Jon 'Fingerwolf', I really like the sound of the bass in the composition on your page. I like that in combination with the acoustic, live drums (being not midi). The progression of the chords makes sense to me, but I think you can do something about the melody from the piano. Could be a bit more developed, right now it seems like it lacks direction. Sounds are really nice, also the synth, but the song as a whole needs some more work. For a first PTLE product however it's really not bad, when talking in terms of good/bad/etc. Interesting to see what it's gonna be after some time.

Walther, thanks for the feedback - you're right about the melody, I thought I'd live with it for a while and I already know which bits I think sit well and which bits basically sound like aimless noodling, so I'll be revisiting that shortly.

Interestingly enough, the drums *aren't* live - I specifically put them together and programmed them so they would sound as like a real drummer as possible, and in your case, it appears to have worked. Groove templates and such are nice in the right context, but this stuff has absolutely no quantise on it whatsoever, it's all played in from a keyboard by my fair hand and I've manually moved quite a few notes to give it the required swing.

Hey Roy, everybody, sorry about the link, I've been trying to get a direct link to a particular song, but somehow it doesn't let me. Any ways try the link below, you'll see two folders, In one I have the stuff I recorded with the guys in my latin band, and in the other folder, my attemp to Latin Jazz.

They are not mastered and need a lot of work on the mixing, the majority of the instruments were recorded in my home's family room with really poor acoustics, but I'm doing the best I can.

OK, I'll throw this to the wolves.
Just a rough mix. Arrangement not set yet. A few SNAFU's in the bass line.
Looking for comments before I go any further.
Thanks

This is the second time I am mistaking in telling live vs midi. It was the timing and ms. before or after the beat that made me feel the drums were played live. Not quantised, indeed. Maybe I also should also play drums via keyboard and leave it unquantised. It sure works. Good to know also that one can get by with a drummodule when no real drummer is available. My music always sounds so midi.

Roy,
Wow, that piece just oozes with feel. What are you using for drums? The compression on them gives them a nice pop. The big guitar intro is cool too. That's the best material I've heard from you yet, IMO. Are you using ambience reverb on the drums? What's your guitar chain? Hopefully you haven't already posted the details. I haven't been reading...getting hitched in one week.

As far as which mix I liked the most. B sounds more aggressive, they are both great....I think I like A a bit more.

Chris,
I am curious as to how you approached the master. Do you do stem submixes or master a complete mixdown? What software/hardware are you using?

Roy,

HUGE sound man! I love it! I listened through crappy little computer speakers with a POS subwoofer and it still sounds big as all outdoors. Great tune!

Keith,

I love 'Unclaimed Baggage'. That's the kind of stuff I can listen to again and again. Once you fix the stuff you mentioned in your post (the flat vox and missed guitar notes) you will have a really great tune on your hands.

Thanks Joe,

I figured I would post my first attempt and then hopefully when I record that tune for real, everybody could check out the difference. (I also used T-Racks for a little mastering, but was not too pleased...Have to tweak more with that)

Thanks again!

Keith
