Sweet sounding tune, Roy. One word, LUSH. Love the ambient feel to it...were all the "sounds" from the Squier? Or was there some MIDI in there?

X

Hi Xavier,
There were just a couple of Midi string swells there, but 95% of it is from samples I created with my custom guitar in PT. I created a session that actually became an instrument itself, which I still use now. The Squier was used for just those few solo notes.
thanks, Roy

Hey Jamlaw,

I just listened to your other recordings - great stuff! I liked how you utilized panning to keep your guitar tracks interesting and to avoid monotony. The choruses were catchy and were very melodic for the genre.

Which Mesas are you using - Dual/Tpl Rec's? Are you the guitar player in the band? How long have you been using Pro Tools?

Also, where can I download the GRM plugin? Can you post a link?

Thanks and keep up the great work,
Gary

Allright Gzuz. I like the knowledge born. Your production definately has a latin feel that I can dig. Did I hear an accordian sample? Definetly Norte style.
Is anyone else doing hip-hop/rap?
Most hip-hop producers I've known have allways used outboard gear but things are changing w/ programs like reason and all. I was able to make the transition smoothly since it mimics the old gear. I myself like a combination of both. Maybe this topic is for another thread, so let's bring on the beats.

Metaltim,
I like the EQ fade at the beginning of 'Under'. I can see where the izotope would enhance this effect. I really like what you played on the drums too...the toms work well to set up what comes next. Way to go...
thanks, Roy

matai/Matt,
Good job on this mix so far...it's hard to tell it was under the conditions you described... ...Nice song and acoustic guitar work...the only thing I can suggest without being there with you, is I would like to hear a little more bass in the bass, as in low freq.... but you're doing a very good job, IMO.

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

I'm the guitar player in DECONSTRUCT. I play dual rectifiers, but I used to have a triple, and actually think it sounded better. I've been using Pro Tools since probably 1998 - I got an audiomedia 3 card and we used to mix stuff in our studio to it on 2 tracks. In 2001 I went to Nashville and did some demos with a name guy. We would track and then at the end of the day, he would dump stuff down to his digi 001, go home edit and add production to that, then come in the next day and drop it all back to tape. So when I got back I bought my digi 001 and have been recording exclusively to that since then.

That bandpass plugin used to be free at GRM TOOLS but I went there and I don't think they give it away any more. Sorry. You can download a trial of their stuff though. The GRM Tools are my favorite production tools. It doesn't sound like any thing else. That cool panning stuff you liked - was done with GRM Doppler plugin.

"Under" was pretty cool, my main concern is the quality of the vocals as well as pitch issues... it's hard to listen to at times.

Hey Roy,

Thx for the comments..yeah I have been kind of leaning more and more towards adding some more lows back into the sound. Trust me these were the ****tiest recording conditions I have ever seen, but I learned more cleaning these challenging tracks up than I ever have with pristine tracks.!!

Sooo...I failed to respond to my CD club's selection of the month and I get a CD in the mail from a band I thought I never heard of. But when I put the CD in and started listening...I knew half the songs.

After banging my head for a day or two on where I might of heard this band, it occurred to me to check here. Sure enough, fellow DUC'er 'chucknkd' posted a link back in May to some of his latest work that he partially did on an 001 and Mbox...prior to the apparently successful CD release party.
Chuck has recording and production credits on the first two songs (Free and If I)...which are two of the coolest songs on the CD.

Anyway, I just thought it was cool and wanted to pass it along. Congrats to Chuck on the success!

This is 'Aah Baby', a rough mix and arrangement of a new song to be sung next week. I just put some guitars down and decided to post it in this form before the vocals are done. Nice little slasher intro in the spirit of the season...

Roy.....!
What in the HELL are you playing through! That is an awesome sound. Very old VAI/Zappa/Satch like. Sounds like an old Train Station Digitech reverb, reversed, added more verb and then reverse back, sent through the dryer and then washed again. VERY COOL! Please tell what you are using to get the talk box like sound? Also is that Reason, or another synth? Very sweet sounding!

Any harmonizers being used? Eventide maybe? I WANT ONE! Just to have it! Always wanted one!

Please let me know!

Thanks,

AND YOU HAVE THAT SOUND ON A LOT OF STUFF! Way cool! I dig it! Tell me that is not amplitube!

Please tell me that is some old vintage amp running some serious effects... please..

IntelDoc/Chris,
For that sound, I play my custom guitar (with EMGs) through a Digitech processor. It's a combination of flange and chorus. I run through the processor into PT, often bypassing its own effects to use Amplitube or other plugins. On the the 'synth' stuff, I'm now using Reason as well as my tried-and-true Korg module for different sounds. Behind the string parts are guitar samples I created, and they work very well together.
Yes, I got those excellent songs you sent, and am about to email back about them.
thanks, Roy

the vox where recorded with an NTK, through a Pro vocal, into the 001.. Is the quality lacking?

Nice work.

I threw up a couple more covers on the page we have. Obviously we are working on a cover cd. You'll notice about 75% of the page is covers. Most are rough mixes, but a couple are finished mixes. iTunes sucks so the level seems to be quite low, but they're all listenable. Check it out if you want!! I've been listening to all the stuff on this post for months and all the stuff kicks ass. If somebody is feeling ambitious they should pick 20 or so tracks and make a DUC CD (not volunteering myself haha) Anyway check out the page feel free to leave positive or negative comments, but please leave constructive criticism. And yes we do use a drum machine (get that one all the time)

This forum/topic is really cool, and unbelievable with 114 pages and going strong! I check it every now and then and always find some happening stuff. Roy, your music is consistently original and tasty. This brings up my question- what are the potential risks of posting original music on this site? What kind of protection do people have who post music on a forum like this? Thanks for keeping this going- your efforts are appreciated!

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hi Chris,
I can only speak for myself on this, but I keep all my stuff copyrighted, and I own the rights to it all. These days, one can copyright any group of songs as a 'compilation' the same as copyrighting one song, at the same small fee ($30 currently). As far as posting some of my originals here, the way I see it, owning my own music gives me the right to present it any way I want, including to this limited forum of fellow artists. But also, if my music were promoted, distributed, and sold without my permission, I have a right to sue for any money (and more) that it may generate.
I am currently collecting writer's royalties from 4 dist. sources, and I understand how it works. But, I also think it's healthy to 'audition' stuff to fellow artists, writers, engineers, etc. These guys are not your girlfriend, family, or your mama, telling you you're a misunderstood genius... instead, they hear exactly what you're doing, so it makes one strive and become better at it. It has me, anyway. So I think it's creatively healthy, that's all.
thanks, Roy

I liked your mix. I agree with Roy - you could boost a little bass - I liked the highs, personally.
Good job.

Here's a track from an EP thingy my band recorded:

The Reason

edit: i realized this one is more interesting from a "production" standpoint:

Ready To Talk
you can probably skip to around 2:30 if you just want hear the dynamic shifts and things. we started getting tricky around 3:30.

We did it in our practice space with a borrowed 001. The guy we borrowed the 001 from "helped" us for a while, which meant he messed with EQ and levels on the console WHILE we were tracking. it made mixing a nightmare. also we had no clue what we were doing. it was the first time we'd ever used pro tools or even really tried to record anything.

so be gentle.

I had this melody in my head and managed to record it before I forgot it. The memory ain't what it used to be, but then again I don't remember what it used to be !

I hope you enjoy.

thomsbrain,
You guys did a great job considering the conditions you mentioned...These are good songs, man...interesting, refreshing arrangements. Couldn't understand the lyrics on some parts (like the choruses of 'The Reason'), but I think if these were remixed in better conditions, it would bring out what great songs they are. Good writing, IMO.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

And yet another song. But this is a funny one. We where tracking, but the bassplayer had to leave early. And since we where setup to record drums we decided to record this track as a guide. So only the drums are ment for real.

The vocals are done through a Shure SM58 Beta, and the guitar is done with amplitube through a DI (to make it possible for him to play along with the drums. The singer was just outside the trackingroom, and could peek in through a glass window.

I posted it because to me it sounds funny like it is, and i like the open acoustic sound of it.

This singer is amazing. He only starting singing for about 6 months ago....

We plan on redoing the guitar and the vocals...

Yeah, this was a good sounding tune, I was especially impressed with the drums, that's what jumped out at me as being very pro sounding and musical.
The vox were great too.

Man I wish I had access to a drummer, I'm sick of loops. Someday,.
