Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Hey

this is my first post here (in this thread that is)..

i have owned a mbox2 for about two weeks, and this is the first recording i did.. i actually started it just to try out pro-tools a little more than i have.. but i kind of like what it developed into.. so i figured i might just post it here..

very plain and simple (unfortunatley mu guitar hums pretty bad since i don't have my computer hooked up to a grounded wall outlet, but i'll live with that for more serious recordings)

also, i sold my event monitors for some dumb reason, so the sound might be totally off, feel free to let me know.

thanks,
kenny

Hi Kenny

No sounding good across my monitors, what sort of mike did you use on your vocals, do you run a frontend? Did you do much effects processing with the vocals?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

hi,,

what do you mean by frontend? (not sure what you mean in this context.. english isn't my first language )

i'm not using any external processing before the mbox at all.. I just hook my Rode NT1 large membrane to the mbox and record.

after that i used only TrackS eq and compressor on the vocals. and then bussed some of it to a waves rverb (i think it is rverb, might be truverb also).

the guitar is lined staright into the mbox as well.. i use cole clark, the worlds best guitars.

haha.. are those plugs bad? or you mean i should use more? .. i have learned a lot of [bleep] through the years, but i still have a lot to learn regarding fx use and mixing.. but actually, just the switch from my m-audio with cubase to mbox2 with PT makes a huge difference in sound.. somehow..

and no, i use n o vocal booth.. this song i linked here is just the mike beside my computer..
there was a time when i used a vocal booth, but i have no place to set it up where i live now.. and it sounded like [bleep] anyway.. it's a couple of years ago though..

thanks for the comments.

Well Tracks EQ is not the best, even in the standard LE pack. Did you use a preset with the Compressor?

oh.. i really like the tracks.. .. i'm not using the version that comes with the LE thouigh.. i have the full version.. and yeah, i usually start with a preset, then change it a little.. mostly because i'm not that great when it comes to fx processing.. but i'm learning

which plugs would you recommend? lets say money is not an issue..just for the fun of it

This is my real first recording, local radio station plays it, thats ok now, it sounds ok.

But, the national radio in Finland (Yle) says it needs to be remastered, then we might have a chance to get that song where it belongs to, hehe.

Seriously, what are your suggestions?

It is here

Finnish...nice mix overall...good guitar sounds. All I would suggest is the lead vocal could be slightly brighter, IMO. The rest of the mix is fairly bright and crisp, and I think the lead vocal needs some eq tweakage (maybe as simple as pulling back some low end).
You say Yle says it needs to be 'remastered'. Has it been mastered the first time yet? If not, find a good ME and play him your current mix first(if possible)...then make adjustments per his advice.

Good song...good mix so far.....good luck.

Hi Wheeltard.....really nice song. All sorts of possibilities for coloring the production up(mandolins, late strings...whatever), even it you wanna keep it simple. I do suggest pulling up your vocal up during the verses(nice job on the vocal)...hard to catch the lyrics in places. It's fine in the choruses.

If you develop it further, post it again. Enjoyed the listen...

Here are a couple of songs that I did on my 002 (Untitled and Insomnis Reluctari). The first two were done on the 002 and the middle songs were done on a 4-track about 6 years ago. The last two were done on Reason. I was just goofing off trying to learn how to work it.

There are some great tunes on this thread! It's interesting to hear all of the different styles.

Re: Congrats Roger, I just took the big Plunge too

Roy,
Thanks for the feedback. I posted the lyrics up on Songramp and will be working on it some this weekend. This is one of those songs and arrangements that are deadly for me. Because my impulse is to add, add, add... and the feel of the song is just the opposite. And I don't do sparse very well. Okay, I don't do a lot musically very well. But where a deft touch is required, I really struggle. But thanks again for the listen.

P.S. -- You wouldn't by any chance be offering up some mandolins for this would you? I'd be happy to send over some files

For the vid, honestly I would vote for The Breaks tune for the first one man. I can see where the director would push for What Do I want first caus it is a little more up-tempo and has that power pop vibe in it, but The Breaks is better writing outta the two even though both would make a cool vid. man. For My Oh My, it has that Cranberries/No Doubt thing to it which in its own right isn't bad, but I'd save this one for a third single possibly man unless you're going for like a White Stripes type vid which might be interesting too... Goodluck with the shoot though man, and if you guys get out on the road let me know if you get up this way to MI. peace

Aedryan: honestly I cannot provide any direction to metal tunes on here that I recall in specific. We've been through several thousand pages of posts and maybe some metal writers may be able to help you on this one. However, were you looking to check out how the Mbox2 pre's? Regardless of how a metal tune in here sounds on the Mbox2, there is a little more to the sound than just the Mbox honestly like mic placement, room acoustics..etc.. but if you are looking for tunes to just jam to and check out, then this is certainly the place. I can honestly say that there is a wide range of talent in here. Goodluck in your search. peace

Hi Wheel...
I can try something on it...maybe some mando or a few guit licks to color it up...... email me an mp3 of it with a countoff(just anything) to paste to my track so you can sync me up when I'm done. It sounds freeform(?), as in not to a click, so I just need the countoff for syncing up later. Hopefully I can try something pretty soon. ~Roy

Roy,
No click track to this puppy. I am the world's worst when it comes to playing with a track and I have NO excuses. I'm (supposedly) a bass player after all . This is pure demo. However, I'm going to take another pass with a drummer this weekend (I'll let him deal with the click - I love independent cue mixes) and will have a count-off. When I lay down a little more of the sound bed (bass, accoustic, etc.) I'll forward your way. I'm assuming I can private e-mail you? Question though, I'd like to send it as high a res as possible -- even if it is only .mp3 -- what's the limit your inbox will take? 5 mges or less?

Anyway, probably will have something for you by Sunday. Thanks for the offer.
