Wow,
It's been a few months since I started one of these threads, so time to give it a go. Look here to see what was gracign people's ears in past months:

http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=32;t=004695

http://duc.digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=32;t=005247

Again, feel free to list whatever you'd like, but my main interest in in hearing about new stuff coming out. Along those lines I'll list a few that are high on my playlist right now:

Angelique Kidjo - 'Black Ivory Soul' - a wonderful CD full of African (Benin) and South American sounds.

Bill Bruford's Earthworks - 'The Sound of Surprise' - truly one of the best jazz-fusion CDs I've enjoyed in years. We all know Bill...

Allan Holdsworth - 'Flat Tire' - Extra special because it's recorded and produced by our own English Jim. Not your typical Allen Holdsworth CD, but hey, what is?

Keb' Mo' - 'Just Like You' - Just such an upbeat blues talent.

Transatlantic - 'SMPTE' - Still can't put this away after about 4 months of listening.

Cheers,
Mark

Don't apologize. I completely agree, with the exception of Galway CD, but, hey, you're a flute player, right?! images/icons/wink.gif Even a flute player get to have favorites. I used to play in a progressive rock band with TWO flute players. That was fun! images/icons/wink.gif

Mark,
I have got to check out the Bill Bruford CD. His work with 'Yes' is classic. Also, cool about English Jim... I want to hear his work with Allan Holdsworth, as much as you rave about the guy... images/icons/wink.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">s'funny cuz I almost mentioned that one. I had bought it when it was first released (2 years ago), had it stolen, then just last week picked up a new copy, as all the K&D catalog is on sale at Virgin, including the Tosca and Peace Orchestra CDs.

The production on these K&D albums is by far the best in the genre, IMO.

Tosca's 'Suzuki in Dub' is rather impressive as well.

I also have Zero 7 'simple things' on heavy rotation, David Holmes 'let's get killed' and Amon Tobin's 'supermodifier'.

I'm in an off-Radiohead month. So ... here goes. images/icons/smile.gif

picked up a lot of great old jazz stuff from BMG... signed up my wife...(hint hint...i'm single) (oh shoot...blew my cover)

Herbie Hancock ...Empyrean Isles
Miles Davis - Live at the Fillmore East, 1970
John Coltrane - Ascension...(crazy free-jazz)

the new Medeski Martin and Wood album is good stuff.

Wilco. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. sounds to me like they have been listening to Kid A a little too much...it rocks! and a lot of it was Pro Tools tinkering...Amen Digidesign.

I JUST picked up one of the new Tom Waits discs, Alice. Really moody, dark, Carnie music. I like.

And....I got into some old Cure stuff (Pornography, The Head on the Door)...just cause I haven't listened to it in quite awhile.

Well...i've taken up so much space here. thanks for reading!

How is the new Pedro the Lion disc? I tried to pick it up the other day, but Eide's in Pittsburgh didn't have it.

Later!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">They started out as one-half of the defunct alt-country group Uncle Tupelo. They were (and still are) rootsy in style. But Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is alt-country, indie pop, and Kid A all thrown into one. It isn't a record that grabs you instantly, but it digs itself into your brain over time. Great record.

DarkShade,
Check out two songs form Revolver - 'Tomorrow Never Knows' and 'She Said, She Said'. From Magical Mystery Tour, try the Harrison tune 'Blue Jay Way'. Go back a bit and check out 'We Can Work It Out' or 'Day Tripper'. I could go on a while with lots more, but I think that the first 3 are not what most people think of when they think Beatles, which is why I like them so much.

I actually listened to A Hard Day's Night yesterday on headphones. It all sounds so strange, really. Their writing is very cool, but all the songs are so very short and concise. That made them sound pretty out of place after just finishing a Transatlantic CD. Very different spaces after 40 years.

Ridger, we have similar tastes in music, going back to my days in the 70's as a cross-country trucker listening to those bands, Graham Parsons, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Flying Burrito Brothers (still my favorite version of 6 Days on the Road along with the Taj Mahal rendition). Poco's Forgotten Trail compilation is a nice box set of their early work. Jim Messina is a Pro Tools user, and produced and played with both Buffalo Springfield and Poco: http://www.jimmessina.com/poco.htm
He was the engineer on a couple of the Buffalo Springfield albums:
http://www.jimmessina.com/buffalo.htm
I don't know if you've ever heard of these, but they are a couple of my somewhat obscure favorites:

McKendree Spring
Goose Creek Symphony

If you like the kind of country rock that you thought no radio stations play anymore, check out www.kpig.com (http://www.kpig.com)

KPIG evolved from the legendary station KFAT that used to be in Gilroy, CA and played alternative country, Grateful Dead, acoustic, blues, honky tonk and other stuff that never gets anywhere near any of the rock or country stations now. Unless you are near Monterey or Santa Cruz, the only way to listen to it is on the internet, but they have good hi-band streaming.

I have 3 of their old vinyl albums and found a couple of CD reissues before they disappeared, much like another of my relative unknown favorites, Jimmie Spheeris (http://www.jimmiespheeris.com/)

I have to get the new Neil Young...love Booker T and have had the great honor of playing with both of them at different times. (they're Bay Area locals, Neil a couple miles down the road from me in the Santa Cruz mountains, and Booker's in Marin)

Speaking of Neil Young and KPIG, last night I heard "Like a Hurricane" from his Unplugged album on the Pig, and that antique pump organ that he plays on it is just amazingly eerie. Another album I need to get.
