Anyone else used the Behringer 8024 RTA ?
 

I've just installed a Behringer DSP8024 and hooked up their ECM8000 microphone.
What I'm trying to do is use the Auto-Q function to fire pink-noise into my room with the DSP8024 strapped across the main inserts of my mixer.

The function appears to work ok but I'm surprised at the extremes on the EQ curve that results. Mostly +16 db across pretty much all frequencies above 100Hz - which suggests to me that there are some extremes at other frequencies in the 31 bands that mean most of the pretty flat responding frequencies have to be boosted 16dB to compensate. (my guess)

Are there some rules of thumb for such analysis ? I don't expect to become a professional overnight but could sure use some advice and pointers to first principals on this process.

I haven't used the unit myself, but I recently exchanged a couple of posts with someone who does.

It sounds VERY odd that you would need that much EQ on so many bands. If you just use the RTA function without telling it to auto-EQ the room, what does the response look like with pink noise and a "C" weighting? Maybe you're trying it as an "unweighted" response? Did you try different output levels such as 70db, 80db, 85db and average the results? Did you move the mic to different spots in the room at all - or at least in the general area of the sweet spot?

I just went through a whole EQ analysis of my control room (and am still collecting info). Other than a few anomalies in the lower end of the spectrum (<300hz), my room is actually pretty good now (+/- 4db from 500-14Khz). I added some Auralex 4", 2", and some Lenrd bass traps. The Lenrds seem to have helped a LOT although I haven't re-analyzed the room since adding them. I'm hoping they helped out with a 10db dead spot at around 100hz and a 5db peak at 130hz - which are due to room modes.

The guy who had been using the Behringer said that you don't want to use it to make the room COMPLETELY flat, but to make it more of an "Un-happy" face, with the lower and upper ends dropping off a bit. Otherwise, you're mixes won't translate well.

I'm considering one of those units myself if the Lenrds didn't handle the low end problem.

However, I would be VERY leery of using so much EQ without treating the room first. I would also try to "round-off" (improve a little) any EQ problems remaining after working on the room rather than trying to get a straight line on the RTA. If you have to add more than 5-8db in a band, then you either have a monitor or a room problem. I would think you should be able to reasonably flat response only using a few bands of the EQ.

Does it sound good with all that EQ? I can't imagine that it does.
