Network question S3 and iPad (mac)

Hey guys,

please allow me to pick your brain.
I have a mac mini that is connected to an s3 and transport via a switch. Works great.
The mini is usually not connected to the internet for security reasons. (other than taking all my client material offline and making software updates)

Now, I would like to integrate the iPad app over an ad hoc network (wlan)
Unfortunately I miss a way to do this securely. Somehow I cannot seem to set a password for the connection.

Any thoughts?

Password protecting ad-hoc networks has been removed for some while. It seems creating ad-hoc networks via System Preferences>Network is deprecated as Apple's macOS manual explicitly notes to "enable legacy networks checkbox via advanced options" when setting up an ad-hoc network (on recent macOS versions.)

Assuming your switch is connected to Mac mini's ethernet port, you can try this:
  1. In System Preferences>Sharing choose "Internetsharing."
  2. Select destination "Ethernet" from the dropdown.
  3. Select sources via checkbox, e.g., "WLAN."
  4. Set your WLAN options via button below including SSID, channel, Auth-protocol and password.

This will relay all WLAN traffic to ethernet network.

Thanks theAlien,

I can't get it to work, but maybe it's time to invest in a network adapter for the iPad. I've got an old one somewhere, but it's causing a lot of trouble.

Does anybody know a decent adapter that just works and allows charging at the same time?

Apple removed the password option from ad hoc a while back, I don't recall which OS version, but it's been a while since you could set a password on a computer generated wifi.

Aside from a network adapter, you can get a wifi router and just create a wireless network that does not touch the internet.
