Hi all,
I recently purchased a macbook pro 13'' (2009) and a M Audio profire 2626, and from first use I have had nothing but problems with cpu overloads from as little as 3 audio tracks running with 1 (compatible) RTAS.I seriously need help!! ive checked obvious things like hardware buffer, disabling bluetooth etc but nothing seems to be working.I used to run a beat up pc with a delta 1010lt and it worked far better than my setup now!!

HELP!!!!!

Macbook pro (OS X 10.6.2)
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 1067 DDR3
1TB FW External HD (Oxford 934 chipset)
M Audio profire 2626
PTMP 8.0.3

How do you have your rig connected up? The external disk, 2626, everything.
Additionally (since I can't keep up with what modifications are made to what year of MBP);
Does your model have an express slot or SD slot?
How many FW ports does that model have?

2626 chained to the 400 port on my FWHD then my 800 port from FWHD to the 800 port on my macbook pro

It has an SD slot with 1 FW800 SLOT

Thanx

That's is what I believe is causing your cpu to overload. There's a number of threads on this subject.

The HD is connect as a FW800 device and the 2626 as a FW400 device.

As an experiment (and I don't condone running this way....) remove the FW800 HD and try and put together a small session on your internal system drive, you'll probably find that it works OK, BUT don't run your rig in this fashion, it's only to verify that this is indeed the problem.

Going foward; Your HD will have to have a FW400 port, connect that port through a FW400 to FW800 converter cable into FW800 port of your MBP (in essence stepping it down to FW400). Connect your 2626 to the HD. This is how I have me iMac connected as it too only has one FW800 port.

I tried recording direct to my internal HD before and had the same cpu problems, which is why I had to get an external (didnt know you had to use external)

Here's a thread that might help out;

Yes recording to your internal drive is not recommended at all, I only suggest it as an experiment, but do not run your rig normally this way.

So far, I have found out that third party plug ins were causing me CPU errors. Since I updated to 8.0.3 and removed the plugs, I started having less errors.

I only have one 400 port on my FWHD so that would mean i would have to connect my 2626 in the 800 port?

FWHD specs:

800 x2
400 x1
usb
eSATA

Wait, I didn't notice that in your signature that you have an Oxford 934 bridge set drive enclosure. That may mean that you are connected in an acceptable way. (Digi/Avid has a number of configurations for that model of MBP).

I have an Oxford 911 bridged drive, hence the cable conversion. I've only ever used the 9/6 pin conversion method and never had problems with it. What kind (brand/model) of HD are you using?

Maybe you are right in looking at plug-ins as the issue.

Maybe plugins could be the issue,but... its doin the same for the digidesign creative collection plugins?

I ran a ton of plugs (including the creative collection) on both my old core duo 2 machine (2009) and the first core duo 2 iMac, but had a lot of -6101 errors at first (to the point where I couldn't run anything, that's what prompted me to try the conversion cable route). You could try it, but you would need 2 conversion cables, one from the Mac to the HD and one from the HD to the 2626. I would hate for you to waste you money and have that not work though.

Plug-ins could definitely be an issue - did you see the specific info in the General Troubleshooting thread regarding plug-ins, including the reply that goes into more detail?

FireWire may also be contributing to the problem - you should not have any FW800 connections in the chain. You should try using a FW800-FW400 cable to the 2626, then out from the 2626 FW400 to the FW400 port on the 2626. If that doesn't work I'm afraid that, most likely, you'll need to get a drive with 2 FW400 ports on it and chain it between the computer and the 2626.

You can get FW800-FW400 cables at Monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10301&cs_id=1030104&p_id=3541&seq=1&format=2) for $4.50 each.

What if I chained this way:

Macbook pro
FW800/FW400 cable to 2626 (400 port)
then
2626 (400 port) to (400 port) on HD?

I would try it - I've used my 2626 that way before and it worked fine.

Worth a try, just be aware that if you shut down the 2626 before the write buffers have cleared in your host you risk losing or corrupting session data, make sure that PT is shutdown and perhaps your MAC before shutting off your 2626.
