Thoughts on Digi\'s Future OS Platform

With Avid's restructuring and leaving the Mac world for NT, does anyone feel that Digi (being owned by Avid) will follow the same road as Avid?

Does Digidesign have an official press release in response to Avid's Media Composer not being supported on th Mac past OS 8?

As a potential heavy investor in Digidesign products, I would be interested to know. An "avid" Mac user, I would like to see Pro Tools continue to prosper on the Mac OS Platform.

If this has been previously discussed, could you point me to the right place...

thanks....

AVID is not losing the Mac platform. Check
their website under "corporate news releases".
Digi won't either. Here is a quote:

"Mr. Krall said, "An extensive evaluation of our marketplace and business strategy confirms that substantial opportunities
exist for Avid's industry leading products. We are committed to enhancing the product offerings serving our core markets on
both the Macintosh and Windows NT platforms. We are doing so with a structure that reflects significant cost reductions,
yet in a way that will benefit our customers. Targeting future growth, we have outlined focused, achievable operational
strategies in two areas where we can bring a distinct competence – the Internet and advanced work group solutions.""

Thanks for the response Kevin.

I guess I'm a little confused. Check out http://www.macintouch.com/nab1999avid.html.

It says that Avid's Media Composer 8.0 will be the last release for the Mac platform. All future releases will be on the NT platform.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Thoughts on Digi\'s Future OS Platform

You are correct that they posted this during
NAB this summer. But after a lashing by about
a million AVID users on Macs, they immediately
withdrew their withdrawal. The next day took
it all back and said they will fully support
G4's and everything else Apple puts out.
I have a feeling it was some political crap
that AVID was pulling due to Apple putting
out an amazing and amazingly low cost edit
software product called Final Cut Pro. It is
incredible and probably has AVID feeling a
bit incsecure about charging $65,000 for what
Final Cut can do for $12,000. Sorry AVID,
time to change your pricing! Hope that clears
it up! KW

Marcello,

Avid definitely felt the price of dropping Mac support. Not only did they get an earful from Mac users, but their stock immediately nose dived after the NAB announcement.

They were quick to issue a statement to the effect that it was all a misunderstanding.
Damage control or not, Avid is at least publicly supporting the Mac platform again.

I think that the G4 Sawtooth machines helped Apples cause as well - those machines now have enough buss bandwidth to support two streams of uncompressed video, a feature previously available only to those using fast Pentium based machines.
