I just got a Samsung 243T that's a 24" wide screen LCD. It has the same TFT display as the Apple 23" Cinema display. IT'S FREAKING HUGE. Running it DVI @ 1920x1200 dpi. Openned PT, OMG talk about visual realestate! I can see nearly EVERY track and almost the entire song with out zooming around.

yep, i know what you mean. after you go huge, there's no way you can work on a regular machine. i'm running 3 19" lcd's at 1280x1024, so thats 3840x1024 total! working on a single screen is crazy now.

Why choose it over the apple display?

I am having trouble with my same monitor...

I bought it a couple months ago and cannot run games or any other animations like screen savers on the monitor at that resolution. at lower rez'z it works fine but when run at the recomended rez it begins to flicker and get noise. I also bought a new ATI video card at the same time as the monitor...rated way beyond that of the monitor.

do you notice this?

if not, what video card do you have?

thanks,

analog for now,

justin

I would love to hear some more information about the 24" Samsung LCD monitor and video cards needed to drive them. I am considering going this way, and I'm sure a lot of others are also. The title of the thread might even be changed to "New 24" LCD minitor" to give us all a place to discuss these big new cheaper LCDs.

I have looked for reviews, but there are not a lot out there. A PC Mag review said that the "blacks" are very dark and better on the Samsung, while the Sony doesn't do black as well and they are closer to a dark grey. But I have not heard anybody else echo those comments. Most reviews say the Apple 23" Cinema display looks best, but color adjustments are lacking on the PC version. The sony has an "advertized" response time or 16ms, but I have found none to claim that it has lead to reduced ghosting. But at $400 less than the others, it might be the best deal, provided there is no real problem with the "blacks."

For the time being, I'm sticking with my dual 17" lcd, which is still nice... it just that 2" lcd frames in the middle that bugs me...

I got this one cause the price is a little less and it's a 24" rather than the 23". I saw one 2 months ago on the Icon at Alto Music and it looked killer. As I said before, it's the same TFT display thats in the Apple monitors.

I am using an ATI 9000 Pro card, when I set it to 1920x1200 DVI after about a half hour it goes blank, but if I use it at 1600x1200 it's fine. The video card is about 2 years old now so maybe it just doesn't support it. I would make sure you have the latest ATI drivers and the monitor.

I went digging around my old research and found this tasty little link from Samsung:

Notes:

The maximum digital resolution for all the monitors listed above is 1280 x 1024, except for the SyncMaster 210T.

The maximum resolution of the 210T and the nVIDIA DVI card is 1600 x 1200.

Because of the bandwidth requirement, there may be an occasional pixel dropout.

The SyncMaster 240T and 210T will not work with the 3D Labs DVI output.

The SyncMaster 170T and ATI Radeon cards must use a DVI - I cable.

CHECK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS (http://erms.samsungusa.com/customer/sea/jsp/faqs/faqs_view.jsp?PG_ID=1&AT_ID=6066&PROD_SUB_ID=28&PROD_ID=133)

They dont tell you this on the box when you buy it.

its DVI's dirty little secret.

minus 1"

Yeah, so? Would you rather have a 20" monitor or 19"? And it was much cheaper.

Where did you read the Apple 23" and Samsung 24" use the same TFT display?

It's all over the place. Apples uses Samsung panels in all the LCD displays. Also found out a few days ago that the panels are manufactured by LG for both companies.
