Jorge,

Hey, thanks for listening. It's funny you mentioned that about the snare being over compressed in the "When Memories Die" song. You're like the 5th person to say that to me, and yet, the snare is hardly compressed at all. The kid that played the drums on that track doesn't hit rim shots, so there's not that nice crack to the snare, I think that's a big part of it. Being a drummer myself, I'm always interested in bettering the drums sounds, so your comments are definately appreciated. And that vocal thing you mentioned about them being loud, I totally agree, and I'm so not a big fan of those overly loud upfront vocals, but everyone seems to be liking them lately, so I had to do them. Oh well. Gotta make people happy. Thanks again for listening.

Da Basstard: That's a rockin' song you have there. I'd love to know what you were using to record those vocals with (besides good talent of course They had a very nice full sound that I can't seem to ever figure out. I didn't really notice the tom thing all that much either that was mentioned above, but I think I am hearing the same thing Kamurah was talking about with the edit thing. Could just be an mp3 mess up though, but every now and then I'm hearing a tiny click kinda sound. Other than that though, I think it sounds great.

Mike

it might be that the attack is set too fast?
try a slow attack/fast release combo if you haven´t already.....
even if the attack is not all there (read weak drummer), you can sorta create it this way. What compressor are you using?

thanks guys... been working on that for a few weeks.

the vocals were tracked through my akg c3000b > focusrite voicemaster > 001. the male part is tripled (panned left, right & center) during the verses. then those tracks are sent to an aux with bombfactory LA-2A set to max compression (100% gain reduction) and nothing on the 3 vocal tracks. the 4 tracks together end up fat and smooth. they were recorded in my bathroom. i took every blanket i had and hung them over the shower curtain and towel racks to dampen the room. worked out ok...

during the verses, i put some chorus on one backup vocal and panned it left. on the other backup i put a harmonizer and panned it right.

the bass was tracked through my sansamp RBI into the 001. the guitars went through my POD.

kamurah, you're totally right about S1 and the drum edits. unfortunately, when we were in the studio recording the loops, we didn't record any construction hits. next time.... i'll try to mask those edits using midi drums. a good crash will cover just about anything!

i'll work some eq on the drums too. keep it coming!

peace out.....

Da Basstard... I'm hearing it as I write and I have to say I'm impressed, very nice.

How is it you say you triple the lead vocal without phasing...?

record 3 separate tracks for the same part in 3 passes. since each one is unique, there are no timing issues for phasing to come into play....

Brian,
That is a work of art. Your best yet in my opinion. Way to go. I could listen to that kind of music all night long.

Don't know how you guys feel about Mac users posting in here... haha. It's all about the music anyway, right?

My Digi001 gets used mainly to record jam sessions. My friends love listening back to what we do and bug me until I give them new CDs. Since June I've done about 25 of these jams (2.3gigs of MP3s). It's all improvised/first take stuff with me struggling on the drums (I feel I'm a better recording guy than drummer). This stuff forces me to get better at both hobbies, though.

It's a great time to live when I can afford to own such a high quality hardware/software combo as a college student.

Hi Folks,

Thought I'd join in and post my bands website, www.thebandbrown.com, on which there are the 4 mp3s from our EP. We're based in Dublin, Ireland and have just started gigging. We recorded all songs in my house using a Digi001 (using TC Gold channel as pre-amp and AD/DA) and various outboard gear.

Music is sort of pop, but with a bit of a rock egde. Been likened to David Gray / Coldplay / Radiohead (more when we play live).

Thanks for listening. You'll need fast connects unfortunately.
