Hi!

I have recorded a song using my trusy old 001 for a project that has so far received some fantastic feedback, however I need some feedback on the song, the recording, the lyrics, the structure etc. I would really really appreciate it if you could take the time (4mins) to listen to it and let me know what you think.

It's called Roller Coaster and is available to listen to on MySpace - you can click on the link below!

My Space - Jonathan Haselden

I know lots of people are asking for people to listen to their tunes, but I would really appreciate you listening to it and telling me exactly what you think. You can email me if you want with feedback:

[email protected]

Thanks so much.

Jonathan,

Real nice, like the pick up with the drums. Nice vox, falsetto and all. Recording sounds right in there. Care to elaborate on the signal chain.

Again...best sounding stuff I've heard in a while.

Hey Bob, This sound really nice! I just have a few comments...
The Guitars sound a little faded. Maybe just bring them up a tad and increase the midrange on them. How many guitar tracks are you using?. Also, i would remove some of the verbs from the vocals and snare. I'm at work now, but if you would like to know more of what i think, let me know.
Excellent job nonetheless. Please note that i am no professional Audio Guy.

Peace,

Roger

I'll second Roger on the guitars. Too much bass (though the bass tone is quite good! What'd you use?). In the fast sections, the reverb tail on the snare is too long in general, and maybe needs a smidge of pre-delay. Kick doesn't have the flavor of attack that I like, might be worth trying a different compressor on it. During the fast sections, try shortening the kick sound with a gate. Toms could be brighter. During the slow sections, the hi-hat bleed into the snare reverb is phasey. Maybe gate/automate it out? Maybe send all the drums to the verb, instead of just snare and kick (if that's in fact what you did). Make the drums sound even more boomy and 80's cheesy. Go Phil Collins with it, if you must. I dig the boomy kick, though.

Vocal reverb tail is too long in the fast sections, and could use more pre-delay. Vocal delays could be more sparse and/or interesting (making each tap more F'd up than the previous could be cool). When there's a vocal delay on everything, it looses impact. Automate those sends for special moments. On the reverbs, roll of some high-end or use a de-esser. The sibilance is not doing it for me.

In general, the intro and outro sections are not different enough from the fast sections.

Love the vocal break in the middle of the song. And the "turn the radio up" panning stuff.

I'm no expert, either. Just my opinions/tastes. Hope this was constructive.

If anyone could check out a couple recordings I recently did, that would be cool. The song 'Whatever' was just a little piece I whipped up in like 30 minutes, dont worry about that one. Please give feedback on 'Summer of Dissonance' and 'Failing October'.

Thank you both for the suggestions . Extremely helpful. I'm going to get a few more hours with it this weekend. I'll post an updated mix on Monday.

By the way, I didn't record the bass, but was there for the session. To my memory it was just DI. Lots of massy's tapehead on the bass (awesome plug).

Hi All,

I have a new song up on my webpage and would love to hear any opinions you might have. Whether about the composition itself, the mix, the playing, singing - whatever.

You can give it a listen right here:

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Good rock song!.......I think it could have rocked more if the drums were a little more under played. The singer is good but the track could have sat in the mix a little better with some compression (1176) and hit it hard. All in all though, I liked it.

Thanks for the kind words! I was just curious about the statement above. Do you mean that the drums should be less prominent in the mix or that the playing is too busy?

Thanks again. I love all the help I can get!

Dogcode 07-24-2006 07:47 PM

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Just my opinion, but If the drums were not played as not busy as they were the song would have grooved a little more and not sounded choppy. I hear some kick/snare that may be a little busy and land in the wrong spots. Getting some drummers to hold back a little is tough sometimes. Quite often overplaying tends to step on parts of the song and give it an untight vibe. It`s a hard thing to nail, but it`s fun to keep trying.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

So I posted this a few weeks back I think? It was rough, but we tweeked it, changed the words to reflect current events and wha la. My client of a young 20 years old wrote this for me as events that have happened to me in the past year +. Such a killer tune just as it really hits home as it was written for me. Funny, Sad, but true.... So the re-tweeked are for pre-pro stuff. Drums, etc will be on this in due time. This was straight sounds from Pre's and Compressors into my Apogee. Really happy with it and as it developes it should be a sweet song.

Chain was:

RODE NTk - X73i - 1176 - Apogee
Guitar Body - TLM-103 - API - Distressor - Apogee
Guitar Neck - GT55 - X73i - Distressor - Apogee

Reverb was TL SPACE - Plate Medium 140.

Some fine tuning yet to be done, but so far I dig it. Vocals came out clean and clear at least.

DIRTY DEED'S - TOM ROTHMAN

Enjoy,

Doc

Though I'd throw my stuff in the mix.

I produced my band Crescent Shield. I did it all at home with ProTools LE Digi 001, Presonus preamp, Win 98, Waves Plugins, and traditional drums, bass, gtr and vocals. How's the production?

Hey Doc,

It's been a while since I've done any posting up on this thread. I doubt you would remember, but you helped me out a lot a year or so ago with one of my songs. So, thanks again for that.

Anyway, I just listened to your song and I have to say it sounds really good to me. The vocal style / arrangement reminds me of Martin Sexton - although with a bit more grit in the voice. You (and so many others on the DUC) continue to inspire me.

Caveat,
Thanks for the comments and compliments. This tune is a bit more important to me as it directly relates to events in my life. Too funny really. Thanks for checking it out. I will post more new songs later.

Thanks,
Doc

I hear no tempo change...

Guitar solo sounds great, but the closest thing that I heard to a tempo change was the retardando at the very end. Nice touch...am I missing something Roy? Is there another tempo change? That must be what home fry was referring to.

What is this for? Sounds like an intro for a Japanese animae series. Keep rockin (or rollin, or whatever).

HEY, ANYONE KNOW OF ANY WAY FOR ME TO PLACE A LINK ON THIS FORUM THAT WILL OPEN A DOWNLOAD DIALOGUE BOX? I KNOW I NEED TO PUT THE MP3's ON A SERVER, BUT IS THERE A WAY TO USE DIGIDESIGNS? Prolly not, eh...unless I find out otherwise I'll just use myspace. BUT MYSPACE SUCKS!!! THEY DESTROY YOUR AUDIO! Myspace degrades your MP3's even further by reencoding the music yet again. I really don't want to use myspace...

F myspace. What servers are you guys using to post your music?
