Master: Separating Tracks
 

Hey guys, I love everybody.

While mastering a CD, I'm trying to figure out how to separate track by track so that when someone plays the CD it separates each song. Track 1, track 2, etc...how abouts do I do this?

each song should be a different file which will automatically show up as a different track.

What software are you using?

well, actually, I meant what software are you using to burn the cd.

I just run whatever I convert into an MP3 via Adobe Audition through Itunes and burn it. So, like right now I got about 7 songs, each one on a different PTMP track. Do I bounce the entire file into a Stereo Interleaved, 16/24 bit, 44100 wav file, then convert it into an MP3, drop it into Itunes, burn it, and then it will automatically separate track by track on the CD?

why on earth would you convert to mp3 before burning the cd?
audio cds should be 16 bit 44.1kHz wav files. No other way.

yeah, I'm going to have to agree. You're killing the quality by converting the file down to mp3, then back up to cd audio.

I'm not really clear on the setup that you have going. You have 7 files that you want to burn, but they are all in the same session? If you bounce/RTD you'll combine them all into one stereo file. You won't have to worry about different tracks, it will just be one track on a cd.

If you have 7 files, just add them to the burn list of whatever program you're using and it will burn them as 7 different tracks.

Itunes does a great job burning CDs...

So I guess I didn't realize that MP3s were worse than WAV files? But regarding my first question: If I'm mastering a concept record, how do I get the tracks to steadily flow from one to the other using a burning program? In other words, how do I get the Pro Tools file to play exactly how it is? Do I bounce it to a WAV file and then wah lah or what?

You’re mastering and can’t hear the difference in mp3 and wav? The last thing I want to do is come across as discouraging or disrespectful, but that sends a flag up for me. Mastering is an art, involving extremely fine tuning and very specific changes. Mastering engineers can hear some of the smallest changes and have some of the best trained ears in the music business (at least the ones I know do).

Regarding your question.
I assume based on your question that you’re wanting the tracks to play into each other with no break in the audio (like a techno type thing where the music never stops, but the tracks are separate). Bouncing will make one long continuous file with no separation. You would then need to import the file back into pro tools (or just use RTD which would cut out a lot of steps), separate the continuous file at the points you want the track advance, then export each separated file. Separating and exporting are both covered in detail in the reference guide.

Most burning programs are going to add a two second lead in between tracks. For burning the continuous tracks with no breaks, I think you would CD Architect or Nero (PC).

Go buy Samplitude or something. PT is not geared well towards mastering.
