Chris,

I just fixed the link. BTW, the pics show that you've been busy down there! That place is really starting to look sweeeeet! (especially for a project studio)

Your army friends' cover tune: sounds like it was a blast to track, but in all honesty, there's a bit lacking in their musical skill, especially in the vox. Bet it was a real blast to work on though!

Your new guitar pre: Love it, reminds me of the late 80's/early 90's. I can't wait to hear it on something a bit more developed.

So, I might have to get some help with all this HTML and hosting junk. I've got most of the hardware side of setting things up down pat, but I still feel like I don't really have a clue! Perhaps some tips or help from da Basstard could come my way in exchange for bigtime gratefulness!!!

Chris,
AIR FORCE DARN IT ALL!
Ya , they are really good friends of mine. Used to work with the singer. A really good F-16 pilot whom I have been in the jet with many times. SICK AS A DAWG too! I understand what ya mean though. They are good guys, but not full on with somethings. He strains alot with the vocals to emulate people. Some good, some bad. Does dave matthews rather well actually. Ya, they sent me the tune with just the raw waves on it. Like I said they recorded it in Cool Edit Pro and the drums had NO SOUND! It was fun, and I think that I tightened it up some. Good times for all!

As for the Boogie! That thing is a BEAST! I love it, and for 300 bucks it was a no brainer! Brand new tubes, been checked out and all. That is the sound that I like too. None of this totally clear stuff. I have Amplitube and can get that if so desired. Gotta get that ole' school sound, and it is capable of great bluesy stuff too. And of course heavy Tool sounds too. Love it!

Ya, the studio is pic'n up. Just need a few more toys and I am golden. Those pics were cool though. Maybe I will put them in my signature?

Let me listen to your tune now..

Chris,
Love the upright bass. Sounds great for not being cleaned up at all. Is the piano real or keyboard? Sounds great! Dig the brushes....

What mics? Details amigo!

Off to bed to get ready for 3 day bike race in Altoona, PA this weekend. Pain and Suffering here I come..

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Chris,

Steinway B Grand (the real thing!) with an AKG C426B in MS config mic'd pretty darn close, a bit too close for my taste. I wish I'd raised it a couple inches. (Frank Vincent on piano, jazz professor at Eastman in Cincinatti for more than twice as long as I've been alive)

Upright Bass was a single original AKG C451e within inches of top of the left (players left) f-hole. (Bill Grimes on bass, Assistant Dean at the Louisiana State University School of Music)

Drums had an Audix D1 on snare, a D112 on kick, and a pair of akgSE300's with cardioid capsules for OH's. (Jonathan Grimes on drums, Bill's 18/19 year old son!!!)

I tracked a lot more than this, but that's all I used in that mix. I had about 8 tracks muted. I felt the superclean sound and subtle mixing just felt better with these guys. I can't wait to master it. I'll work on a more specific reply to the e-mail you sent me a while back on MeKong? Maybe attach some of my waves starter presets as well. Good Luck in that bike race! Talk to you soon.

Chris, the standard is "That Old Feeling."

Nice playing, and nice sound. The piano could use more highs, I think, something about it sounds muffled to me, but it's probably a much better sound than I'd get, so bear the source in mind when listening to criticism from me. The bass and drums have great blend, a warm live sound.

Nice work.

IntelDoc, I liked both of your selections. You seem to get a consistent polished, clear sounding mix. What are you using for pre's? Are you using the 001, or 002?
thanks.

Badperson,
There is a link below my name with my setup.
I use the digi002 with the Presonus Digimax LT. I also have Waves Platinum, BombFactory, and Some Antares stuff. The MeKong song, I did not track, but was able to enhance for my friend in PT. As for my "wanker" guitar playing that was direct with the MesBoogie Studio Preamp and some other effects in the chain. (Ada MicroCab 2, BBE, etc)

Thanks for the compliments! I am learning! :-)

Thanks to all for their comments and compliments. I never would have guessed you guys to like the "realistic" sounding stuff I do. By the way, the piano went through the 002's pre's, and everybody else went through an original digimax. I wish I'd known I was going to use so few of my tracks. I'd probably have tracked at 96 if I could have seen into the future at the time. Thsi session was really an experiment to see how my 002 and all my "cheap" pre's sounded compared to our TDM system at this place. I think it sounds better than anything I've recorded on the TDM system. Once I started mixing, I really decided to toss out all the fluff tracks and go for something simple and sweet, like the Norah Jones album.

Once again thanks for all the compliments. Now that I'm broadband, I look forward to listening to more of everyone's stuff.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Wow, Arch, not exactly the kind of tune I expected with a name like Archtop!

I must say, that's really superb mixing. Everything is very clear and distinguishable. My only recommendation would be for the drummer to get a good set of Evans heads and burn all of his remos and gels. The toms lack tone, but you track what's there. I think you really did an excellent job. Perhaps a producer on that tune could help with some arranging and synthwork to perhaps make it a bit more "radio-friendly" (i.e. general public friendly).

Overall Arch, I give it two thumbs up. The page is super finicky though, I consider myself lucky to have even managed to listen to it.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Chris
Thank's for your persistance w/ the link.
drum's were as wide open as can be. 24" Kick no hole, no pillow, just front head felt, no gel's or mutes on tom's w/uncoated Ludwig heavy head's
I feel with a little lighter hand on the cymbal's, I could have got a better tom sound , but I won't get started again on my continuing soapbox topic about cymbals bieng hit too hard ( even by my favorite drummer)

Interesting arch. Perhaps you're correct about the overheads/cymbals thing. I'm really surprised that the toms came out so bland in such an open kit. (The kick sounded fine to me though!) Don't look at my comments as ego or anything like that. It's just the way my ears react. Overall, I really really think its a great mix.

Is this bad or really bad or REALLY bad or REALLY REALLY bad? Vocals start out about right for the sound I was going for, but then they get too low.... I need to go back and automate them up a little I think.

By the way, not my band... just a random song I've done latley.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

ee99ee- This mix isn't that bad. Really the only thing is that the guitar is overpowering everything else. I think if you bring it down when everything else is playing the mix will be much better. As far as the song goes the main guitar riff is cool but it drives into your brain like a drill after a while. Some lead work maybe would help. Good work.

ee99ee,

I like your song, it has a cool live jam band sound to it. I like the drum sound, and the bass sound.

What mic did you use on the guitar?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

BP,

I really like it, all the tones and eq are will done. The voice is great for this style! Just one little tiny recommendation: near the end of the tune, the background ooh's make the mix a tad right-heavy.

Hey Chris...
Just listened to your jazz tune finally, and it was a pleasure. Very nice job on the recording...I've done a few jazz ads in my time, but none were this nice (of course I only had 60 seconds for each one... ). In Destin recently, I listened to Norah Jones quite a bit... it really fit the feel of the place perfectly. Anyway, great job...

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks Roy,

I took the tune down today. Hopefully I'll have a new mastered version up soon. I doubt anyone will really be able to tell a difference though, as jazz mastering is usually very very subtle. You can really only tell the difference when you listen on several different systems.

Well, post it anyway when it's done...I'de like to hear it. I've had this first version for a few days, but couldn't listen until I got WinAmp and the 6.1 WaveDriver together...(oh you know all that..) good stuff though, Chris...

Roy,

O Sleepy Moon! What a fitting title. I'm about to hit the sack and am absolutely enjoying the calming effect this tune is having. I only wish I had some slide chops myself!

Anyway, thanks for posting it! Do you have any albums out? Maybe want to work on something sometime? I may be up for a trip to Memphis sometime, or perhaps you could come down here for a little bass fishing!

With kindest regards,
Chris

The real title is That Old Feeling .

(I usually save trimming the start and end times for actual CD-authoring.)

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

The guitar is overpowering, but it wasn't as bad until I exported it to MP3. Very odd.... A lot of new rock/alt music has an overpowering guitar, there are just usually 50 of them rather then... 1 or 2.

The guitar was direct as was the bass. What's funny is that the guitar has a HORRID BUZZ in it the whole time, you can hear it in the song that's on the site, but not nearly as bad as before I attacked it with a parametric EQ.

Drums have an Audio-Technica Drumset mic kit on them, with a pair of BG 2.0 overhead condensors... cheapos. :/ Need to get 3 new condensers and a decent vocal mic.

There are more songs [that don't sound as good] on our site: www.dropoutstudios.com.
