<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Hey, thanks for posting that. I really like the NIN approach in the final chorus vamp. Very cool and unexpected.

If you don't mind my saying, it sounds like the tempo has you singing so fast it's hard to really "own" the song vocally. Not that there's anything wrong with the vocal (except the dodgy bits you already acknowledged), it just sounds like the vocals are being herded a bit by the instrumental rather than feeling like the instrumental is supporting the vocal intent.

Does that make sense?

Anyway, it's a great arrangment with some really cool effects and it's quite close to being "there", if you know what I mean.

Thanks again,
Rhett

Hadjipita,
Great song and energy... There are some great guitar/bass chordings and structure here. The Fully Down huh? Well, I definitely expect to hear them go on to big things. Even their philosophy on music sounds good to me. Good job on the mix, too. Thanks for the listen...

~Roy

Looking forward to the others, too...

Thanks Rhett, I appreciate those kind statements. About that 'special' end piece. I have heard renditions of enjoy the silence from MANY bands(Tori Amos, APB, Failure, etc..) And I was thinking, none of these people that redo this song do anything for the end of the song, and since that long period of music can not be matched to the original ending of the song, I figured, Id just put some chorus vox to the end-piece using my special atonal choir skills.

As for the Music pushing the vocals, I know what you mean. I actually originally sung the Chorus just with that opening piano(started with a different idea) and then decided to add drums. and hard solid beat.

I am probably going to go over the vox tommorow with a more decent mic' I just recieved back from the shop from repairs. The version you heard was recorded on a $60 Shure AXS mic.

Thanks for the listen, I appreciate it.

Hadjpita,

Great Job!!! That mix is superb, in my opinion. It's tight, clean, the instruments are sitting nicely in relation to each other and the vocals are right where they need to be. Interesting effects on the backing vocals in the bridge.

The band is really good too, which I know is most of the battle.

Excellent. Putting it in my *Best of DUC* file.

mjames08,
Man, I am so impressed by all 3 of these songs, I truly am. 'Last Night', 'Rope and Ribbon', and 'Frequent Flyer' all show the band's (SURF's) obvious style, but each song is unique and well written. The thing that really gets me though, are the vocals and good lyrics. This may be strange as a comparison, but there's something very Beach Boys about the vocals at times to me.(and man, that should be taken as a compliment, because even the Beatles admired Beach Boys vocals).
Whether you did this in your garage or a killer studio, it's obviously heartfelt music, and you did a great job, im my opinion. Please let me know when you have anything new. Good luck and thanks... ~Roy

Hadjipita,

Just wanted to say that I love the song and that I've actually been a fan since you posted a long time ago (as Hadji, I think). I checked them out on mp3.com and I checked out thier website and they're just great. What's the word? EP coming out? I thought you guys were making a full record... Anyway, do tell... I think they're great and you've done a wonderful job... and I'd love to get my hands on whatever recordings they/you are coming out with. Let me know.

Thanks,

Hi NoviceDollars,
Given that you've got a really good feel going here, here's my suggestions to maybe improve the mix. I agree with SSRJazz on the drums, but I would suggest a different kick and snare too. (both ring too much for one thing... a tighter, but still very deep kick... and a good rap snare would be great with this, I think).
Also, I would be more sparse with the guitar licks. Less would be more here, in my opinion. If it were me, I'de probably add a simple keyboard something , very sparse, that would return here and there.
But all this, with the understanding that it's a damn good song at the core, in my opinion...
