Here's some stuff my "band" recorded. The first one is a demo, the second is the latest real recording, the third is an old project I did with Sonar and regular sound cards, and the fourth is still in progress. The band was started as a joke, and thus my horrible drumming. I should make jokes that require my spending less money.

Re: New music

I really enjoyed your songs. The quality of the recording is very high, the vocalist is better then most in the genre. In the verses for "Cowboy" I would record an addition guitar, panned far in one of the channels, because it sounds a little empty. "Dreamer , Inc" has a lot of cool riffs in it, it's kind of like "R'n'B gone Emo". Only suggestion for that song is I think the snare could use a little more pop. "Craig's House" reminded me of a down-tempo Kasabian song...there isn't much else to say about it. "Keep Your Friends Close" sounds quieter then the other tracks, crank it up and I think it could be the best song in the lot...would be fun to hear live.

Still working this one. Should have a bass line to it tonight. Some cutting still to do, but I dig it so far. Jack Johnson like in a way. Added the electric guitar parts. Will add one more section.

Guitar was API pre - 1176 and APEX 435's.
Electric was - SM-57 - Fender Prosonic and Bogner cab
Vocal chain was APEX 460 - 1272 - 1176 as well as a SM-7B - X73i - Distressor

Good times...

Bass line will help it out some I think.

Thanks! I agree with all the things you brought up. I did everything I could think of to help the Verses of that Cowboy song, but I think the performance of the riff just wasn't confident enough to make it jump out. The guys were kinda inexperienced in the studio, so some riffs had a little trouble because I wouldn't let them crank their gain to 11 to compensate for things sounding weak. That part, believe it or not, is actually 2 rhythm guitars, 2 leads (all doubles of each other), and the 2nd part of the 1st verse has a real Rhodes piano behind it. Oh well. After they recorded it, i brushed it off as good enough. Then while mixing wanted to kick my own ass, because it definately sounds empty, even with all that going on.

ANd that Dreamers song, the drums are actually a rough bounce I did right after I finished editing, before we even moved to guitars. I didnt have time to mix that song, so that's 110% rough mix, expecially the drums. I made the drum bounce just to save track space to move on. Im fighting the urge to go backwards and remix things, haha...it's just bad news, i know it. I'll be there for hours!

Thanks again for listening.

Re: New music

Hey there everyone ... long time no post! It is summertime, and I am running up and down the east coast like a madman, but back in town long enough to work on this 4 song project for a local folk band. I had posted the preliminary instrumental tracks a little while ago, and here are the preliminary final mixes with vocals and some faux mastering going on.

"Summertime"
"Wait a Minute"
"Andrea Gale"
"Angel From Montgomery"

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to listen and give me your criticism. The guitars were recorded using a single SM81 into a Great River MP-2NV, the mandolin was an AKG C414-XLS into an API 3124. Female vocal was a TLM-103 into the API, and the male vocals were the 414s into the API. I tried to keep the recording simple to fit the style of the music and their approach to the project.

Stan,
Hey buddy. Sounds great! Guitars are nice and bright. Interesting songs for sure. Very bluegrass. Hope that you can get back down sometime to hang out.

Vocals are nice and up front. clean!

Way cool... BTW the API showed up and is racked up. AWESOME! Hate ya for bringing your over, but awesome!

Re: New music

Thanks for the kind words, Chris. The more I have listened to "Summertime" and "Wait a Minute" I think I need to bring his lead vocal up a bit (just a db or so). I also have come to think that I probably need to tweak the low mids and the bottom some -- it sounds like the recording is on the verge of being boomy on some small speaker systems. Also, there is a bass guitar in "Andrea Gale" and "Angel From Montgomery", and it has seemed nearly nonexistant on some of my tests.

Once I am in the area long enough to shake the dust from my shoes, I'd love to get back down to your place and hang again -- or maybe have you trek up to the foothills of Frederick and hang out here at CrossFire. I had a lot of fun last time, although I did leave out of there with a serious case of equipment envy. I saw your invitation to come down when you had some other DUCers in town, but I was on my way back to North Carolina by then.

I am glad that you took the plunge with the API. If I had my way, I think I would have 12-16 input channels of API for the studio and call it a day. I just love what that thing does for a microphone.

I have finally been able to go back and listen to what you have been posting, and per your usual, everything is sounding so nice. It is great to hear what a good, high quality recording you are getting with those Apex mics. I dare say that everyone is taking note of what you are cranking out of TBR. Of course, the effort you put into tuning your recording environment, the time you have invested in training your ears, and having a couple racks full of awesome gear helps a bit, right??

Added as an afterthought: Every time I listen to "Andrea Gale" I crack up at the line "the hull must be filling with swordfish ... her man's take will surely be good" because when he was performing it I swear I thought he said "her mansteak will surely be good". MMMMmmmmm -- mansteak!

Stan: sounds good man! I honestly prefer the instrumental versions from way back opposed to the ones with vox (just caus I dig instrumentals actually ) but sounds like you did them up good man! good to hear from you again man

surely: the guitar sound on that one its self is pretty good, but I might suggest bringing it up a tad in the mix so to speak. the playing is good to go with the sound also. good job!

Inteldoc,
Guitar and vocals sound great...the bass should add a lot...everything right now sounds dead dry and present...fine for the intro, but it needs to open up when it kicks in...fine to keep everything dry as is, but I would give it something else with some distance(good verb) to it. The 'heavy' guitar eventually coming in helps, but sounds a little thin if it's supposed to bring in a fullness to the overall mix. Something else with some distance to it would do wonders, I think.

Just throwing those thoughts out...I know it's early in your mix. Post back...Great job so far.

Roy,
Totally agree with you. Trying to taylor it with him some. Not sure what it needs. Unfortunantly he keeps asking me to play stuff and I am rusty to say the least. I think that the strummy strummy stuff gets to me after awhile. Tried to make the electric parts just simple to bring something to the song.

Thanks, I will keep updating it.

Also, I have little to no eq on the guitars at all. Will tweek with that soon.

Re: New music

Doc: you might try a slightly distorted rhythm electric guitar behind the acoustic on there, and then put in another over-driven tube type lead sort of following the vox at certain points which might sound cool. Give the artist Gavin Degraw a listen and you'll have your answers man.

Hi guys,

A little female input here
I've just started my new website, SuperPuss. The site is just in it's early days at present but there's downloads of most of my music there and the first new SuperPuss song has just been uploaded.
All the tracks have been either tracked, mixed or mastered (some, all three) by me on my 001 using ProTools. All new SuperPuss material is done completely on my 001.

Some of you will recognise some of my songs and my old username 'Doc'

Cool though! Still trying to see how you get these tones out of Guitar Rig. Or are you mic'n now?

Thanks Roy,

yeah, the new album is almost done and it's all rather textrual like this one, pretty dark and cinematic stuff. As for the end, well, it IS from The Shining soundtrack. I recenty saw it again on HBO and when that Ballroom scene occured, the music playing in the background just called out to me, I had to use it for something, it has an eerie beauty about it.

Since the song isn't technically generating any sort of income, I'm not worried about clearing the sample just yet. You're actually the first one to have guessed it correctly. I'm getting numerous emails everyday asking me what that music is, Cole Porter, The Ink Spots, etc.? Nice job on nailing it!

Hey Titania,

Some good songs you got there,

Do you sing or play any instruments?

The mixes are nice too and clear. Good job with the EQ on those.

Do you mod over at bb.com? I'm sure theres a mod there by the same name Nice pics BTW, you're looking huge! I've got a long way to go to catch up but give me some time and I'll be sporting some nice 15" arms

Here's a real rough mix on a short 2 minute song "July" I did last week. I did it using an old 1962 Harmony Rocket straight into PT. In 1962 this guitar sold for 100 bucks. Actually I need to put some heavy strings on it and try it through my Twin.

All,
This is again another version of the song I have been working on for my latest (old) client. Had JSTUNNER add a bassline from afar. Gotta love the Internet. He played a good line for us and sent it up my way. Thanks bud.... I ended up taking it and shooting it back out to the X73i and reamped it in a way and EQ'd it to get a lower tone. Then had the 1176 on it too in order to fatten her up some. Worked well I think....

Took a lot of the vocal extras out and just ran a straight APEX 460 on him. Crushed the hell out of it with RVox and added some slight 2 tap delay (canot really hear it only on parts.) And added some layered verbs.

The guitars were all API with the 435's. 1176 on them, and then the plugin too in the mix to get them levelled some. (BigbubbaJ infiltrated the system and took a session out of bordom and gave me that idea. thanks dude!) Also gated the toms out so they were not so ringy.

The master chain I tried something slightly different than my norm. Ran the mix out to my Trident 80B to eq slightly, bt then sent it out to my 1176's and pumped the compression that way. Took time to tweek and sound not so pumpy, but I got it alright. Then L2'd it and added PowR dither and wha la... I think that it is pretty much done now....

BEAUTIFUL - Rothman

Enjoy....

Doin' ok. going through last years concerts and experimenting, trying to improve my technique. I have a wide variety jazz, band, chamber and choral. Trying to get ready for next year when the school season starts.

Actually just finished re-working a choral concert from 2004 that I wanted to specifically come back to because of the amount of room noise that it had. I took about 2 weeks to really work on it, and I am personally pleased with the new version. A major Thanks to Chris Cavell for taking the time to just talk about technique to this old man

Chris...
Nice job on engineering what you have to work with there in this song...definitely better now...jstunner's bass added a bunch...
The production itself is still missing some things in the instrumentation in places (I say this knowing you're only engineering this, and the client is 'producing' himself.).....Even when the elec. guitar comes in(which is nice), it could use something else, IMO... a B3 would add some great color to it. When the elec. guitar drops out again, the 'missing' elements are even more apparent.
To me, it's too busy overall...acoustic guit, vocals, drums, and the tempo even rushes in places.
Of course, if you and I were producing it, it would be a masterpiece, right?... ...great job on engineering, as usual.

Man, I will say it was a challenge to play on the track, for all the reasons you had mentioned Roy, but thanks for the compliment on the bass line. I actually like the song, it's kind of catchy.

Fred,

Nice concept there in July. I used to also have a 62 Rocket. She was a feedback beast, hell to keep in anything remotely resembling tuned, and a right biatch to try and play well. It had just such a cool mellow tone though...

I traded it to a buddy about 6 years ago (right after I refinished it all black) for his tele...haven't seen it since.

Given that I've got first hand experience with such an axe...I'd say you've done a marvelous job.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: Latest Stuff...

Doc: took that track home and listened to it on proper monitors last night and it is sounding great man, but I agree with Roy that it needs a little something more. There are points where it is perfect, but others that sound busy as he described. I really dig the part where it comes in with the sped up rim shots on the percussion though and drops back into the main part. IMO I would suggest taking it down to half time after that and building back up into it from there which would sound kinda interesting. It is the clients track though, but just thought I'd add that man. good work on the engineering and what not though man! peace

Jstunner: btw.. excellent bass line to groove with the track man!

Thanks Chris. That was the first thing I tried with the Rocket. I'm going to put heavier strings on and see what I get. Yes, It's a pain to keep in tune, but really nice pick ups. Usually I play my 76 Strat or 69 Les Paul, or acustic. But the Rocket is fun to mess around with.

Doc,

Took this tune a listen, i think overall its pretty rockin'. The whole mix, in my opinion, is just a tiny tiny bit to compressed(and thats coming from me, Opto 10:1 on the vocals guy )
it may be just the drums, as the vocals sound really strong throughout the whole mix.

Good job on it! Sounds good
