I'm throwing two up here for review. I co-produced, engineered, and performed on them, but I am not the artist. I did however get the artist's permission to post these (as he looks forward to any comments you guys might have). Anyway, I could talk all night about the sessions we had making these tracks. It's a lot of fun when the artist has a good image of what he wants, yet is more than willing to experiment. It was crazy fun.

rockrev,

Yeah. The unmistakable sound of talent. Who is this guy? Okay, so for SWJAC, I have three comments:

(1) Awesome song.
(2) Every sound has distortion, and I like that, but my ears got hungry for some kind of occasional distortionless "reference", I think anything would do, something to remind the listener that the lo fi vocal and instrument effects are intentional.
(3) Did you try killing the beat and/or bass during the "cage people like animals" sample following the first chorus? Is that too cliche?

rockrev 11-12-2004 07:40 PM

Re: Crazy and Fun Sessions!

(1) Thanks!
(2) Well, we messed with the distortion and decided that the choruses were the only parts that we wanted distorion-less (listen to the L-R vocals on the chorus sections). I actually like all the distortion on this one, but thanks for the suggestion.
(3) Killing the beat is definitely worth a shot. I'll try it.

Thanks again for your comments.

Whatever man...I personally really dig 'Poisoning the Monk'...I don't know what you're talking about "not worthy". Mellow juxtaposing a serious under/overtone to the piece.

Re: Crazy and Fun Sessions!

Rockrev,

I'm diggin' 'she was just another criminal'. That's some fantastic sound-design going on throughout that thing. There are a couple of extremely minor changes I'd might of tried...but are purely a matter of personal preference...and therefore not really worth mentioning. Great mix and master here. I could actually see something like this in a movie soundtrack...

Re: Crazy and Fun Sessions!

Thanks Chris. I really had fun working with NH3. Oh, I'll be uploading the radio edit of "SWJA:Criminal" in a few minutes (I think you guys will enjoy the creative ways we bleeped things out). NH3 has given me permission to submit it to the "Best of the DUC CD." I'll be in touch.

Thanks again.

Wow!
maybe it's the way Smiling Politely treats his vox, the song reminds me of Skinny Puppy tracks, but with a contemporary feel.
Very COOL!

Re: here\'s my latest two tracks

CellAutomata,

Great Stuff...good ideas...good compositions and mix. My only reccomendation (nad this is a very small one) would be to extend the rhythmic elements by themselves an extra 8 to 16 bars ahead and after any melodic elements. The first tune's beginning is great...maybe another 4 bars. The ONLY reason for doing this is to make it easier for other DJ's to spin it...there are no musical reasons for doing this at all.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: here\'s my latest two tracks

Thanks for your feedback, Chris.
Track 1 is made from 70 tracks premixed down to 32. I do plan on making edit changes here and there. I am also working on a DJ-friendly remix ... should be finished by December sometime, all depending how much free time I'll get. Are you a DJ by any chance?

CellAutomata 11-14-2004 08:00 AM

Re: here\'s my latest two tracks

And thank you too Roy!
I'm glad you've enjoyed Track 1 all the way.

There will be some changes made very soon. I plan to change the timbre of the "my desire" vocoder part, as well some other elements here and there.

I'm a big fan of Reason. And I hope Track 1 proves that Reason does kick ass. Reason + Protools = deadly combination.

Of course, all the 70+ tracks were premixed down to 32 tracks within Reason, with lots of automation. Then the 32 tracks were exported to Protools for further editing, mixing, and mastering.

I forgot to mention, al the guitar parts were played by Alan Moon -- one of the best guitarist in Vancouver, BC.

Chris Cavell 11-14-2004 08:50 AM

Re: here\'s my latest two tracks

Cell,

No, I'm not a DJ...but have helped a number of DJ's produce their own tracks. (It's great to know a few people who can use reason to it's full capability...today's studio musician roster should include skilled artisans in this area, and I'm lucky enough to know a few.) What you'll find among DJ's is that tracks that have rhythmic intros and lead-outs (with little to hint at the key of the song) are prefferable for live shows. It makes beat matching a piece of cake, and prevents any harmonic clashes during the transistion b/w songs. It also leaves some space for some DJ's to introduce their own fills, samples, and mixing during the transition. The one-minute or more rhythmic intro and leadout are sort of the definition of "spin-friendly". If you get your hands on vinyl from any of the top three or four live dj's who also produce, you'll probably notice this as a trend amongst their better and more spun works. It's the harmonic clashing that's tough on the ears during the transition...so you'll probably notice that the better tracks use more ethereal harmonic sounds that don't really hint at the key of the song during these sections.

Cheers,
Chris

I posted this one the DUC Xmas thread also...

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

I haven't been able to do much recording in the past 6 weeks, my computer went down. Learned a
BIG lesson about backing up!
So this is what you get when you're in a rush. Enjoy...

This is just a general post, but over the weekend I listened to a bunch of stuff on the last couple of pages in this thread and it was all really good. I forget the names of the songs; I know this is pretty worthless feedback, but keep it up!

Hey everyone.. here is my first post of my bands songs and my recordings in my studio.
We recorded these in 2 days, mixed and all. I think the mix is still a little dry though, may need some more reverb on vox and snare, but not sure....

Please leave ALL good and bad comments, only makes me better to hear both...

freds first protools project

freds first protools work

This is something I’m currently writing for a ten minute film short, just under 3 minutes of it here, the first proper project I’ve done, also the first project I’ve done in protools….

There’s another theme I’m working on to tie in which I’ll upload when its more near completion - the rest of it is made up of less obvious ambient music moving around these two themes (which are quite different to one another).

Not quite finished this bit, want to drop the harpsichord down in the mix, but its done enough to see what people think, or don’t think. I wrote, played n produced all parts, oh, apart from the guitar which I got my mate to play for me coz I aint so hot on the banjo

Been too busy for music lately, but on Saturday I had a sort of date with that gal I've been chasing all year, naturally I got nowhere, such is the lot of the hapless musicain, but lying in bed at 5am still awake, with my tiny overworked brain still in turmoil this fell out of my head, I recorded it quickly (4 hours) in the morning when I woke up, feel my pain!!

Eyes Wide Open

(Stick with it until 1:43 when the strings go all sappy)

Recorded, mixed, and mastered Adapt...the third album from Acoustic virtuoso, Trace Bundy. Also recorded, mixed, and mastered the audio for the DVD which comes with the CD.

Check him out: www.tracebundy.com

All done on the ol' 002rack.

I also just wrapped up mastering Josh Allan's debut CD, All The Acoustic Pop You Can Drink and I'm currently recording and mixing tracks for, as well as mastering, Dan Perkin's upcoming Christmas album with additional mixes from Carlisle Young.

Additional upcoming projects include: recording, mixing, and mastering a Christmas single from Newcomers Home, as well as continuing ongoing collaborations with their lead singer/songwriter, Katie Herzig.

Give it all a listen.

CellAutomata,
Finally heard 'Track 2'...as with Track 1, this is very nice too. You managed to keep it interesting with no key change. Good job.

FSM,
Good songs...very 'Nickelback' in style. Guitars, vocals, are done well...the mixes could stand to feel a little 'larger' in the hot places(to me), but good job on everything overall.

Good song as usual Roy (do you ever get tired of hearing that from me? )

I'll do some listening this week, I'm getting to deep in this rap thing right now... And since I'm afraid of rap maybe some of the stuff that is posted here will drag me up again

2004 DUC Disc Update

Just a quick update on the 2004 DUC disc (not to be confused with the x-mas disc ):

I sent out emails to all entrants yesterday and to some interested persons who've not submitted anything yet. If you fall into this category but haven't gotten my e-mail...alert me to it!

Anyone who hasn't submitted anything, or expressed interest in submitting anything, but feels now that you'd like to participate...don't hold back. A deadline has not been set, but will probably come sooner rather than later. Some of the tunes on the page have been reworked some...I encourage you to come check out the entries (link in my sig). Pretty soon this 'project' will be given a thread of it's own...hopefully so we can get a better representation of the fantastic music often submitted here. The current selection, while great, is but a tiny slice of what could be represented, so I encourage anyone with even the slightest inkling of submitting something to contact me.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: todays project: Sharing the Gifts

Allen, I can't download your tracks. The LoFi quality of the streaming makes it difficult to hear your stuff properly and give it a true crit.

But I will say the guitars sound great, the vocals sit nicely but (probably because of the LoFi) get a bit harsh. Bass needs beefing up. It's nice and clearly defined but needs more balls. Drums, similar story to the bass and the cymbals sound CRAP in streaming quality.

Nice tracks, you guys are very good.
