Upgrade Info

Okay, I give, I run PT 7.4 on a PC with an Mbox2 2, I want to upgrade to an apple and a 002 or 003 and a control surface. I need which ever product gives me the low latency (I can't live any more with latency) monitoring. What do I need without totally breaking the bank. Help , help thanks.

Hi Michael,

The MBox 2 you have cna do zero latency monitoring, it splits the signal coming into your input and sends a copy straight to the monitor outs. Of course you can't add a reverb or whatever to that.

One the 002/003 this doesn't exist, however they have an option inside Pro Tools called "low latency monitoring" where any armed audio track gets routed straight from the AD converted input channel to the output channels, so instead of getting whatever latency is normally there ( depends on your buffer setting) you get almost no latency at all. When this is turned on, if you have any plugins on the tracks set to record, they're diisabled.

So same diff really, just a differrnt way of achieving the same final result.

If I (using a 003) want to say add a little reverb to my monitor mix (eg for some vox) I set up a verb as a send and feed my vocal channel into that, that way turning on low latency monitoring doesn't kill the verb. Yeah there's some latency in there but it's just a little pre-delay effectively, so it's fine.

Cheers,

Simon

I never get a latency complaint at buffer 64.

Re: Upgrade Info

latency.....add reverb to low latency output but more important,
get a used 002R send to Black Lion for their signature series and get a Behringer BCR2000 control surface $100 ebay, I also got the novation nocturn for the plugin control.

hope that helps:D

Re: Upgrade Info

Yeah with an 002/3 device the latency is more dependent on your computer than the interface itself, unless in "low latency" mode. Which cancels and plugs you have on the track. So really if you wanna track with plugs at low latency settings you'll need a bigger computer. In other words a Mac Pro should do well. Now it's up to you to decide which Mac Pro to get. ;)
