It depends on the keyboard. Which one do you have? They usually have seperate mono outputs for left and right, requiring not necessarily a stereo cable, but two cables. Whether or not they can use balanced cables is model dependent.

you may have meant a stereo cable as in a trs 1/4". A 'stereo' 1/4" cable is used for balanced connections. Not many 'mono' keyboards support this, especially older stuff. I'm sure newer keyboards support trs, and also have stereo outputs due to there internal effects.

I think I know what you are asking here. I have a cheap Yamaha keyboard with a 1/4" jack on the back that say "output/headphones". That is a stereo jack, but you do not need to plug a stereo cable into it to use it. If you plug in a mono plug you will get a mono sound out of it.

Are the keyboards stereo? It depends on the sound you have selected and what kind of "patches" you apply to it. Many such keyboards have effects you can apply to the sound like chorus or reverb.

Here is what you can do. Plug in a set of head phones and see if you hear stereo. If you do, and you want to record that sound use a stereo plug in the keyboard that converts to two mono plugs to go into the line in 1 & 2 of the protools. Record them to a stereo track.

If you hear mono, just use a mono cable to line in 1.

Or, here is what I would do: I would turn off all the effects of the keyboard so all you have is the basic (probably mono) sound, and I would record that in mono. Then if I wanted to add stereo effects later I would do that in Protools.
