NIce work, Roy! Beautiful song. The part which really struck me was that you performed with such restraint. Not a wasted moment, anywhere.

Hello guys,

I collected some tunes that I’ve composed on the last few years and put some of them on a little secret page. Feel free to check it out HERE
BP, I enjoyed your song too… I could never play this… Those Jazz chords are too complicated for me…

Thanks in advance

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Damn, Roy! You know the one thing that really sticks out to me in all of your recordings is the incredible phrasing and impeccable control in your guitar playing. That kind of playing just transports me blissfully into alternate existences and the paradisical recesses of my interstellar consciousness, man. I wanna be you when I hear you play. And I’m particularly impressed with the way you’re able to switch seamlessly between slide and touch. I’ve heard very few players employ that so effectively. In fact, only Trevor Rabin comes to mind but he didn’t really do it that much. Guitar prowess aside, OM&M is a beautiful track.

Rogerio -- I’m glad you enjoyed Monkey. I’ve got another raucous rocker you can link to below. It’s funny you should mention liking the “80’s” snare sound because I actually rerecorded all the snare and tom tracks with different sounds. I think it sounds much better now.
I would totally be into trying some internet collab. I’ve been doing everything completely on my own so long it’d be nice to stretch into something different. Just let me know what you’re thinking about. In fact, if “No Name Yet/Low” is still untouched I could get into that.
Also checked out some of your secret tunes. You’ve really got some #$%& goin on, man. “Thoughtful Afternoon” is really nice and “Hip Jazz” of course is still a favorite. Do you have expanded versions of some these little tease tunes? It’d be great to hear some of that developed further.

Paul – God, I love your voice, brother! Great funky jam – love the synth stuff and that guitar player is making my crotch moist…well if I was a chick he would, I guess. Amazing you were all able to get together on this without even being in the same country!

picksail – I’m smiling broadly as I listen to “Five Bucks…” Reminds me of Steve Vai when he’s being blatantly influenced by Frank Zappa. You know, this is the kind of stuff we really need to be hearing on the radio. (Can I get a “AMEN, BROTHER TONY!”?) It’s cool and edgy AND makes you smile and bob your head…and laugh heartily at the bouncy cartoon noises. As for the fade, it could’ve gone even longer and it wouldn’t have bothered me but I’m a weirdo. Moreweirdpleasethankyou.

So here are a couple of new ones. "I'm Not Me" and "Not Forgotten." Plus the new mix of "Monkey." These are part of a full-length album I’m hoping will be finished this week. You all will of course have all access to this material.

Rogerio- great stuff. I like your video game compositions, especially the one for final fantasy. It really tells the story well with the pictures. How did you get involved with composing music for video games?

"Rogerio Lima has extensive skills..." that's for sure!
Did you do everything for these samples from beginning to end? If so, what are you mastering with?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here

Thanks for all the comments. I played an L4 thru a fender super reverb for that track. I think I need to have the amp serviced. I have a polytone which I'll use next time, which will hopefully get rid of that buzz.

Quote:

The bass is a clean fretless, dry/no verb, with a very slight chorus on it....there's also a deep cello, which comes in and out in the song. The 'tuning' thing you hear may be either that slight chorus or a slight phase issue.

Roy, I plan on listening to your piece again later tonight, but did you play everything yourself in your home studio, or was this another project.

I love the bass sound, and would love to hear more about how you achieved it.

bp,
I played a fretless (Fender) on 'Of Madness and Magic'. I ran it direct and used a touch of RenBass to enhance it a little (I usually don't care much for RenBass, but it worked for this.)... no verb (I rarely use verb on bass), and added a touch of chorus on it. There's a deep cello too that added resonance to a few places. And yep, I did all the playing on this one.

Hey Roy, just checked out 'Of Madness and Magic'.

Its really nice. Those mando samples are played so nice, it reminds me of a harpischord or something. Very easy going. Mix is exceptionally nice too(as far as I can tell on these work computer speakers). So, was this tune done on the Fender you recieved for Christmas?

~~~
I really wish I had more free time. So many of you guys are so gifted in your abilities, and It would be great to be able to have the time to compile something together with a lot of other individuals.
Gene, youve got great violin skills, im STILL mixing that song you gave me that sample for. Roy, you remember the Remedy song with some of your chops in it, Ive still got that on the back burner, im just trying to morph everything into a certain direction.
---
Anywa, good tune Roy. Very peaceful. My boss here asked if I was listening to 'pure moods or something'. Maybe thats bad for him, but I like pure moods.
Hey folks
I'm very excited because I just closed a deal to get a Buzz Audio SSA 1.1 preamp for a great price. I'm picking it up tomorrow.
Anyway, on Easter Monday I have a session booked and the lineup is cello, violin, acoustic guitar and vocals. I'm also borrowing a friend's pair of B&K 4007's for the occasion. Should sound really sweet.
I'll post some samples as soon as I can.
Hey Ben,
I used a friend's Fender fretless for 'Madness'. The 'Christmas' bass is a fretted Ibanez, and I'm getting some good stuff from it too. I'm using it on another piece.
That's good to hear about 'Remedy'...good song...let me know as it progesses.
I just got Ableton's Live and Drums on Demand installed with my Mac's ProTools LE/MBox system.
Here's an MP3 of my first few minutes using Live to construct a drum track, and using Rewire to control Live through ProTools.
Bass is direct
Guitars are through Amplitube
Drums are "Drums on Demand"
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
I have this one synthpop song I'm working on called "I Will Remember Everything" that I'd like some opinions on. I'm done tracking it and am working on mixing/self-mastering it.
The trouble I'm having is that I get drastically different levels of bass when I listen to it on different systems, and that's making it hard to know how to mix the bass track. My monitors have only 4-inch speakers, so the low-end frequency response isn't the greatest, which makes things that much more difficult.
If you guys could, download this mp3 of the song, listen to it and let me know what you think about the overall mix, but particularly the bass level. Perhaps the bass needs to be EQed a certain way? I still have a lot to learn about everything in recording, including mixing/EQing.
And for those of you who like to know such things, here's what I'm working with on this song:
Pro Tools LE 5.1 with Digi 001 on PC
KRK V4 monitors
Roland XP-80 workstation
Shure SM-58 mic
Nathan
PS - When you're done with your critiques, trash the mp3, as I don't want unfinished versions floating around anywhere. Once the final version is online, you'll all be welcome to download and share it at will.
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Autohypnosis - I a/b'd your mix with a couple of cuts off of The Police's "Ghost In the Machine" that were in mp3 format as they were the only synthy tunes like that that I had at the ready. ("Spirits In The Material World" didn't work that well since the bassline seems to doubled w/ gtr. "Darkness" worked much better.)
My synopsis is that while the overall mix was pretty good, I could've used a little more bass and slightly less vocal with maybe a touch more reverb on the vocal to open it up a little although really vocal works fine like it is.
As for specifics on the bass I'm not sure if it needs more volume or just more bottom or maybe a little of both. My advice would be to do what I've done and a/b it with one or two tunes that are similar in sound. Make sure that you listen to everything at the same volume and in the same format. Putting the songs on a CD and comparing the differences on different systems would be a good idea.
Good luck.
Oh and I really like the trippy part toward the end.
Nathan,
I think your bass level is fine, as well as the overall mix. I would like to hear more than just the XP-80 (like maybe some guitar), but it's a good song. Be sure and post it if you do a remix.
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Autohypnosis,
About I will remember everything. The bass mix level sounds okay, maybe just a tad hotter (1 to 2 dB) would work well for synthpop. As far as getting the bass to be similar across several systems, that's more a mastering thing with synth stuff...try a multiband comp on the final mix paying careful attention to the two lowest frequency bands.
The mix is okay, I think perhaps the string/pad melody at the begginning could come down and sit a little better at the beginning. By today's standards for synthpop though, it seems a little plain. I suggest listening to Stings newest album, 'Sacred Love' for some ideas about additional effects, automation, and panning ideas that could really bring the mix to life (you could have loads of fun in the 'bridge/breakdown' thing starting around 2:45). Just my impression. I also think roy's right in wanting to hear some more solo/live instruments (like guitar) placed in alongside the synthwork. I hope some of this helps you turn this into a monster piece. Thanks for posting it.
Really nice tune, bp. You've got a very straightforward, matter-of-fact style in your writing that I dig. (That I envy, in fact - I always end up writing these crazy tunes with abstract topics.) And the recording has a nice two-guys-hanging-out-on-the-porch-with-their-guitars feel (although I assume it's all you). Yeah, when I was teenager I would, in fact, hang out jammin on the porch with my best friend and my wah pedal (and sometimes all my pedals).
Nice work, badmofo.
groove- cool stuff.
autohypnosis- I like the tune but I agree with Chris's comments it's just a little plain. I realize it's a demo though.
bp- cool song. I think the vocals are a little loud in the beginning compared to guitar. Also, my cheapo speakers are getting buzz in them because the level's too hot. It might just be acoustic guitar buzz though. I think I hear a little of both. I have that problem a lot. I get a mix finished then check it on my cheapo computer speakers only to find I'm overdriving them so I have to drop all my levels.
Browsing through files I ran across this one today. This is my first official attempt at writing a punk song (I actually have another song similar to this that I wrote 15 years ago called "Rat Guts," maybe it'll pop up here sometime). The result is probably more metal than punk, though, and very clearly nods at my love for Fishbone. But I had a blast doing it and still have a lot of fun hearing it back. Check it out here>> Get Your Face Outta My Space
Hey Roy, thanks for the listen. I was too impressed with the way things turned out on that track. Not to sound egotistical, but its rare when I really like a drum track that I create, and that song happens to have one. Since I am not big on using pre-recorded drum loops, I am proud of the programming on that track, though it in itself is a loop, the mix on the drums I do like.
And the end explosion I like, when the electric guitar and synth 'tines' come in.
Thanks again for the listen.
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hey Gene, good to hear from you. Actually, all the drums I programmed(In protools of course) from my Triton. Looking at the session now, its actually two drum tracks woven together. One track is a simple kick and that 'shaker' sound Roy was talking about and then a snare rim tap, and the other track is more of the electronic drums(kick, and a snare, and that deep kick sound that hits once per measure around beat 3).
As far as reason goes, I havent used it much, but I suppose I would like to get to know it though. Im not much of a reason guy, but I havent completely ruled it out yet.
P.S. Gene, how is Emma Lily doing?
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks Ben,
I have been meaning to get a little more into the percussion side of things, you really did a nice job !
Well, Emma is exceptionally happy these days. I have been working on a Double from the Bach Sonatas and Partitas. It has been a while since I have given her any attention, and she is really responding quite well, it just the old man here who needs a little more work on it. I'm really trying hard to get this recordable just for my own experience on playing and recording. The real truth is that I talked to my teacher over the holidays, she is 93 now and she asked me if I have been practicing...well I did not lie and got a good lecture. What is it about teachers that can get you really motivated ?
Thank you for asking, Emma will be pleased that you asked !
Really nice stuff... I wish you nothing but success my friend !!!!
I have been putting together a new site, independant of the video stuff. It is in the early stages, but it is a start.
http://www.s94545301.onlinehome.us/
Take Care,
Gene
