Downgrading a New Mac Pro to 10.5.1?
 

I just got a new Mac Pro to replace my old G5. It came with 10.5.2 installed already, and the discs are 10.5.2 as well. I don't have 10.5.1 DVDs available to me. My HD3 crossgrade cards will be arriving soon and I need to get up and running. Is there any way to downgrade OSX to 10.5.1 without the install discs or am I screwed?

10.5.2 - is OK - I am using it and feel no difference to 10.5.1

I would be *really* careful about that - we know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there are significant issues with 10.5.2 and HD.

Unfortunately, there's no way to downgrade without having the proper install DVD's - in this case, either 10.5 or 10.5.1.

1) I know that - but before he goes out and buys a $139 OS X 10.5.0 DVD maybe it would be worth the try. Like I said - I have NO issues with 10.5.2 - Maybe he wouldn't either

2) Would you care to list a few of these "100% Shadow of a doubt" Issues. It would really interest me what the problems are.

I completely understand the first point. Obviously it's their choice if they want to try it on 10.5.2 first.

As for #2 - most of the problems stem from disk i/o, thread handling (lots of 6031 and other errors) and MDS services (Spotlight interrupting Pro Tools and causing errors, or reduction of track counts due to MDS services running).

Thanks for the answers. I'll probably test it out on 10.5.2 since someone has it working, but I'll be prepared to get a 10.5.1 install disc and do it that way if I have any problems.

OK, I am so far unsuccessful getting up and running.

Mac Pro 8-core 3.0 Ghz, 16GB of RAM, 3 SATA Drives.

Trying to run PT 7.4.1 on 10.5.2, I get a DAE error -4. I know it's not certified compatible, but tried it anyway.

I bought a 10.5.1 unopened retail box. When I try to boot the Mac Pro from the CD, I get a message that there is a problem and I have to restart the computer. This makes it impossible to install 10.5.1.

Any ideas that might be helpful? Obviously, I can't send back my old HD3 cards until I get something running on the new Mac Pro.

It's true that you cannot install 10.5.1 on that machine if it shipped with 10.5.2. But there is another way if you have another computer around that can run 10.5.1. Use a second computer to install 10.5.1 on a firewire drive then clone that drive to the new Macpro. It will work.

I did it with a MacPro that shipped with 10.4.11 and I needed to downgrade to 10.4.9 according to Digi specs. I did it and have had no problems. Used Carbon Copy Cloner.

I am running an HD1 on my MacPro on 10.5.2 with no problems. You can also install another internal drive on your computer and install 10.5.1 on that drive. Then just boot from that drive.
