View Full Version : Poll - When do you think XP will arrive?

Phil O'Keefe

I'd say let's get a "pool" going, but I don't think Digidesign would appreciate it. images/icons/smile.gif

But there's no reason we can't have a "pool" without the monetary input and / or prizes, right?

BTW, Beta testers, you're excused - you might have data the rest of us don't, and besides, that would probably violate the NDA if you said anything. So please don't.

So, what's your guess?

I don't think they'll make the "sometime in May" date, in spite of their best efforts. Something unforseen always comes up with these sorts of things. But I don't think it will be July either. So I'm going to guess Friday, June 21st, which is my daughter's birthday.

They only made the BETA test announcement on
March 21st so it hasn't even been two months yet.
I'd say probably

Monday, May 20th

or May 31st, 1 second before midnight. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Well, SoundForge 6 is out today, with
32 bit/64-bit float/192kHz file support — !
Comes with xtras including Vegas Video 3.0 LE, the streamlined version of the digital video and audio editing system; 18 DirectX Audio Plug-Ins; Acoustic Mirror and Batch Converter.
If you've been waiting to grab a copy of SF it looks like this is a good time. I think they just might be Win and XP compatible. images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Ok not to throw a monkey wrench in this but what plugins are going to work?
And my guess is they said may in order to beta test they had to have somthing so the later the release the less bugs I hope. I wonder if there is something untapped in this box we have. 24 bit 96 khz?
I got all my parts just sitting to see which way its going to go bought two opperating systems
So I could put this puppy together tomarrow but i am working on an Electrick harp Strangly enough ok my guess well it wont be my birthday . that was the eighth May 31. Lets Give them the benifit of the Doubt.

I have no idea. I DO know that when I had XP running before, pretty much all of my DX plug ins worked just fine.

And my guess is they said may in order to beta test they had to have somthing so the later the release the less bugs I hope. I wonder if there is something untapped in this box we have. 24 bit 96 khz?

Nope, sorry. That would most definitely require a hardware upgrade. Not gonna happen with just software. You'd need different converters in the box. ADAT lightpipe supports a maximum of 8 channels at 24 bit / 48 KHz. You CAN get 96 KHz over it, but it drops down to only four channels (splitting the 96 KHz data of a single channel over two lightpipe "channels"). On a Thousand dollar product, I'd GUESS (and that's all it is - a gusss) that Digi would do a "follow on" product if they had this in mind. They MIGHT offer a upgrade / trade in deal (similar to what they do with the Digi 001 to TDM upgrade / trade in deal) but I wouldn't hold my breath on that - can you upgrade a Session 8 to a Digi 001? I dunno - maybe you can...

Beyond it being Windows XP Home compatable (and possibly working in XP Pro - but definitely unsupported) it's all conjecture at this point. Things that CAN be done with software that I'd like to see...

Directconnect
ASIO drivers (not likely)
32 tracks (not holding my breath)
More third party plug in and soft synth support
etc. etc. etc.

We'll just have to see what they have when it is finally released.

I got all my parts just sitting to see which way its going to go bought two opperating systems

I'm with you - I'm not going to scream and yell until it's released. They said hopefully sometime in May. Well, I can cut them about 30 days of slack on that, because things come up and I'd rather see it a month late than released buggy and unfunctional. But all bets are off come July 1st. images/icons/smile.gif I seriously think it will be here well before that though. But until it is, no one outside of Digi and the beta testers knows what it's going to include... we can wish all we want, but statements about "I'd like this" or "it better have that" are not going to change what it DOES have (or doesn't have) this late in the development. And there's no sense getting into a frenzy until we see what it does / doesn't have.

All I can say is it BETTER have 32 tracks! images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/wink.gif images/icons/grin.gif

However, When you start tracking 24/96 everything changes. I like recording 16 tracks together a lot. It takes huge disk space. Audio becomes less reliable. 1 night of recording takes about 50-60 gb space. Then copying that to CDs is very time consuming.

So, I have done it once. Will I do it again?
do NOT think so considering the sound improvement AFTER bouncing to 16/44.1 is NOT audible to me. From now on, I stick to 24/44 until DVD audio becomes the standard and I have 1 terrabyte hard drive so it can hold at least 10 nights of recording. I would also need 40X DVD burners that can hold the full potential DVDs(17GB of Audio). At least I can burn 1 night of 24/96 16 tracks recording onto 3 DVDs. ONLY and ONLy then I will consider it.

beau<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">You can't really do this with a Digi 001. There's things like the old Rane Paqrat that "split" the signal into halfs, and sent half to each channel of an ADAT machine. Newer stuff like the Tascam and Mackie HDR's do something similar when working in 96 KHz. The track counts drop in half.

This debate has been going on for a very long time now, way before XP was even released. It used to be a debate on win 2000 support but that never came. By the time we get XP support, the next operating system will probably have been released by microsoft. Gee Digi, why don't you talk to microsoft and find out what their next operating system is so you can get a head start and maybe keep abreast of progress!
The message here is that Digi doesn't give a rats rump about the pc platform........to their own misfortune in the end!

yes it will be during digiworld I predict. But at that time it will be the first version. Then the problems will come out and then the updates after that. People will want to try the new but not lose the old. Not all plugins will transfer right away. So I predict alot of XP/win98 DUAL BOOTING going on in the future.

From the Horses Mouth Yesterday........

The drivers and software for the TDM systems will be out in 2 weeks time for XP ( personally if i could afford a nice TDM i think id proberbly stech that little further and get a mac too)
The other XP drivers will follow sometime after that but without them saying too much more about that i got the idea that it aint gonna be for a few months at least.
