Widening the Stereo Image?

I've got a couple of questions for the technical wise: How does widening the stereo image effect the overall LOUDNESS of a stereo track?? How wide should one go? Is there an industry standard? thanks

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I wouldn't recommend widening your stereo image by more that 18". You will lose about 1.7 to 2db, but I believe that's the industry standard.
