PT HDX Cheese Grater roll call

Hi,

My 2009 -flashed to 2010- 12 core cheese grater MacPro running PT HDX on Mojave is still working just fine.

Who else is still using one of these for their main production rig?

Are you considering upgrading soon and if so, what are you thinking of replacing this with?

I mostly do live in studio recording, editing and mixing. I do very little with midi and virtual instruments.

I bet a bunch of you are in a similar situation and wondering what the next step is.

Hey Will,
I'm on a 3.46 dual cheese maker.

i'm sitting here on Catalina with the dosdude patch and it is working well for now. Thinking i'll probably try out a mac mini / hdx chassis when avid qualifies Big Sur. Once that is running well i'll put the old cheese into a supporting actor role for storage etc. i really want a new mac pro but i think the best thing is to wait 6 months to a year or so after the apple silicon one has shipped and proven itself both in hardware and O/S

Mojave 12 core metal 580 running well.
Showing system is power maxed however.

Also running a 12 core new mac pro macOS 10.15.6
Both on par when working in Pro Tools HDX 20.11

Mostly I feel difference in maintenances and port expansion cable lengths.

Still running an old 4.1 upgraded to Intel Mac Pro 12 core 3.33 GHz, 48GB RAM, OSX 10.13.6, PT HDX, PT 2020.9.1

I decided to keep it for now, until Apple puts better Silicon Macs out there.. then I'll think about moving forward. But its running great!

Running HDX on a flashed 4,1 to 5,1 6 core 3.46 . Mojave for now but will prolly do the Catalina patch. Plotting on an M1 Mini in the future. Already copped a sonnet tb3 egpu for the card. got it for peanuts on eBay compared to the official avid enclosure. I refuse to give em $500 for that lol.

Im gonna wait for the hdx hybrid add on to drop before I decide to move over. If it nets me enough power ill sit tight for awhile.

Mac Pro 5.1 2012 6 core 32 gig ram Mojave nvme pcie protools 2020.11. Just Finally got HDX yesterday. I have been looking at it for years and my mind is blown. I knew there would be a jump in audio quality but this is more than I imagined . I have been running HDN for a few years coming form accel/tdm an neither one of those sounds like HDX.
Anyway my Mac 5.1 is working wonderful. I will be using this till I absolutely have to upgrade. Also work between ablelton and cubase.
I am retraining my ears. Can't believe how much reverb I've been using. Ouch
Now that I can actually hear it.

HDN and HDX should really sound exactly the same :)

No they don't sound the same that's why I was so shocked. My drivers were up to date the HDN pcie card worked fine. I swear on a stack of avid manuals major sound bump.

I am no expert but that does not sound right, Because according to the experts raw HDN and HDX files will null and or cannot be distinguished in a Blind AB test.

To clarify Are you able to playback ( in real time) the same exact file simultaneously in both systems ( raw with no plugins ) and able to switch back and forth every few seconds ??? If not the amount of swearing or number of manuals is still of dubious objective validity jusss sayin'
Don't get me wrong I would love that to be true, because that would make my new Carbon extra extra special
