I've got Pro Tools M-Powered 8.01 on an Intel Macbook 2.0 ghz running OS 10.5.8 with 4 gb of ram, using Transit as an audio interface. I've had smooth sailing until a couple of weeks ago, when from out of nowhere, PT boots up but won't open up/create sessions. The last thing that I see is the 'save to' prompt and then PT freezes and won't force quit. I've tried:

trashing the preferences
trashing the databases on local and external drives
removing all plug ins
reinstalling PT 8.0 and 8.01
reinstalling OS 10.5.8 combo updater

I suspected a corrupted T-Racks installation at first, but I have the same PT issue with or without TR in the plug ins folder. However, since the first bootup after the complete PT 8.0-8.01 reinstall I did get this message:

VPA compatibility error

Anyone else have this happen? Any insight would be appreciated.

Have you tried opening a session with all the plug-ins deactivated? (hold the shift-key and open sesion)

Yes, tried that too. Same result.

Sorry the only other thing I can find around the internet regarding that error points to reinstalling the T-Racks plug-in.

Thanks for your help. The problem turned out to be an out-of-date Transit driver. Once I updated the driver, it's all good now.
