Listening Session - Home Studio Version #2
Ok all, this is the second edition of my listening session. Sorry for taking so long, been busy.
This session is of 6 different mics, with two different mic pre's (Presonus Digimax lt & Vintech 1272). The source is an acoustic guitar. Note that the guitar itself is nothing special and the performance isn't either. I had an unsuspecting volunteer, so we'll take what we could get. I used the digimax only because I was too lazy to pull my 002R out. Sorry, but I figured most peole on the board have or have heard the presonus. Besides, this is as much a mic comparison as it is a pre comparison. Here's the scoop: I placed all mics about 22 inches from the sound hole. I recorded with each mic once into the different pre's. No Eq or compression. I did add a little Dverb. I would not even bother to use some of these scenarios to record an acoustic guitar, they were merely done for comparison purposes and to give you a point of reference that might be familiar. Hopefully this will give you an idea of the difference between each scenario. Obviously, varying the placement will yield different, possibly more favorable results in some instances. That said, here ya go: sm 57 into presonus sm 57 into vintech nady scm1000 into presonus nady scm1000 into vintech sennheiser 609 into presonus senn 609 into vintech shure ksm 32 into presonus ksm 32 into vintech apex 435 into presonus 435 into vintech RODE ntk into presonus ntk into vintech Post your thoughts. here's the link to the first edition listening session #1 |
Re: Listening Session - Home Studio Version #2
THanks for posting this doyle.
The Vintech has so much nice colored bottom end and some shimmer on the highs. The Digimax is a great clean preamp with no hype. That nady into the 1272 sounds pretty good..as does the NTK into the vintech. You can hear the tube on the ntk-> presonus. I dont care what doc says... a few channels of NEVE and a digimax is a great combo for any situation. |
Re: Listening Session - Home Studio Version #2
BOY!... that NTK into the vintech sure sounds sweet! I think I'm gonna have to fork out the money for a vintech...
Also, Is that an original sm57 (i.e. sm57A and not the sm57B)? If so do you also have any sample of the B series with these pre-amps? - GAPE |

Re: Listening Session - Home Studio Version #2
Hmmm NTK into the vintech sounds ok.
New strings on the guitar needed I'd say. Next pref was senneiser into the vintech neeel. |
Re: Listening Session - Home Studio Version #2
ok, finally got through listening. I still love the sound of the KSM32 over all on both pre's which pushes a vote that it is an excellent mic. 2nd I would go with the Apex435 through the Presonus. Through the vintech, it was just a little bit too crisp for some reason for my tastes and needs a touch of warmth IMO I actually am getting a pair of those 435's in house pretty quick though and the 32 has been on my wishlist for some time now... Thanks for posting Doyle!

Re: Listening Session - Home Studio Version #2
no problem J. I was hoping people would find this useful. I talked to Maxine yesterday....think I'm going to order a 273 in a couple weeks!!
Yeah, the nady isn't a bad mic. I bought it because someone said it had some U87 like qualities. Works well here and there. |
Re: Listening Session - Home Studio Version #2
interesting....I hated the the 609 mic either way. Thanks

Re: Listening Session - Home Studio Version #2
Thanks Charlie. My favorite combo was the 435 into the presonus. I liked the cleaness it had.
