replaced the original drums and bass without ever listening to the tune. (Seriously, he just sat down and said start rolling! He could feel everything perfectly and nailed it!) Shawn Carter of Lafayette, LA on piano. Mark sings lead and plays the continuous rhythm acoustic part. Ed Cash of Nashville came up with and played a second rhythm part on the verses and the lead (played on Bebo Norman's guitar). We kept a few words of a very nice girl's attempt at background vocals.

This tune was tracked on many different systems: 001 on PC, TDM 24 mix plus on a mac, and Nuendo on PC, and I'm doing all the mixing with my 002. I tracked them in Nashville, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette.

They are really a musically talented band despite the fact they've adopted the genre Christian. It goes from rocking, to jazzy, to latin, to....yes....boring, but not every song can be great all the time. Anyway, I'm glad everyone seems to really like the recording and the mix. I look forward to getting some of their other tunes up soon. (Maybe some final masters and not just "good enough" mixes.)

Chris,
Well, 'Can't we be friends?' just blew me away...just so fine. Sheesh, these guys are great, and you did a great job of capturing the piece. I'm putting this one aside to play just whenever...
thanks, Roy
