Joz....
The track sounds great!.......but I think I`m hearing some Autotune issues especially in the first verse. As Doc said....maybe your using it for the Cher effect...but I`m personally not a fan of Auto tune. I`m using Waves Tune and find it to be brilliant. jmo... ..Dog |

Re: Overnight Lows
Wow, I've forgotten there was a chromatic auto tune in the verses, it was even tuning notes out of tune. I took the auto tune out and finalized the 2 mixes.

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Here's a local band I just engineered/mixed/mastered/produced all on 002r.
The dowry Guerilla recording at its' best. Crappy drums and amps, in even crappier spaces, but great songs. |

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Thanks Robbie. Per your questions, I've got an 002 desk and run PT LE 7.1 (latest cs -- I've no desire to jump to 7.3 given the gripes posted here). Externally, I use a tc electronic Gold Channel digital pre. I LOVE that thing. I run the "Gold Vocal" preset on my vox with an Audio Techna AT2020 mic. I actually have an ADK $600 tube mic, but that lil' AT2020 with the tc just beats everything I have. I also use that pre with the close mic preset along with a SM57 to mic my lil' Fender Champ-like 8" amp.
My acoustic guitar and bass are run through a Presonus Eureka pre. I fiddle and tweak to suit. Sometimes I like to split the bass line and run it through the Eureka and the other signal through my lil' Korg bass emulator. But mostly I run it through the Eureka. My drums are EZ Drummer and I run individual outs to separate audio channels for the entire kit. I research my grooves and fills and then "play" 'em. I then go back and stack my tracks with samples from my Yamaha DTXtreme IIs elec. kit. Mix 'em down to stereo channels and voila! Sampled drums that don't sound too "sampled." I have Waves SSL4000 plug package, but since I've gotten the McDSP Project Studio bundle, that's pretty much all I use in terms of compressors, verbs and EQs during mix. I love that bundle. The best $400 or so you can spend IMHO. Didn't really know what people were talking about when they would say this eq or that compressor is "transparent" until I got the McDSP. You can carve so much in terms of eq that it's not even funny. I wish I knew more about eq'ing but I can tell that in the hands of someone who does, this puppy will allow you to do real sonic sculpture. Alas, I'm not that guy. Finally, and I apologize for running on, I do believe the mod has give me a more "open" sound to my tracking and mixes. I think there's a level of detail, especially in both the bottom and top end that the improved pres and converters give me. But I wouldn't rule out the placebo effect either. However, as a 002 owner, I can't get the full Tweakhead mod which gives you the added power stage enhancements. That's for 002R owners only. But from what I've read from those testimonials, those guys and girls are like Moonies they're so sold on the sonic difference it makes. So, short answer, I'm glad I made the investment. For me, any advantage I can get is going to help me and my stuff. Of course, your mileage may vary. Best, Wheels |

DigiDeserter
Hi all. Just wanted to report, for anyone interested, on my post-PTLE experience. About three months ago, I got so fed up with Windows (not PTLE, mind you, Windows), that I drove two hours to the nearest Apple Store and payed retail plus VAT for a new MacBook Pro and LogicPro. Here is my impression: PTLE is like a stripped down Audi, LogicPro a fully-loaded VW. For now, I am content to distract myself from the poorer performance and handling by playing with the sunroof, the heated seats, the fog lights, and the GPS. But, my dream car is still a full-blown ProTools TDM system (a fully-loaded Audi S4). Still fed up with Windows, so I guess that'd be on a Mac. Live and learn.
Some things I prefer about PTLE: (1) Sound editing! Holy crap, you guys don't know how good you have it. (2) Fades. No automatic nonlinear fades in LP, as far as I can tell, though envelope drawing seems pretty robust. (3) ReWire simpler. I adore Reason, so this is a big deal to me. (4) Less cute. More businesslike. (5) Algorithms for bundled effects (DigiRack) are cleaner, I think. DigiVerb is so good, I don't know why people spend money on Waves and other stuff. LP has lots of toys, but they're plastic and break easy. (6) This community (DUC). Nothing like it in LogicLand. Some things I prefer about LP: (1) Navigation. Ergonomics much better than PTLE. This is not a look & feel thing, I'm talking about simply getting to where you need to be in the song, zooming, etc. (2) Punching. Simpler, more intuitive. (3) Some things make a bit more sense, like single keystroke toggling to global automation...you guys would love it! (4) I guess the MIDI editing is a little better (this is LogicPro's big claim to fame), but people must be doing heavy-duty, precise editing (which I'm not) to care that much (which I don't). Some things I prefer about Windows: not a [bleep] thing. Some things I prefer about Mac: as Bill Hicks once said, "you can stop your interior dialogue"...it's just better. Try it. I suppose I could go on. Truth is, at my level, DAW doesn't matter (though platform is a serious issue), I acknowledge this. Anyway, here are my first three LogicPro recordings: There You Were In My Room A Song About A Cat The Mountains Of Tomorrow |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
JP,
Sounds really, really good. Very impressed. The musicianship is first rate as is the songwriting. Not to be a smartass, but I think you need the contraction for Your not alone -- as in "You're not alone." Great stuff, man. Wheels |

JP didja ever get down to Muscle Shoals?

Latest stuff...
I have just completed my latest album Periodically. It is 119 songs from the first person perspective of all of the elements on the periodic table. For the conclusion I made up an element DBLFesium #119 which I am very proud of. Please have a listen. The first 2/3 of this record were recorded on a Digi 001 then I upgraded to M-Powered with a Lightbridge and 7.3 which was totally sweet.
At any rate, I hope you enjoy DBLFesium www.dblfstudios.com |

Hey guys, I'm new to the whole pro tools thing, but here is some of my solo music I've been working. I'm a bass lover at heart, but I decided to do something on the side. I'm really interested in compositions with samples, so I guess my music is based on that. Take it easy everyone... www.myspace.com/tradingaces Parker |

Hi Joz......excellent. I am still enjoying your earlier files! But Leech is great too.
I admire your production skills....very nice usuage of effects and nice guitarwork too. I don't know which reverb you use. I've had my Digi 003 console factory for aprox. 6 months now. I am still not able to get the s*** to sound decent :-)...d-verb that is! Best regards, luffe |

Re: Overnight Lows
Wow... Great work Joz!
I feel a little sheepish going next. Anyway here it is I'd really like some feedback on this one. This is a track I just did for my new solo project. It's about 90% done... I need to fix the vocals a bit and add some harmonies. Production wise is there anything that jumps out at you that doesn't sound so good? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!! Koe. |
Re: Koe\'s project
Hi Koe.
I think you've done a great job on this - technically. Musically however it's a terrible music genre you're in, sorry....definitely not my cup of tea! Mind and ear disturbing. Aprox. halfway I got some kind of relief though, but unfortunately it lasted only short and the music came back even worse. This might not be the feedback you were looking for.... but it was honest...you know, luckily someone like the daughter and someone the mother and everyone will be happy in the end.... Anyway good luck with your project. Best regards, luffe |
Re: Koe\'s project
Hi Luffe,
Thanks for the feedback. I was well aware posting it that it might not be everyones thing... but I'm glad you thought it sounded good technically, even if you didn't like the actual music! Thanks for being honest! I'd love any other feedback/constructive criticism too... This is my post 'catchy', 'poppy', 'danceable', whatever, song at the moment so I'd really like it to get it sounding as best I can production-wise. Thanks, Koe. |
Re: Overnight Lows
Joz,
Really like that drum sound and gives me something to work toward on some band stuff we are going to be working on soon. Maybe you can give me some advice for the upcoming recording on mic placement. I'm hoping to keep the drums to 4 to 5 mics. I have for mics to choose from: A kick mic Audio Technica, Rode NT 1, 2 SM7's, 1 SM8, 2 C3 condensers, and some audio technica voc mics ($100-$150 price range). how would you set up for optimal sound? Particularly on your overheads and room mics, versus specific to toms. Advice on how to mix them to help with bleed? again, fantastic work. Really like your guys' music and appreciate the mix! TDub |
Re: Overnight Lows
Koe,
Dramatically believable, spirited, and interesting. Great job! |
