Steve,
'Driving West'...what a great song..... I love the chords, the vocals, and especially the style. Your material is always fun, always unique. The changes are very refreshing too. Who were your influences, or at least who's stuff did you tend to admire?

Wow, thanks Roy, my influences are all in the Rock/Pop fields, I spent many years in bands with close links to Hawkwind, so I have space rock deep in my veins, however set me free with a blank canvas and I will gravitate towards my other love.. pure pop, Sparks were an early influence, I still think their first 5 albums are hard to top, Bowie is up there, Zeppelin, Yes, The Shangri-Las are gods to me.. Spector, more modern bands, Eels, Jellyfish, any & all 60's psyche, The Millenium, Ballroom, Zombies etc etc.. as a friend says "All hail the 3 minute pop song"

So have you added to your Korg box? I always think of you as being the midi man, I use a Roland XP80 with 4 expansion cards, giving me around 1450 sounds, though having said that only around 30 are -really- any good other than that it's just guitars and a J-Station or Zoom GFX8..

And thanks to everyone else who took time to listen, I took note of the vocal pitch comment and will try harder next time! (I did a cover of "Come Sail Away" by Styx for a friend the day before and it ripped the heck out of my throat, stupid pomp rock rubbish..)

Right, I have 3 more songs on the drawing board and no real world work in the diary.. let the ProTools mania continue!

Hi mindstAt,
really liked your tune (babygone), well done!!
Did you use Reason patches for those strings??

Cheers,
Ruben

MindstAt,
I enjoyed 'babygone' too...some interesting midi stuff going on there... ...thanks for the comments on 'Gypsy' too.

Re: a sonic foundry acid production

thank you for your time gentlemen.
Ruben - no, i dont have reason. that was all composed first, then i recorded from a digital piano into acid. there was no midi involved. the strings sound cheezy so i tried to spice them up a bit.

Re: a sonic foundry acid production

Hi mindstAt,

Very nice job, I especially liked the part when the Clavinet(?) creeps in under the wire, there's something about sampled strings I like, they sound real, yet the attacks & cutoffs have an unreal quality, I guess thats why every track I complete has a melotron sample buried somewhere in it

Anyway, thanks for the cool track.

I just thought I'd post some of the stuff that I recorded a while back.

Julie Larocque - Mirror

Julie Larocque - The Fourth Day

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Julie - listening to your first mirror song now. very mellow. the acoustic guitar, the vox, the keys, bass, the progression of the song - all very good! it sounds perfect. i enjoyed this song. i really like the singers voice. that is you i assume?

4th day: another mellow tune it sounds like. nice intro on this one with the arpeggiating keys. aha and the acoustic guitar joins in too. solid.

you are a good songwriter for this kind of music. good material here.

I’m not the artist or song writer, and far from the singer. The artist is Julie Larocque a close friend. I am the Engineer (Emerson Scott) and it was recorded at Raven Street Studios in Ottawa

Thanks for the great feedback

Roy:

Like the Gypsy very much too. Great guitar sound: I can almost see you strangling the life out the neck of the guitar, and the backing sounds damn fine even though you were using less powerful tools than you have at your disposal now. Nice stuff. As always.

Stevep:

Nice track. I like it a lot. Man, I used to love Sparks. The phrase 'Angst in my pants' still makes me laugh.

I've been lacking inspiration for weeks, but this finally came out:

Kind of not quite there yet, and I'm not totally in control of Reason yet, but see what you think.

Jon,

I like your string arrangement on this song. When your first spoken line came up, it kind of shocked me a bit. I was not expecting this; however, I thought it was a very nice touch.

JonM,
How've you been? I like your new song very much...here's what I hear mix-wise...the cello seems a little overbearing at the beginning, but the overall strings volume comes together better at the 2nd verse.(Sounds like the cello was pulled back there?)... I'de also pull up that cool acoustic guitar(nice) to complement the vocal... Good song, as usual...
And thanks for the comments on 'Gypsy'...

Thanks all for listening.

Roy

Thanks for that. I've been good: briefly fell in love with an 002 on Ebay, but managed to resist the temptation and I'm still using my AMIII. You have some good monitors and some good ears to hear them with: yes the cello is boosted at the beginning, as you say probably too much. The track still needs some work, but hey, don't they all.

John

You're not the only one who gets shocked by my voice: scares the crap out of me

MindstAt

Thanks for that. I'm in a place called Saga: bet you can't even find it on the map. Just checking out 'Babygone' and this is a cool track. Concur with all the other comments: the strings really work. Nice stuff. Thanks.

Steve

Thanks for the link - I'm honoured. Actually got an email from someone the other day who said they'd arrived at my mp3unsigned page via the links page on your site. Kind of felt good, so thanks. I took the liberty of linking you on my own very new and extremely naff web site.

Cheers all!

This is an album that I mixed three of the songs on. "Addiction", "Don't Be Afraid" and "If You Want it".

My favorite one is "If you want it". She has an amazing voice. Let me know what you think of the mixes. Any and all comments welcome. Thanks in advance.

No, seriously, it's my main gripe, I've had over 12,000 downloads of songs from my site, and maybe received 20 emails, I honestly wouldn't mind if everyone who downloaded sent hate mail, but the -silence- is really annoying.

I have a theory that if I were charging for songs, promoting myself via boastful biographies and selling hard copy on CD then the MP3's would have a perceived value, people would be more inclined to them/me seriously, but as it's free not even requiring a log-in then it's so much cyber litter.

But it won't stop me.. oh no.. I'm creating more cyber trash as we speak

I have been offering Free studio time. Seems like people like that(Go figure!), so I have been getting practice.

Recorded a fellow yesterday. Americana/Folk Singer Songwriter. Cool songs. Crocodile is a very fun song.

Dan Walker at 5198 studios

Guitar was (2) Apex 435, Rode NTK and a little direct in.
Vocals - Rode NTK
Harmonica - SM57, Rode NTK

All into Digimax LT --> 002R.

Enjoy!

Thanks for Autumn Leaves, very nice! That girl has a gorgeous voice.

bigbubbaj,

Sounds like you've got a great start to your studio work! Very well done. What kind of acoustic was the guy using? Has a real mellow sound.

can u tell me plz how u positioned ur mics?

Aussie169 08-30-2004 05:44 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

bigbubbaj

Yeah, the guitar sound is great.
Vocals are a little thin and harsh. I know the NTK (like all Rode mics) has a hyped top end, but I've heard it sound much warmer than this. Have you eq'd the bottom end out of it or is this how the vocalist sounds?
Good effort on the mix.

bigbubbaj 08-30-2004 05:47 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks guys!

It was a mahogony martin - he said it was their low end one D-15 Mahog

Acoustic guitar was 2 apex 435's both about 3 inches above soundhole, about 10-18 inches away. Right mic was about thr 12th fret aiming at the soundhole. LEft mic was in between the bridge and the bottom of the guitar aiming at the soundhold. Gain was pretty hot, since he is a quiet player. Got this from IntelDoc.

AND - Rode NTK about 4 feet awat - 5 feet high aiming at the soundhole.
AND - guitar (on 2 songs) was plugged in DI through his SWK strawberry blonde amp.

All into the DigimaxLT @24/48 -->002R.

A tiny bit of EQ on the guitars, and they were mixed as follows: Apex 0.db (Unity), Rode about halfway up (12db fader gain) and DI almost inaudible.

Thanks for listening!

bigbubbaj 08-30-2004 05:49 AM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Aussie,

I will take a look at the EQ on the Vocals later tonight. Off to Work!

I hear what you are saying, and it might be eq. It could also be the Digimax Lt preamps.

I need to pick up a trident or vintech for vox I think.

Wow 12000 downloads. That is incredible. Think I've had about 40 .

Seriously, are you sure your mail thing is working properly? I emailed you via your site about 2 weeks ago - after the person contacted me - to say thanks for the link....did it get through? Maybe somewhere you've got 12000 fan mails waiting to be read.

Looking forward to the next track. I'm having weird stage fright issues at the moment. Hanging out and noodling on the guitar my fingers, by my standards, are lightning fast, but as soon as I put up a mic I go to pieces. Weird, eh?
