Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
OK, It's been quite a while since I've posted anything in here. If y'all want to check out something a little different, I have some ambient-industrial tracks posted on my Web site.
One of my newest is I Move Unseen Through Your World - http://www.maia-arts.com/music/music/i_move_unseen.mp3 Let me know what you think! Pretty much all various found sounds and little guitar samples, composed in Live and then mixed in PT LE 6.9.2 Thanks - celadon |

Re: Almost 2 year tooling
Hi Roy.
Happy New Year!! It's been too long. I hanen't been on the DUC in a long time. Carol and I bought a cabin in north Georgia and I've been picking my Martin in the mountains. In a couple of months we'll be going to China to pick up our new daughter! I checked out your new web site and it's great. I'll listen to all the songs soon. I checked out Burn and it's like Fripp meets Commander Cody- real cool!. Hope all is well and best of luck. Mike |
Re: Almost 2 year tooling
I haven't done a dance track for so long I thought I'd have a go. It's not strictly pro tools aided but I used Reason and the pro tools wavedriver.

[QUOTE] GIVE ME YOUR UN-RESTRAINED OPION of everything regarding this music... http://www.purevolume.com/corbanartist Rip me apart: Shawn Ames Corban Artist[QUOTE] Hi Shawn...I'de say you've done a very good job mixing these...(I mainly listened to 'Cry' and 'Don't Go')...my only suggestion is that the vocal volume on 'Cry' seems a little too hot and in-your-face present... as a result, it feels a bit 'separated' from the band...maybe just a touch of verb and less vol would give it the same distance as the band. But everything else sounds great, and again, I think you're doing a great job. Post more when you can. -Roy |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
check this out, its the first project i've done start to finish and also performed drums on. i recorded using an 002, some t-racks plugins and mastering suite, just the plain ol' 002 pre's. sadly right after it was released a presonus digimax and waves plugins were added, but oh well. the primary mic was a Audio Technica 4050 condenser. i don't really have what most of you would call a studio space, just my jam space with a TINY room off the side that i use as my control room, its say... 12 feet long and 4 feet wide.

Thanks. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Rick...
I checked out Everything... Good tune over all. The tones are all together and pretty "fat". That lead vocal is pretty hot. I really like the mix over all. The cymbal I kept hearing on the left side sound a little tacky. Reminded me of a sound I used to get out of my boss drum machine. yuck. Lowering the volume of that cymbal would help. You might also consider bringing down the bg vox a touch. Or maybe swell into them... so they don't have such a boo effect, unless that's what your looking for. On the Cannibal song I'd un-freak the vox. can't say I'm a fan of the lyrics... unless it's suposed to be a joke. please no offense. the guitar tone on this song seems a touch boomy... Anyway, good stuff. Really the tunes are pretty good... Shawn http://www.myspace.com/corbanartist |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Shawn, I just reloaded "By the Light of the Radio" - should be up at myspace by tommorrow (Wednesday) - can you go ahead and listen to that one too and get back to me? Thanks! RA

Vision?
Quote:
Thanks for checking out Saddog. I don't know about production vision, though. I start with a song, record scratch guitar and vocal tracks to a click, then start following my fancy, building around it. Eventually I re-record the guitar and vocals under the influence of the new (often MIDI) elements. Very often a song ends up quite different than I originally imagined. I have to confess a real insecurity about my continued use of MIDI synths. Nine times out of ten, friends will say "I liked that song before you put all that crap on it". But it's really fun to at least have a sketch of a more ornate conception of a song. To me, as an amateur songwriter, this is the real value of PTLE and the Mbox. Blah blah blah. Anyway, thanks for your diligent attention to all who post on this thread. |
Re: Vision?
Hey guys, long time no chat. How's everyone been? Looking to get some feedback on my newest batch please. here All the new ones have NEW next to them. been experimenting with depth placement, different writing styles, and a couple new instruments on this end lately. Also put everything up for download that I have jammed on in various projects for the past 15 years sort of to commemorate an archive of stuff. I would suggest numbers: 5, 6, 17, 40, 65, 68, 75, 79, and 80 if you don't have time for anything else. I look forward to getting some opinions on stuff I could do to make this more surf friendly also. Someone suggested I could label the styles on there so far and post my fav reccomendations. Thanks and hope everyone is well. peace

Re: Vision?
Wow! With all those songs you should hit LA or Nashville, don't you think? Then you could put them all up against theirs......
with that amount of writing, you HAVE to do it. Listened to #5 - mix seems good. I dunno about your vox, don't get pissed but it sounds like a guy who can't sing, singing. You know, the "composer" vox. Maybe get someone who has done demo work b4 to do it? Just my $.02 worth. #6, the intro was way too long so I went to the next one. Don't get mad, I do what all publishers do.....you can tell in the first 20 seconds if a song is good or not. #17 has real good potential, production is really nice. Nice intro and A/B sections. #40 - key too basic and intro too long, verse, we've heard it all b4. Try throwing in more chords and a better melody, it's too "one notey" - has potential though. Bring in the gtr in sooner in, fact, cut everything by at least half. The gtr sounds nice but you need to get a "player" in there, it sounds too vanilla. Again, my $.02 worth. Haven't listened to any others, I wish I had more time for it. Do you have any songs in a radio pop format? Meaning bang, bang, and then more bang - all within the first minute. I'd love to hear 'em. Thanks! |

live mix
here's a mix of a live recording I recently did. Live signals were split @FOH & tracked with a Mackie SDR 2496.
fwtbt_150106_3.mp3 It's a rather quick mix & I'm still a novice, so I'm sure you'll find something to comment on (other than the kick being too loud , or the strange lyrics) thanks, Andi |
Re: live mix
Andi:
Very strange indeed. 2 minutes intro and then totally different song. But I like it. |
Re: Vision?
Dave: Didn't know that was your handy work when I got the e-mail man! lol Thanks for the remix man, I appreciate it and glad it is an inspiration.
Rick: Thanks for the words of wisdom also, yeah I've thought about heading into a career as a writer, but have been through enough label work outside of this that I haven't gotten around to it just yet. I know I am not much of a vocalist. I am actually just doing these for demo purposes at the moment to gain feedback on my best works and have a couple of session vocalists lined up for the long term to work on a project. As for Radio Format, I believe you would dig tracks 55, 58, 65, 68, 75, and 78. If you only check out 3, I would suggest 65, 68, and 78 as some of my highlights. 78 is not "radio ready" but I would consider it some of my best as far as writing/arrangement goes. just a side note guys, the lower the number in the list on there the older the song... Some of those old ones I wrote ages ago when I was around 14 years old... lol well, thanks again for the words of wisdom guys, I appreciate the honest opinions. peace |
Re: Vision?
Charlie, I can send you a stereo left right of the mix so you can overlay your guitar vocals over the beat and add flow to the song. Then send me your bounced vocal and guitar tracks and I'll make the final mix down for you. I've changed it a bit since the last hour. Let me know...

BTW this is straight from Charlie's MP3 on his web site. So excuse the mastering imperfections. Life Is So Short the new one is here still in development. Life Is So Short |

Does anyone agree with this statement?!?
I think that a lot of amatuer engineers like to suck the mid out of just about everything. I'm guilty of this too (I'm getting better), and I realized what might be the problem. I think that people are EQ'ing when a track is solo'd. This is a very dangerous thing to do. I basically force myself to do most (if not all) of my EQ'ing when the whole mix is playing. There are so many factors going into the changing of a sound when its played in the whole mix like phase cancellations, frequency responses with one another, etc... So what sounds awesome when in solo, sounds like crap in the mix. I won't go on considering I know we have heard this all before.
What I'm trying to say is that I think with some mid to upper mid pushing, some mixes on this thread would be not only clearer, but way more defined. Again I'm not putting myself on a pedistal because I am just as much an amatuer as anyone here (afterall I am only 17 years old...). I really have a tendency to EQ (which an amatuer terms means suck the mids!) when a track is in solo, but this is just something I've been noticing and trying to help myself! |
Re: Does anyone agree with this statement?!?
Jsswtpmp182: Welcome to the boards, over the years I have seen and run across this on countless occasions. As a guitarist by trade (even though I play other instruments), I used to be quite guilty of scooping out all the mids on my rig when I would play in groups just to attempt to get that fat tone that I heard when I was playing on my practice rig. However, when you mix a group and you get the highs of the drum cymbals, and bass guitar in the mix, your guitar simply turns to fuzz which can work for some tunes, but not everything.
The real secret that I learned over a long time from hanging out around people that blow circles around me as far as engineering skills and music wise is to learn what situations merit certain types of EQ. Notch filtering is a big one when it comes to mixing and mastering that I think a lot of folks, including myself are still baffled on a little. Only time, practice, and lots of encouragement from friends and peers is the secret to a good mix imho. The biggest trick in recording otherwise, is that there are no rules... only what sounds good to the ears, and you have to really know what target audience you are mixing for when you think about it also... for example someone that digs a metal band isn't really going to care for country, and a techno artist might hate folk..etc.. bottom line... just have fun with it! |
Re: Does anyone agree with this statement?!?
Another point in the mastering process above everything that have said about the process, one must never forget that going from your PT to say a PC, car stereo, and home sound system there is reamplification and a signal processing which goes on. So basically in the mastering process it is as important for the masterers to receive the engineered tracks as flat as possible, but also the mastering process must bring all frequencies out in a balanced power (gain) such that when hearing things through other amplified sources, the signals are balanced. Once this is achieved you will have good sound on any source as well as at any power level, low or loud.
My 0.02 cents... |

the Metal core band spent $240.00 for the (clicky kick ) one tune and the other band got 3 for $199? Hope the Metal core band doesn't catch wind of that !!! Ha hahaha.... TBR Stuff
All,
Have not posted a song on here in god knows how long. This is something that has been on here a long time ago, but was in the works at the time. We retracked the guitars... added some solo stuff and then tracked drums. I am happy with the drums for the most part. Very acoustic sounding and all my kit for once. No sound replacer stuff. Floor tom is a tad low for my taste but he liked it. The vocals need to be retracked completely as he is out of tune a lot on the holds, but that is typical on his style. This is a stem mix as I am awaiting the bass parts from my session player. Should be a few days. Then I will dive into it heavy and tweek some parts, get rid of the click on one part that comes through ever so slightly. The guitars were all through the Apex 435's and mixed in with the TLM-103 some too. I think? Cannot remember. All into the API 3124 though. Here was the setup: Guitar - Seagull Signature series - great guitar!!! Apex 435 mics Nuemann TLM 103 API 3124 preamp Vocals Rode NTK - Vintech 1272 - 1176 - Apogee - Pro Tools Drums: 1985 Gretsch 7 ply mahogany Kick - Audix D6 - Vintech X73i Kick 2 - Yamaha Subkick - Vintech 1272 Tom 1 - 421 - API 3124 Floor - 421 - API 3124 Overhead Ride - APEX 435 - API - Distressor - APOGEE Overhead Hat - APEX 435 - API - Distressor - APOGEE Hat - Oktava 012 - Trident S20 Ride - Oktava 012 - Trident S20 Snare Top - SM 57 - Vintech X73i Snare Bottom - SM 57 - Vintech 1272 EFFECTS: Used Trueverb with custom setting across the mix Lexicon PCM-90 with custom setting for drums and vocals Eventide H-3000 on analog delays for vocals and guitars with custom sends each All and all I like the sounds, hate the vocals for now but like the rest. Enjoy, Ocean Thoughts - New TBR mix Doc |
Re: TBR Stuff
Hey Doc, good to see ya back man! Mix sounds great, I forgot about the Apex 435's and mine is stuck away in my mic cab at the moment. I have been using an Oktava MK219 for most acoustic stuff which comes out very warm sounding. Wanna do the grill mod one of these days. I should mix it with the 435 and see what I get. hehe Anyways man, nice work on the new mix of the Herrington track man! I am digging the all acoustic sound for sure. Drop me an e-mail and give me a shout sometime man! peace

Re: TBR Stuff
I lurk on here.
Have not used the 219's but have a pair of 319's that I rarely use anymore. The 435's just do it for me. Thanks for the listen. Will get in touch soon. Doc |
Re: TBR Stuff
hey doc,
great sound. I like the arrangement a lot. Great crisp, clear sound. I'm pining to update my converters this year...but you have a great sounding room as well. The drums sound really good. great job. bp |
Re: TBR Stuff
Thanks BP. Once the vocals are tracked AGAIN and the bass is in there I think it will flow nice. We did the drums in pieces. Some parts are good, the march is kinda cheese, but it fits I guess. If he could hit the notes on his voice it will gel, but I have some ideas for that to work that I will try later. Reheaded the drums with clear Evans G2's on tops and G1's on the bottoms and love it. This was a stem mixed session, but pretty close to the real full mix. Very simply mastered to get levels. I am hoping to convince him to have it professionally mastered to really make it sing.
Thanks though! I am really happy with the kit sound. Used the 421 for the longest time, but then all of a sudden one day I threw the D6 back in and it just worked. I think that and the old 1992 Lalapalooza shirt in the kick is what did it. Gotta have the relic in the kick. Doc |
