Keeping Laybacks in Sync (delay compensation and Video sync offset)
 

Hey guys, I have a question regarding Pro Tools and tape laybacks.

Does delay compensation and the audio delay from video sync offset shut off when in machine control mode or something?

Video Sync Offset is only affecting the QT out of Pro Tools
ADC is suppose to not effect laying back to tape

hey, thanks for the response.

so what does video sync offset do then? playback the quicktime earlier? I always thought it delayed the audio playback.

Video Sync Offset is just what it says, an offset to the video playback. Audio is not affected.

And you should actually leave ADC on (if that's how you've mixed/edited) - the ADC engine is timecode-friendly.

I'm a bit perplexed by this also... it makes sense that if I have Delay Compensation on and I'm not exceeding the delay max (4095 samples at 48k) then my layback to QT should be in sync if PT is working properly.

Do I understand correctly that if one of my tracks exceeds this amount, I have to bypass the delay reporting and manually nudge it earlier by the plugin induced delay amount?

And what if my master fader has a L316 on it? and delay is over 6000 samples? will the whole mix be out of sync with the QT by 2000 samples? I can't quite wrap my head around it. Thanks for any insight.

In that case, record your mix, and realign with the omf. Layback to tape from your output file and deactivate everything else.
You'll have to note your nudge values in case you have to do a revision on the master session.

Not the ideal way to work to but a workaround.

(6000 samples seems A LOT)

Just found this in the manual also:

Bounced Files Are Delay-Compensated
Pro Tools compensates for any bus and plug-in delays due to a bounce. This means that if a bounced file is imported back into a session, and placed directly in time against the source mix, it is time-aligned with the original source mix.


I would take that to mean that it is regardless of whether delay comp is on or not....and my 6000 samples latency (I'm using a 1024 sample buffer) on the master fader doesn't actually matter. Some basic testing seems to support this. The tricky part is when you use these big delay inducing plugs on audio tracks I guess, then you have to start taking notes. I wonder if simply bussing the track to an aux with the same plugs would fix it??
