Tell me sometime how to get a decent snare sound
Jon, I guess I can talk you through the snare drum tuning process. Do you record live drums? Why not just have me do the drums for you. Just send me a stereo mix. Even better mono on R Click on L, and I will record 8 tracks of drums for you. I can then send the PTLE files via FTP. Doug |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
for those of you looking to do drums also guys, I would highly reccomend last years issue of Tape Op that had the article about tuning drums in it. Like Doug mentioned, it is sort of an art...

The first song is an original that my band recorded. Let me know what you think and if you have any advice. The second song is the Prelude from the Bach suite Prelude Fugue and Allegro. It was played by my brother Kevin Green. Once again, let me know what you think and if you have any advice. Thanks |

I have a snare I picked up in a second had shop that I randomly beat on sometimes. Inteldoc had a 'dude' on his kick, but this thing is so beaten up it looks like a football crowd helicopter shot. I don't know if it would even be possible to tune it lol. If you're really serious I'll email you. There are a couple of things I have that I could never make the drums work for. Thanks |

Thanks
Hit me with an email. I am going to Disney World this week with the family, but I will work with the material when I get home on 7/3. I am always looking for some interesting collaboration. Your music is just a little "out there" and will allow me some nice freedom. If the track you send was recorded to a click, please indicate the tempo. Otherwise, I will map it out or just "wing it." Doug |

Second one: man, you're brother is a very good guitarist there! one thing I might suggest for the recording aspect is that the acoustic sounds just a little bit boomy. You might want to try pulling the mic back about 6in. to 2ft. just as a starting point and move it around a little to find what is called a guitars "sweet spot". A lot of times I will mic off axis pointing towards the bridge of a guitar with one condenser, and pointing towards where the neck meets the body of an acoustic with a second condenser which makes an awesome pair and captures most of the performance very well. Sometimes I will also mic over the guitarists ear right by their ear caus as a guitarist we sometimes put our ear where the sound is best on our instrument... over all both are cool tracks. good work! |
Re: Mac Mixes!!!!!!!!
Greetings everyone! Got 3 hip hop songs that I've recorded with a few of my friends here. Please offer me your opinions, tips and criticisms. I'm hoping to continually improve my mixing abilities. Thanks!

I like your music. I think the intro is a little long on Dont Walk Away. I think there should be some "big" melodic guitar from the very beginning. Maybe some kind of melodic guitar "hook" you can bring back later. I have 3 comments for the recording quality: 1. The vocals seem a little soft and maybe "dull." 2. The lead guitar needs to be "bigger" and "in your face." It sounds mono and dry. 3. The snare drum is thin and the cymbals are a little soft. Maybe some of the local pros can suggest HOW to fix these things. Good band. This is not really my genre, but I like the music. PEace, Doug |

KORDOVA-
Thanks for the kind words! Honestly we recorded those about a year ago, and whatever we did then has pretty much become locked somehwere in my brain where I can't reach the memory. But we're recording again in the next few weeks, so as we do stuff I'll trty and keep you informed! Thanks! -jrm |

http://evenlight.com/downloads/songs/ram/theweight.ram Here's a couple of samples of my new record. I mixed and mastered it in Pro-Tools LE 6.7 I usually work with SSL's but the studio wasn't available so I made a "virtual board" out of a Millenia STT-1 and an 1176, and ran my sounds through those 2 pieces of gear and back into LE and continued from there. The drums were tracked on an SSL G series with a Radar and the rest was in PT LE, with the same Millenia and UA 6176 through an Apoggee AD-800 into a Digi 002. |

Hi FSM, Listened to 'Don't Walk Away'...I love the intro guitar sound...I do agree with Doug that the intro is too long...could be cut in half. And though I love that intro guitar sound, it should not continue into the chorus. It would be far more effective in just the intro and the verses. The chorus guitars should be as good, but different, IMO. This gives the original guitar the chance to kick ass each time it re-enters the song. Very impressive overall though...thanks for the listen. -Roy |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks for the reviews Doug and Roy...
I love hearing outside opinions as you don't hear things that could make your songs better while inside the box. I will take in consideration your comments and mess with the songs some more... once again, thank you.. Allen |

Hello everyone. I've been away for a while. Is there a good block of posts that is dense with new music?

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Hi all.
Been a while, lots happening here I see. A friend of mine recorded a song of his on his harddiskrecorder. We mixed it with PTLE 6.4, sending all his channels into my 001's S/PDIF in one go. The guy composed the song, played the bass, drums and did the singing. Had someone else doing the guitars for him. We EQ-ed the tracks using the equalizers from his Roland VS 880 harddiskrecorder. No compression, no mastering. Straight mix. I saw you He has some difficulties with the language, to find the right words. He's dutch and still a young lad. Please look through that, I find his voice very professional for this hardcore-style song. He doubled the vocals in two takes. I'm proud of the mix, we decided to go for more stuff together so we'll see what the future will bring. Thanks for listening, going to check out all the new stuff here. Cheers, Walther Voideco |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
voideco: sounds cool, I dig the vibe on that track. I am waiting to listen to it on better speakers when I get back to the studio to really post much about it otherwise.

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
Thanks Superpenguin. Yeah I like this vibe too. There are some issues with the mix though, all in all....
Tnx, Walther. |

Greg and Doug:
Sorry, haven't visited the forum in a few days. I'll try to download the new version(s) and give'em a listen tonight. Greg: It's hard to say what exactly since it's been a few days since I've listened to your track. If I remember correctly it just sounded like -everything- was getting squished. Without seeing your session or knowing more about what tracks you compressed, what compressor plugin, and what settings you are using. |
Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
SSR -
I went back to the session for the song Steak Dinner Date and took a look at the master fader. I had the Voxengo Analog Flux plugin and the T-Racks Limiter plugin both on the fader. I think that *might be* where the over-compression was coming from..... I took them both off and the song still sounded good. I must have been a little ear-fatigued while I was messing around with the final mix. I have not re uploaded the song as of yet, but I get your point about the squashing. None of the tracks themselves had compression on them except for the vocals, which have the UAD-1 LA2A as an insert on the track. Actually, between the Analog Flux and T-Racks plugins, I think the T-racks limiter is the main offender. Thanks for your input, though. This forum is the only communication I have with other musicians. GregJ |

Re: Let\'s hear your latest stuff....right here
All,
This is a band that I have been desperately trying to finish up. 14 and 15 year old. I posted a few tunes a few months back with them. Same guys. They did a 6 song demo, and for 14 and 15 year old, they did a great job. S.A. - Can't You Tell This is one more out of the way. Ran it back out to the Neve's at bounce as sort of an experiment. I liked the overall sound. Here was an older one S.A. - Gratitude - Doc |

Beautiful song...great production style and mix.....excellent job. -Roy |
Re: More technofolk.
Here is one more that I finshed up tonight. 2 left....
S.A. - Lesson Learned Again, 14 and 15 year olds..... I tried my best... - Doc |
Re: More technofolk.
Hi IntelDoc,
i really like the guitar sounds your getting especially on the steel-string acoustics. At the time i bought my Apex 435 i couldnt find any in the country so i basically bought one from musiciansbuy based on your recommendation and the results you posted. Im am liking the mic but am not having much luck experimenting with placement. If possible, the next session you do with multimple 435's would you be able to take a quick photo of the setup so i can get a few pointers. Thanks. Cheers, Ruben |

Finne,
Agreed with the vocals. I will probably bring that down with Mastering. Otherwise I cannot spend much more time with it. Already too much into it. Thanks for listening though. - Doc |

Other than that, nice work on the S.A. stuff. I heard most of it before I think, but not the new Control one I think. I am adding it to the playlist at the moment. |
Re: Overnightlows
Charlie,
Ya for some reason you cannot download it. It has been on and off all weekend. Server on their side I think? At least it still plays. Now if I can just figure out how to get ranked in the system for that thing? Not sure on the My SPace stuff. Too new to it all. The S.A. stuff is decent for 14 and 15 year olds. I have just spent too much time on it. They are paying a lot so I want to give them credit and service fit, but it has gotten crazy. SEE POST: WHEN IS "WHEN" - Doc |

Re: Overnightlows
Doc: cool man, will try to give it a listen and check back later on the site. I am not quite sure how to rank on there caus I have never done a MySpace thing. Seems like MySpace is sorta like the old school mp3.com deal though in a way.
as for S.A. yeah man, gotta give the clients that pay the most good attention. isn't their demo supposed to come out in July here? They remind me of a band that I did a show with down in Ohio that was comprised of 14/15 yr. olds. We played an All Ages club down there on the road one time and these kids were all over the stage and tearing it up. I was like man... they're only 14!! lol |

Great, thanks a lot Doc.
I will use your setup to start with and then go from there and experiment. I also realised last night that ive got the inbuilt HPF on the 435 switched on and it already made a big difference when i turned it off. Thanks again. Cheers, Ruben |
New music
I should've posted this in here originally, but I didn't even think about it. Here are links to a few songs I just finished:
1)Madelyn - Dreamers, Inc. 2)Madelyn - Cowboy 3)Madelyn - Craig's House 4)Madelyn - Keep Your Friends Close The post I was using to talk to people about them is here:"Drum roll, please...." sorry for double posting like that! |
Re: New music
Hey IntelDoc, it looks as if you are using the Blue Kiwi cables? Do you like them?
