New PT Prefs helper

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Avid and this software was not created, tested, or officially recommended by Avid or any of its agents.

This and other free Pro Tools related utilities are now available at:

http://petegates.com

PT Prefs is a utility program for Mac OSX which can delete / backup / restore various preference and support files - Pro Tools preference trashing in other words! It doesn't delete any essential system files, they are all just settings which at worst can be manually re-entered. Sometimes Pro Tools benefits from having these files cleared out (after a crash/blackout etc) - Pro Tools remakes them with default settings when it is run next. Therefore if you are unsure which options to check it is safe to check them all, in fact if you are running this software due to a problem rather than as a matter of course I would recommend trashing all preferences, it's more likely to solve the problem.

It's freeware, anyone is welcome to use it - but, and I cannot emphasise this enough at their own risk. It is not extensively tested on multiple OSX versions. Always have your system backed up. I will endeavour to fix the software if any problems arise though this software is provided free and not under any explicit or implied contract of service or warranty so treat it as such.

Any problems/queries/suggestions, keep them to this thread.

Pete

That's great, thanks!
Didn't need it for 11, yet. Let's see what happens down the road. But it's great to have it.

Congrats!!

I have been developing Trasher for Windows since PT 8. These projects are fun though can get quite time consuming!!!
Here is a link to one of the threads for it to see its capabilities.

Thanks,
I had a look (I'm PC at home) and your's does loads more than mine so I won't be doing a PC version! I just made mine do what I needed it for. If it can, with not too much modification, be used by other people that's cool too. I used to program part time professionally a while back (totally on PC funnily enough, no Mac experience), trying to wake up that side of my brain again.

Thanks Peter for this as I've been asking about something like this for PT11 and was told it wasn't needed but I'm not sure about that. Was told in this thread: http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?p...70#post2055770
that all one would need to do would be to re-install PT11 which I don't think is the way to go.

Question: after unzipping the download all I have to do is drag the unzipped file to the Applications folder?

Too soon to tell! It was easy to add so I have for now. Though I'm going to modify it next week, at the moment it deletes ALL Pro Tools versions preferences which was never a problem before as you couldn't have more than one version of Pro Tools installed concurrently but with 10.3.6 and 11 this has changed so I'm going to make it that you can delete pre-11 and 11-onwards prefs separately.

You can run it from any folder that has execute permission (you will generally need to run it from an Admin account as it's delving into system folders), most people would put it in Applications or Applications/Utilities I guess. I always keep it in the Applications/Avid folder so I can find it quickly!
