Laptop Pro Tools users at 100% CPU load - UNITE!

Is your laptop running at constant 100% CPU utilization whenever Pro Tools is loaded? (according to Windows Task Manager).

Several posts spread out on this forum clearly indicates that laptop users are experiencing a constant 100% CPU utilization whenever Pro Tools is loaded on their computer. The result is massive fan noise and an unnecessary hot laptop which will eventually shorten its lifetime and all the components within.

These posts also indicates that the problem lies in the interplay between Pro Tools (LE) and the Mobile Pentium4 - M processor.

These posts also indicates that the problem has been "known" for more than a year now.

Having this problem myself, i would really like you guys to join in and state your problem regarding this specific issue. We have to make this problem visible to have Digidesign try to fix it, or at least comment on it.

CONSTANT 100% CPU UTILIZATION ON THE FOLLOWING CONFIG:
Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, Mobile Intel Pentium4 - M 2.2GHz CPU.
WinXP SP2
Pro Tools LE 6.7 (also on 6.1.1 + 6.4)
Mbox

DITTO!!!

I have a digi recommended laptop...Gateway 450 with a 1.6 P4-M processor and have the same problem. PTLE makes the fan run constantly... I have used 6.1 through 6.4.9 on a 002 and a 002r with no differeces.

However, my Allenstein runs as it should...

Isn't it funny that digi recommends things that run crappy, but won't endorse the Allenstein configuration that works so well..?

I have a Dell inspiron 8200 with a P4M 2.4 Ghz processor (works pretty damn good w/ PT by the way)and I also thing that it is very odd that the task manager processor utilization is always at 100%. The fan kicks in right away and is very annoying and distracting.

Digi - Can you at least shed some light on why this occurs?

HP ZD7000 fan sounds like a hairdryer on high....and... the only program that causes this is PT. When I load up the plugs... it sounds like liftoff at NASA.

got a dell inspirion 8600 Pent. M 755 (2.0 ghz) xp sp2 have ran p.t 6.4 and 6.7 on this machine w a 002. runs like a champ, blows away my desktop, a 3.2 P4, but the fan keeps going and going and going and going and going............................. is not to bad until i really get a load goin on it.

whats weird also is that if you have task manager open before you launch p.t. it goes to 100% the second it starts to launch, no session open, just idling using 100%.

i know they cant test the software on everything, but how come it runs so good on this processor and i think it is recomended by them as well, but still have this issue. wonder if we could get better results if this issue was dealt with?? to stop the wear and tear on our computers would be worth it all though.

Re: Laptop Pro Tools users at 100% CPU load - UNITE!

I just responded to another thread...I wish there was a solution for this! My fan runs constantly: Dell 8600, XP SP1, 6.4, both 002R and Mbox.

As I mentioned in the other thread, you don't even need to have ProTools (software) open to get 100% CPU usage. If I play MP3s (Windows Media Player or iTunes) through my 002R I get 100% CPU usage.

I'm either going to have to build a desktop or switch software because the fan noise is so bad.

Hey Guys,
I understand where you are coming from here. If I were CEO at Digidesign I'd be firing a handful of people who aren't willing to change and support this Windows platform fully. Some people still have their heads stuck in an Apple. I can't believe that Avid knows this is going on as they are a very respectable company and don't treat their Windows customers the same way. I'd be posting this in the new Config. problem area above and sending emails to both Digi and Avid.
I've been through this with many companys and it really comes down to firing people to make changes. Hope they get it done this year as well as getting that rediculous SP2 issue out of the way. I don't know of any other software that is still dealing with this.
And yes, the Allenstein machine has been problem free with no mention of any support yet from Digi. Still the best performing system for PTLE in my opinion and I use many Macs here too.
