This be me:

All these were done on my Korg D16XD.
Right now, I'm working on getting Pro Tools up and running to (hopefully) improve the production quality.

Enjoy!

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Here's one:

http://cuepop.com/details.asp?LibraryID=2486#

MBox, PTLE 7.4.2 cs2 using Hybrid, Structure (that I ported a bunch of my Akai libraries into via EXS in Logic), MOTU MX4, a bunch of samples and loops chopped all to hell, some from commercial libraries, some from libraries I've created. Mixed and mastered in the mix using primarily McDSP and RNDigital, TL Space. Used Amplitube2DUO on the guitars that were DI thru my pedal board (Boss and Dunlop gizmos).

Not all tracks in PT though.

Thanks.

Draft 2 is ok.. I'm still lost on creating the perfect mix with the vocals (it cuts at one point due to some mic problems that didn't show up till later).. opinions and harsh critiques are welcome!

BTW this isn't me... it's one of my friends who is letting me record him remotely.

I really like this. It's very Built To Spill/Radiohead; an odd combo, I know, but that's what I'm feeling. Very cool. I have almost the same setup as you, how long have you been recording for?

About a month.. this was my first real recording and mixing experience. I just finished up most of the song today and I should be posting a final version soon.

Glad you like it! I'll pass this along to him!

I finally got some of my stuff up. You should check it out, if you'd like. It's at www.myspace.com/mybandgerund

Let me know what you guys think of the "mix," as I worked hard to get the kicks and bass to sit in the "pocket."

I like this tune, dig the guitar work, cool stuff.
I found myself humming it later. Melody is what people generally remember most.

My immediate impression of the mix is that the guitars are stepping on each other.

You might want to play with the pans to give them more space.
Particularly, when there's a lead part and some chordwork going on at the same time, sounds like they're both panned center. I would push them away from each other so the solo can breath better.

Nice work!

Actually, the rhy. gtrs are as follows:
2 hard left/right- slightly dirty
2 about 30% l/r- dist.

Lead gtr is doubled, 1 at 10% R, the other Center with slight slapback delay, lower in the mix.

I'm going to work on it some more to get the spacial imaging better (crosses fingers).

Thanks!

Another thing you can try if the rhythm guitars are double tracked is flip the phase on one. This sometimes opens up space as well.

This is typically done when you record in stereo, like an acoustic guitar.
However, I've found it can sometimes have a 'space opening' effect on double tracked guitars as well.

Wango, I tried out your techniques last night...all I can say is WOW. Thanks for the advice. Everyone on this board is so helpful. I haven't posted the new version of the song, yet, but it sounds killer. I also re-mixed the drums a bit more, and upped the room mix. They sound like a Monster! haha.

Awesome! Glad to hear it and glad I could help.

A couple other things I thought you might look at are for for reverb, since
reverb can easily make a mix mushy;

1) Make sure you have a predelay on the reverb. This can clear the mix up a lot too. Every song is different of course, but without a predelay, the mix often gets congested. 50 ms is a good place to start. What I do is max the predelay, so I hear an echo effect. Then I halve it, again and again until I get it somewhere between noticing the predelay and not. That usually ends up around 50 ms :-)

2) Pan the reverb a little differently than the main track. The way I do this is to set up two sends from a track, one dry and one with reverb. If, for example I have a guitar panned 50% left, I can pan the reverb separately to say 70%. This also can open up space in a mix and make it wider.
What this does is put the main track, where you have all the bite, in a different spot than the reverb, which can take away from the bite.

No one thing will do it all, but all of these little things can add up to opening up a lot of space in the mix.

Hope they help!

This was recorded on Dec. 7th. There was a Sunday service right before and it went 1/2 hour over, so I had about 40 minutes to set everything up.

Wango, again, thank you for all of your advice. I recorded vocals for the song this weekend and I have to say, wow. I also eq'd the guitars a bit (and cut at 250) and it really made the vocals stand out. I bussed reverb on the vocal tracks and harmonies in stereo and boy, did it really create a sense of "space." I'll post it tonight so you can hear how I took your advice. Thanks again!

Jon - Cinderella Babe sounds much better. I sure hope you uploaded the latest version or else I'm losing my mind, which is not impossible, I assure you :-)

It definitely sounds more open, I like it.
Nice work!

It's a memorable progression and melody.

Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!

Here's another song utilizing Pro Tools Structure and Native Instruments Kore Player:

http://www.youlicense.com/SongDetails.aspx?ID=59500

Structure is freaking amazing !!! The more I dig into it, the more it does.

I've loaded my EXS Libraries into it, which had come from my previous Akai, EMU, EXS, etc. samplers. It's really cool to be able to do all the processing in the box as opposed to the old days of routing to physical outputs to be routed to the counsole, etc.

I tracked the guitars thru my Boss and Dunlop pedal board. I then applied Digidesign's Eleven plugin to the raw tracks using Audio Suite.

New ProTools user here, got my 003 factory on Dec. 01, so just about a month.

Finished up my first set of tunes two days ago.
These were tracks I had already, just remixed/remastered in PT.

Have to say, there's an awful lotta power in this system!

Any feedback is appreciated.

One is a cover, the rest are mine.

Enjoy!

It is indeed a major pleasure to work with Ben Grosse..but like i said , I tracked most of the audio (bar drums) in L.E , via 003 spdif through an API , so i partially qualify :-)

Thanks for the kind comments.

Hey Roy,
I just listened to your tune "In My Head"
I think it's awesome. And, it's given me renewed inspiration for a project I've been struggling with for a while.
Thanks for that.
