This is so random. Happened to a session that was last open in October 2016 and a few other sessions as well...but I can open some that were created in 2013 and 2014. I've kept up with updates accordingly. Using 12.7.1.
I've trashed prefs, reinstalled Pro Tools, tried to import session data and tried to open the multiple backup files in the session. All files are .ptx. I've never seen this before. Figures it would happen on a Saturday.
UPDATE:
Found the session on Crash Plan (the lifesaver) and it worked. The session has lived on my backup drive which I just purchased last month. It's a raid 1 mirrored USB Nextstar enclosure with two four TB SATA drives. Could the drive/enclosure be corrupting the files?
