Upgrade/Crossgrade process

Does anyone know the process of the crossgrade from PT LE 8.0.4 to PT9 in terms of what will be asked for to 'qualify' for the crossgrade pricing?

I noticed when I upgraded my PT HD 8.1 - one window asked me for my 'qualifying hardware' serial number. Good move on Avid's part in preventing people from just buying an eBay asset for ProTools HD 7.4 or 8.0 and then trying to get a PT HD9 crossgrade pricing. Good of them to tie it to the serial number of hardware you own.

But I'm wondering what they will ask my son who just 'days' before the announcement on PT9 bought a new MBox3, simply as a 'dongle' to open PT LE since he works exclusively in Logic and just wanted ProTools for studio compatibility. We also bought Digitranslator (needless to say I'm HOPIN' mad!! - a complete waste of money now).

But since at Avid's member page you can't 'register' software that came in a box. I'm wondering what they will ask for to 'prove' that my son is a ProTools LE 8.0 owner and be eligible for the upgrade pricing to PT9 (non HD).

Any thoughts?

Re: Upgrade/Crossgrade process

The PT9 upgrade from LE specifically goes by the serial number of the hardware, in this case the Mbox 3.

By the way, you may be able to sell your Digitranslator license on Ebay or here on the forums, as there's plenty of people who may not be upgrading to PT9 just yet, who may want to use it.

NSF,
Thanks, but something doesn't ring true there. In the PT 9 world it's no longer tied to hardware. Can't I buy PT 9 standalone if I want to use an Apogee piece? What 'serial number' wound I input then?

The serial number is just to qualify for the cheaper price of the crossgrade rather than paying full price for PT 9.

I bought the PT 9 crossgrade because I own an Mbox 2, but I intend to use an Apogee Duet instead with PT 9. Now I'm just stuck waiting for my PT 9 crossgrade box and ilok to arrive. I prefer to get major software on a CD/DVD rather than just a download.

Thanks, Rob. That explained it - they need it only to qualify you for the crossgrade pricing. Now the question is where do u find an MBox3's serial#.

Last question.. This thing about the $99 crossgrade pricing for purchases after 10/4/10... does that only apply to crossgrades from an PT HD 8 system bought after 10/4? At the Avid store it's not even an option.

My son bought an MBox3 on 10/17. And we registered it. He has received no email with any special offers. Does anybody know anything about this $99 price point? Or is it just rumor?

It sounds like the $99 deal is specifically for people who paid to upgrade their Pro Tools software to version 8 after October 4th.

Actually, I'm in the same boat. I recently just bought the new MBOX 3 mini and I went to the AES convention and spoke to the AVID guys about the crossgrade and they all assured me that I would have to pay $99 to upgrade to PT9 since I bought my MBOX after October 4th. Since coming back from the AES conference I have not seen the option to purchase the upgrade for the $99 I was promised. Ive also tried contacting an AVID "Product Specialist" that I met at AES but have not received a reply to both my email and phone message. Anyone else expecting to crossgrade for $99?
