Can't access virtual instruments via MIDI

Hi all. Noob here. Just bought a new Macbook Pro, Clarett 4Pre and installed ProTools a few days ago. I can record audio, insert plugins and use them (all seems good there w/buffer size of 128, tried several different sizes checking for latency), playback is good, I can create an instrument track and insert a virtual instrument but the only way that I can play that instrument in PT (either Addictive Keys Studio Grand or Air DB-33) is to put my pointer over a key and click it.

Using my Yamaha P-150 MIDI'd into the Clarret Pre4 and Thunderbolted to my Mac I can play the Studio Grand as a Stand alone with a buffer of 128 samples with no issues whatsoever but not in PT.

I can open MIDI Studio in PT and test the signal, the right triangle beneath the icon will light and I'll hear the audio "blip" but ONLY when I release the key, I've discovered.

I contacted PT installation help yesterday regarding this and no one has responded yet. I called today but no phone help on this issue so I just thought I'd ask you good folks to see if anyone could figure this out 'cause I'm stumped and have lost enough hair. Thanks!

In Setup>Midi>Midi Studio, have you created an "instrument"(the Yamaha) and set the incoming midi path? I run PC here and there may be subtle differences, but for PC, this part of setup is crucial for midi controllers. I attached a screen shot of my setup so you get an idea of what it might look like:o

Hey Claws, have you looked to make sure that your P-150 is available to Pro Tools in Setup / Midi / Input Devices ???

cheers john

Hi, albee1952. If that's your birth year then I'm only slightly younger than you. Support called me and PT directions didn't bother to say that 'MIDI thru' must be checked under 'options'. I saw that but didn't think for a second that would be the fix. Thank you for your reply and your attempt at helping me. Every issue that I've had, save one, was caused by inadequate instructions both in PT and Focusrite. Some of us DO know how to follow directions. :D

Hi, John. The Yamaha wouldn't make a difference since I'm using the Clarett interface but it's working now. Just had to check "MIDI thru" under "options" which isn't in the "detailed" instructions. All seems to be goodish. :-) Thank you for your response!

oh yeah, that bit me once too .. weird as that is Defaulted to being Selected and there is No Key Command for it ..

as far as the Yamaha - i used to have a P-80 and i created a device for it and named it P-80 - so it would show in midi studio for pro tools .. but i do not have that keyboard anymore .. i miss the weighted keys ...need a new one !!!

good to hear you are sorted ..

Yeah, had this P-150 for over 20 years and the action is still very good after being drug/dragged all over the U.S. Gots to have the weighted keys for piano doncha know. ;-) I've a Yammy EX5 that the action is SUPER fast on for everything else, a Roland VR-09 that took the place of my VK-7 when the red glue started dripping out of it and picked up a Moog Sub37Tribute a month or so back. Moog seems to be having quality control issues as this is my third and I found another person on the Sub37TE page on Facebook that's on their 3rd. Others on their 2nd. Good to meet you! :-)
