How do i automate instruments?

It doesn't seem to be as simple as automating audio track changes as i'm following the same steps:

1) Set track to Write
2) Play
3) Make adjustments
4) Set track to Read and listen back...

but nothing is 'writing' on an instrument track.

I basically want to automate pitch bend adjustments from my midi keyboard onto the instrument track. I can hear the pitch bending but it just won't write these adjustments.

I've tried it in Record mode too but obviously this just overwrites all my pre written midi note parts.

Set the track into record mode and activate MIDI merge in the transport window.

Thanks! Do i need to select 'AUTO' on the instrument itself or is Pitch Bend values from a midi keyboard separate to the instruments own parameters?

As Clausiii indicated, by setting MIDI input to "merge" you're essentially telling PT to keep the MIDI notes on the track intact and merge any new MIDI input without overwriting. Pitch or modulation wheel output will be written as CC (Continuous Controller; CC1 I think) data instead of midi notes and can be written to the same instrument or MIDI track as is the MIDI notes in MIDI merge mode.
