ProTools ignores Limiter Ceiling
Hi everybody,
I recently went from the good old 7.4 to 11 and I'm stuck with a strange issue. I have a project with a clicking sound (that is supposed to be there) in the original recording from the set. So I told my waves L1 to cut those clicks at -0,1, after going through the AIR reverb. It didn't care at all, still 0,0 and clipping. Well, maybe a minor glitch I thought, so I went down to -0,2...and even -1,0 - was still clipping at 0,0. Everything checked in the Master Fader. Then I tried to send it to an Aux and put the Limiter on it. Same issue. Same thing with maxim. Both ways worked perfectly fine in 7.4 - what has changed? Thanks in advance. |
Re: ProTools ignores Limiter Ceiling
Is the Limiter the last insert in the chain? Anything after a limiter would cause clipping if the signal is too hot
I have heard that the internal mix bus had changed in PT 8 compared to 7 where in 8 0 meant absolute 0 so any thing above would cause clipping, in 7 you would have slightly more headroom so opening projects from earlier versions of Pro Tools would "sound" hotter. I could be wrong though. |
Re: ProTools ignores Limiter Ceiling
Thanks for the answer. The limiter is the last plugin in the chain, automation is untouched.

Are you sure your master fader is on 0.0 Chris |

Or are you viewing input metering or output metering? |
Re: ProTools ignores Limiter Ceiling
The l1 isn't a brick wall limiter either. Really high frequency transients get through sometimes.
As said make sure you are post fader metering. |
Re: ProTools ignores Limiter Ceiling
If you post your session (without audio) we can check the routing etc.

Re: ProTools ignores Limiter Ceiling
Yes, the Master Fader is at 0.0
Output Monitoring. I even imported the bounced file and analyzed the peak via Gain-Tool (0.0 dBFS). In Premiere it was clipping as well. Thanks for the offer about the session, I'll gladly get back to it in the next days. I just need to make a new session and be sure, there are no infos left to compromise the NDA. @l1: Good to know, thanks. Which limiter would you define as a "brick wall" then? Then I could test it beforehand. Based on your replies, this is an issue none of you experienced? So it's not a "feature"? jfi: Is the ceiling of the maxim reliable? This one failed too. |
Re: ProTools ignores Limiter Ceiling
Maxim reliable, funny
Take a look at the new Avid Pro Limiter, it was mad with broadcast in mind http://www.avid.com/US/products/pro-limiter |
